Multiform-based Yi Jin Jing exercise against osteoarthritis of the knee: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic osteoarticular disease characterized by degenerative lesions of articular cartilage, with clinical manifestations of knee pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. Patients with KOA often experience lower limb muscle strength decline and weakened joint stability due to pain, further exacerbating functional disabilities. Yijinjing, a traditional Chinese fitness qigong, features stretching and gentle movements, emphasizing the coordination of limb movements and breathing. This study innovatively combined traditional Yijinjing with Baduanjin and W

Traditional Chinese Medicine for the Treatment of Geriatric Heart Disease: A Review.

Geriatric heart disease is a common disease in modern society. Due to the characteristics of advanced age and multiple underlying diseases, elderly patients with heart disease have a variety of types and treatment methods compared to other diseases. We searched the databases of CNKI, PubMed, and Web of Science to search for the causes and treatment methods of traditional Chinese and Western medicine for heart diseases using the terms "geriatric heart disease", "treatment", "ischemic heart disease", "pulmonary heart disease", "hypertensive heart disease", "rheumatic heart disease", "thyroid hea

Multimodal compared to pharmacologic treatments for chronic tension-type headache in adolescents.

Chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) in children and adolescents is a serious medical condition, with considerable morbidity and few effective, evidence-based treatments. We performed a chart review of 83 adolescents (age range = 13-18 years; 67 girls and 16 boys) diagnosed with CTTH. Two treatment protocols were compared: multimodal (osteopathic manipulative treatments, mindfulness, and qi gong) and pharmacologic (amitriptyline or gabapentin). Four outcomes (headache frequency, pain intensity, general health, and health interference) were assessed at three time points (baseline, 3 months, and

The role of complementary medicine in the holistic, patient-centered recovery from anorexia nervosa - a narrative review.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) can be a severe psychiatric disorder associated with one of the highest mortality rates among mental health conditions. AN treatment demands a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. However, conventional therapies often fall short in addressing the full biopsychosocial complexity of the illness. This narrative review explores the emerging role of complementary medicine (CM) in the management of AN, emphasizing its scientific rationale, clinical applications, and relevance within integrative care models. By synthesizing findings from current literature, the review exam

The Effectiveness of Nonpharmacological Interventions in the Management of Chemotherapy Physical Side Effects: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in cancer treatment, chemotherapy side effects significantly impact patients both physically and emotionally. While pharmacological treatments can mitigate these side effects, they may trigger additional side effects, exacerbating the overall discomfort experienced by patients; moreover, psychological factors influencing physical symptoms are beyond the reach of pharmacological interventions. Nonpharmacological interventions, however, offer the potential for complementary or alternative solutions. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to offer a comprehensive analysis

Role of Mind-Body Fitness in Obesity.

Various mind-body fitness modalities such as Pilates, yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong have become an accepted part of the physical activity, exercise, and leisure sector, serving several populations eligible for meditative movement activities. However, no robust evidence is present in the current literature supporting the efficacy of these meditative movement activities on health, fitness, and well-being markers among obese adults. Interestingly, the feasibility and safety of mind-body fitness programs in this cohort are still questionable. However, the limited available data show the beneficial rol

Susceptibility of Women to Cardiovascular Disease and the Prevention Potential of Mind-Body Intervention by Changes in Neural Circuits and Cardiovascular Physiology.

Women have been reported to be more vulnerable to the development, prognosis and mortality of cardiovascular diseases, yet the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and strategies to overcome them are still relatively undeveloped. Studies show that women's brains are more sensitive to factors affecting mental health such as depression and stress than men's brains. In women, poor mental health increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, and conversely, cardiovascular disease increases the incidence of mental illness such as depression. In connection with mental health and cardiovascular

Mind-Body Interventions for People With Cancer: Evidence, Innovation, and Implementation.

Many people with cancer (PWC) continue to experience persistent biopsychosocial and existential challenges across the cancer care continuum. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, cancer-related fatigue and pain, sleep disturbance, fear of cancer recurrence, cognitive impairment, and reduced quality of life remain highly prevalent during and after treatment, underscoring the need for interventions that address both psychological and physiological dimensions of distress. Mind-body interventions encompass a diverse group of practices that explicitly target the bidirectional relationship between m

Baduanjin Exercise Prevents post-Myocardial Infarction Left Ventricular Remodeling (BE-PREMIER trial): Design and Rationale of a Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) remodeling following myocardial infarction (MI) is an established prognostic factor for adverse cardiovascular events and the leading cause of heart failure. Empirical observations have suggested that Baduanjin exercise, an important component of traditional Chinese Qigong, may exert potential benefits on cardiopulmonary function. However, the impact of a Baduanjin exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation program for patients recovering from a recent MI has yet to be assessed. The aim of this trial is to evaluate the potential role of Baduanjin exercise in preven

The efficacy of Kiko exercises on the prevention of migraine headaches: a pilot study.

Migraine headaches, a common chronic medical problem, require prophylactic treatment when they are frequent and severe. This is the first study to investigate the efficacy of Kiko, a Japanese practice of Qigong that uses repetitive coordinated breathing and movement as a prophylactic treatment of migraine headaches. This pilot study, a single arm, non-randomized 4-month trial, investigated whether 3 months of Kiko training would reduce the severity and/or frequency of migraine and/or MIDAS scores. The baseline migraine data were collected from participants in the first month and then participa

Cultures in psychiatric nosology: the CCMD-2-R and international classification of mental disorders.

This essay reviews the Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders, Second Edition, Revised (CCMD-2-R, 1995), by assuming the theoretical stance that symptom recognition, disease construction, and taxonomic strategy in psychiatry reflect, and are constrained by, the cultural norms and values as well as the political and economic organizations of the society in which they are embedded. The CCMD-2-R is an ethnomedical classification grounded in both symptomatology and etiology, in which Chinese psychiatrists seek to conform with international classifications on the one hand, and to sustain a noso
