Stigma exsertion is an important agricultural trait that facilitates the application of heterosis in crop breeding. Although several quantitative trait loci associated with stigma exsertion have been fine-mapped or cloned, the underlying genetic basis, particularly in legumes, remains unclear. In this study, we identified and characterized the exserted stigma mutant stigma exsertion1 (sge1) in the model legume Medicago truncatula The exserted stigma phenotype of sge1 is mainly caused by physical interaction between floral organs, in which normal petal and stamen elongation are inhibited due to

Dissection of the genetic basis of wheat ionome is crucial for understanding the physiological and biochemical processes underlying mineral accumulation in seeds, as well as for efficient crop breeding. Most of the elements essential for plants are metals stored in seeds as chelate complexes with phytic acid or sulfur-containing compounds. We assume that the involvement of phosphorus and sulfur in metal chelation is the reason for strong phenotypic correlations within ionome. Adjustment of element concentrations for the effect of variation in phosphorus and sulfur seed content resulted in dras

Identification of the molecular basis of the beta-thalassaemias and sickle cell disease (SCD) has made it clear that patients with the same beta-globin genotypes can have very variable patterns of clinical expression. Extensive biochemical and pathophysiological studies over the last 50 years have derived two major modifiers--innate ability to produce fetal haemoglobin and co-inheritance of alpha-thalassaemia, subsequently validated by family and population studies. However, these two modifiers do not explain the full clinical spectrum. Genetic studies have been successful in identifying modif

Renal stone disease (nephrolithiasis) affects 5% of adults and is often associated with hypercalciuria. Hypercalciuric nephrolithiasis is a familial disorder in more than 35% of patients, and may occur as a monogenic disorder, or as a polygenic trait involving 3 to 5 susceptibility loci in man and rat, respectively. Studies of monogenic forms of hypercalciuric nephrolithiasis in man, for example, Bartter syndrome, Dent's disease, autosomal dominant hypocalcemic hypercalciuria (ADHH), hypercalciuric nephrolithiasis with hypophosphatemia, and familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria have help

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Atherosclerosis is a complex trait with both environmental and genetic aspects. Although some progress has been made in defining genes associated with atherosclerosis in humans, animal models have been useful in learning about pathways and genes involved in atherogenesis. This review describes an unbiased genetic mapping method called quantitative trait locus mapping and progress in using this method to identify genes that alter atherosclerosis susceptibility in mice.
RECENT FINDINGS: Approximately 10 well defined genetic loci have been described that are associated with le

BACKGROUND: Iron is an essential micronutrient for both plant growth and human health and iron deficiency affects over 30% of the global population. Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), an iron-rich legume, serves as a strategic dietary iron source to combat global iron deficiency anemia. Despite its nutritional significance, the genetic basis of iron accumulation in legumes remains unexplored. RESULTS: This study addresses this gap by performing the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) targeting seed iron content in a diverse panel of 320 adzuki accessions (220 cultivated, 100 wild/semi-wild)

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the major food crops in China, and high-temperature stress has become one of the key abiotic stressors threatening stable rice production and food security. Rice is most sensitive to high temperatures at the heading stage. Heat stress can lead to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, damage to cell membranes, and a reduction in seed-setting rate, thereby seriously affecting rice yields and quality. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with heat tolerance during the panicle emergence stage of rice and to gain deeper insights into the gene

The diversification of epigenetic regulation, including chromatin accessibility, is crucial for adaptation to diverse environments. Chromatin regulation in endocrine organs, such as the pituitary gland, plays a critical role in controlling various physiological processes underlying life-history traits, including growth, metabolism and reproduction. To understand the genetic architecture responsible for epigenomic divergence, we investigated chromatin accessibility in the pituitary gland using a parapatric pair of marine and stream ecotypes of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatu

Solanum verrucosum Schlechtendal (2x = 2n = 24) is unique among the clade 4 Solanum Sect Petota species. In addition to being one of the only fully self-compatible diploid potato species, S. verrucosum is the only clade 4 species that lacks prezygotic interspecific reproductive barriers. This allows S. verrucosum to accept pollen from a broad range of Solanum species and thereby serving as a genetic "bridge" between the cultivated or primary potato gene pool and distantly related wild relatives in the tertiary gene pool. The genetic mechanisms underlying self-compatibility in Solanum often und

Natural gene variants of metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 7 (Grm7), coding for mGluR7, affect individuals' alcohol-drinking preference. Psychopharmacological investigations have suggested that mGluR7 is also involved in responses to cocaine, morphine, and nicotine exposures. We review the pleiotropic effects of Grm7 and the principle of recombinant quantitative trait locus introgression (RQI), which led to the discovery of the first mammalian quantitative gene accounting for alcohol-drinking preference. Grm7/GRM7 can play important roles in mammalian ontogenesis, brain development, and

Auanema freiburgense is a nematode with males, females, and selfing hermaphrodites. When XO males mate with XX females, they typically produce a low proportion of XO offspring because they eliminate nullo-X spermatids. This process ensures that most sperm carry an X chromosome, increasing the likelihood of X chromosome transmission compared to random segregation. This occurs because of an unequal distribution of essential cellular organelles during sperm formation, likely dependent on the X chromosome. Some sperm components are selectively segregated into the X chromosome's daughter cell, whil

Most ectotherms obey the temperature-size rule, meaning they grow larger in a colder environment. This raises the question of how the interplay between genes and temperature affects the body size of ectotherms. Despite the growing body of literature on the physiological life-history and molecular genetic mechanism underlying the temperature-size rule, the overall genetic architecture orchestrating this complex phenotype is not yet fully understood. One approach to identify genetic regulators of complex phenotypes is quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping. Here, we explore the genetic architect

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is one of the most common micronutrient disorders in cereal plants, greatly impairing crop productivity and nutritional quality. Identifying the genes associated with Zn deficiency tolerance is the basis for understanding the genetic mechanism conferring tolerance. In this study, the K22×BY815 and DAN340×K22 recombination inbred line (RIL) populations, which were derived from Zn-inefficient and Zn-efficient inbred lines, were utilized to detect the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with Zn deficiency tolerance and to further identify candidate genes within these lo

The Stiff Stalk heterotic pool is a foundation of US maize seed parent germplasm and has been heavily utilized by both public and private maize breeders since its inception in the 1930s. Flowering time and plant height are critical characteristics for both inbred parents and their test crossed hybrid progeny. To study these traits, a 6-parent multiparent advanced generation intercross population was developed including maize inbred lines B73, B84, PHB47 (B37 type), LH145 (B14 type), PHJ40 (novel early Stiff Stalk), and NKH8431 (B73/B14 type). A set of 779 doubled haploid lines were evaluated f

BACKGROUND: The back plays a vital role in horse locomotion, where the spine functions as a spring during the stride cycle. A complex interaction between the spine and the muscles of the back contribute to locomotion soundness, gait ability, and performance of riding and racehorses. Conformation is commonly used to select horses for breeding and performance in multiple horse breeds, where the back and croup conformation plays a significant role. The conformation of back and croup plays an important role on riding ability in Icelandic horses. However, the genes behind this trait are still unkno

We consider the backward evolution of a particular type of Mendelian genetic system whose transition probabilities give place to the so-called coalgebras with genetic realization and describe the equilibrium states of such mathematical objects and therefore those of the genetic system. We exploit the relationship between the genetic coalgebras modeling the transference of the genetic inheritance and cubic stochastic matrices of type (1, 2) studying first the ergodicity of these matrices in terms of the stationary probability distributions of the bivariate Markov chains defined by their accompa

This study aims to identify pathogenic genes involved in diabetic nephropathy (DN) through multi-omics analysis of circadian rhythm disruptions to uncover targets for precision medicine. We conducted summary-data-based Mendelian Randomization (SMR) and colocalization analyses using multi-omics quantitative trait loci (QTL) data (methylation quantitative trait loci [mQTL] , expression quantitative trait loci [eQTL], protein quantitative trait loci [pQTL]) to explore genetic associations between circadian rhythm-related genes and DN. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics were s

Semi-dwarfism is a main agronomic trait in crop breeding. In this study, we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) and identified a new quantitative trait nucleotide (QTN) for rice shoot length. The peak QTN (C/T) was located in the first coding region of a group III WRKY transcription factor OsWRKY21 (LOC_Os01g60640). Interestingly, further haplotype analysis showed that C/T difference only existed in the indica group but not in the japonica group, resulting in significant differences in plant height among the different indica rice varieties. OsWRKY21 was expressed in embryo, radicle,

The aim of this study was to identify SNPs located in mitochondrial DNA that are associated with reproductive traits in beef cows. A total of 1999 Nelore females genotyped with the high-density Illumina BovineHD BeadChip (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA, USA) were used to study the association of mitochondrial DNA variants with reproductive traits using a single-step procedure. In a preliminary analysis, the present results indicate a small participation of the mitogenome in the expression of reproductive traits in beef cattle. However, possible difficulties related to the biological characterist

OBJECTIVES: There is phenotypic overlap between Brachydactyly Type D (BDD) and Brachydactyly Type E (BDE) that suggests a possible common underlying etiology. We seek to understand the genetic underpinnings of, and relationship between, these skeletal anomalies.
METHODS: The Jirel ethnic group of eastern Nepal participates in various genetic epidemiologic studies, including those in which hand-wrist radiographs have been taken to examine skeletal development. Nearly 2,130 individuals (969 males; 1,161 females) were phenotyped for BDD/BDE. Of these, 1,722 individuals (773 males; 949 females) w
