Understanding Racial Disparities in Exposure to Traffic-Related Air Pollution: Considering the Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Population Distribution.

This study investigates the effect of spatiotemporal distributions of racial groups on disparities in exposure to traffic-related air pollution by considering people's daily movement patterns. Due to human mobility, a residential neighborhood does not fully represent the true geographic context in which people experience racial segregation and unequal exposure to air pollution. Using travel-activity survey data containing individuals' activity locations and time spent at each location, this study measures segregation levels that an individual might experience during the daytime and nighttime,

Treatment versus Punishment: Understanding Racial Inequalities in Drug Policy.

CONTEXT: Many observers believe that the policy response to the opioid crisis is less punitive than the crack scare and that the reason is that victims are (stereotypically) white. METHODS: To assess this conjecture, we compile new longitudinal data on district-level drug-related deaths and (co)sponsorship of legislation on drug abuse in the House of Representatives over the past four decades. Using legislator fixed effects models, we then test how changes in drug-related death rates in legislators' districts predict changes in (co)sponsorship of treatment-oriented or punitive legislation in

Person-Environment Fit, Substance Use Attitudes, and Early Adolescent Substance Use.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent substance use is a national health concern. While the literature is clear on the prevalence of substance use during the adolescent developmental period, a dearth of literature is available on the developmental contexts, particularly the influence of school factors, in which substance use occurs. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the intermediary role of substance use attitudes on the relationship between school racial composition and alcohol and marijuana use in a sample of sixth to eighth graders. METHODS: The sample consisted of 4228 middle school students (89% White;

Bem Sex-role Inventory stereotypes for men and women varying in age and race among National Register psychologists.

554 psychologists listed in the National Register of Health Care Providers in Psychology used the Bem Sex-role Inventory to rare a "mature, healthy, socially competent" individual in one of 18 target groups (a black or race-unspecified man, woman, or adult in their late 20s, late 40s, or late 60s). Factor analysis produced factors which generated three scales--nurturant, agentic, and self-governing. The attributes "feminine" and "masculine" were treated as individual items. Old targets were viewed as less agentic than younger targets and as less self-governing than the middle-aged. Female targ

Racial Stress, Social Support, and Racial Socialization Among Rural Black Mothers: Associations With Preschoolers' Executive Functioning.

Racial stress significantly affects Black mothers and their children. To cope, mothers often use racial socialization strategies, such as preparation for bias, cultural socialization, and promotion of mistrust, to help their children manage race-related stress. Guided by the Racial Encounter Coping Appraisal and Socialization Theory, this study investigated the relations among racial stress, social support, and racial socialization among low-income, rural Black mothers and their associations with preschoolers' executive functioning. The study utilized data from 437 Black mothers and their pres

Toward an integrative CAPS approach to racial/ethnic relations.

The original CAPS formulation focused on the role of the individual's CAPS system in relation to situations, formalizing a person-situation framework. Subsequent research and theorizing on the culturally embedded CAPS system (C-CAPS) began to spell out how culture, context, and group-level processes intersect with both persons and situations. The contributions in this special section provide insights into the enormous complexity and the multiple layers through which context and persons "make each other up" in racial/ethnic relations. The challenge for personality psychologists is to examine an

Racial/Ethnic Differences in the Role of Childhood Adversities for Mental Disorders Among a Nationally Representative Sample of Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversities may play a key role in the onset of mental disorders and influence patterns by race/ethnicity. We examined the relations between childhood adversities and mental disorders by race/ethnicity in the National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement. METHODS: Using targeted maximum likelihood estimation, a rigorous and flexible estimation procedure, we estimated the relationship of each adversity with mental disorders (behavior, distress, fear, and substance use), and estimated the distribution of disorders by race/ethnicity in the absence of adversities. Target

Discrimination and symptoms of depression in pregnancy among African American and White women.

PURPOSE: Depressive symptomatology during pregnancy has been associated with negative health outcomes for both the mother and child. This study examines the potential associations between depression and depressive symptoms in poor women and African-American women and their lifelong experiences of discrimination. METHODS: Data from 2,731 African-American and White participants in the Pregnancy Outcomes and Community Health Study were analyzed. Multiple regression analyses were used to investigate relations between depressive symptoms and total discrimination, and between depressive symptoms an

Community influences on white racial attitudes: what matters and why?

Tracing the roots of racial attitudes in historical events and individual biographies has been a long-standing goal of race relations scholars. Recent years have seen a new development in racial attitude research: Local community context has entered the spotlight as a potential influence on racial views. The race composition of the locality has been the most common focus; evidence from earlier decades suggests that white Americans are more likely to hold anti-black attitudes if they live in areas where the African-American population is relatively large. However, an influential 2000 article ar

The influence of subjective social status on vulnerability to postpartum smoking among young pregnant women.

OBJECTIVES: Associations between subjective social status, a subjective measure of socioeconomic status, and predictors of risk for postpartum smoking were examined among 123 pregnant women (aged 18-24 years) who stopped smoking because of pregnancy. The goal was to identify how subjective social status might influence the risk for postpartum smoking and to elucidate targets for intervention. METHODS: We used multiple regression equations to examine the predictive relations between subjective social status and tobacco dependence, self-rated likelihood of postpartum smoking, confidence, tempta

"The red man and the white plague": rethinking race, tuberculosis, and American Indians, ca. 1890-1950.

From the time it emerged as an epidemic in the last decades of the nineteenth century until it had become their number-one health problem in the 1950s, multiple explanations for the etiology of tuberculosis (TB) among American Indians competed for prominence. None was more debated than racial susceptibility-and none held on with such tenacity. Various race-based explanations -Indians' inherent racial susceptibility, virgin soil theory, and degree of Indian blood-had great explanatory power. These explanations faded from view by the 1950s as a result of epidemiological research begun in the 193

Belonging nowhere and everywhere: multiracial identity development.

Few therapists are trained to work with multiracial individuals. Most have little knowledge of the process of identity development in this ever-increasing population. In this article, an examination of how the social construction of race impacts identity development is followed by a review of current theories regarding multiracial identity development. Interviews of clinicians illustrate how therapists understand their work with multiracial clients as well as the issues they have personally confronted. The challenges faced by therapists working with this population center on understanding how

Does scoliosis have a psychological impact and does gender make a difference?

STUDY DESIGN: A population-based case-control study, we identified adolescents with and without scoliosis in Minnesota who were 12 through 18 years of age. Matched control subjects were randomly selected from school children who did not have scoliosis or any other condition. Information on scoliosis was obtained by a self-administered questionnaire, the Adolescent Health Survey. Collected on more than 75,000 school age adolescents, with established validity and reliability, a secondary analysis of adolescents with scoliosis was performed as compared with a normative peer group. OBJECTIVE: To

Unsheltered homeless and unstably housed adults have higher levels of stress and more health risk factors than sheltered homeless adults.

In the United States, approximately 580,000 individuals were homeless on a single night in 2020. Homelessness can be categorized into three subgroups: sheltered homeless, unsheltered homeless, and unstably housed. Few studies have examined the relations between homelessness subtypes, shelter service utilization, levels of stress experienced, and health risk factors. This study aimed to empirically examine whether shelter status the previous night was related to current stress, recent utilization of shelter-based mental health services, and current health risk factors. Data were collected at mu

School-level associations between health-related fitness, school characteristics, and academic performance among U.S. youth: an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Examine school-level associations between school characteristics, health-related fitness, and academics. METHODS: This observational study included schools in the NFL PLAY60 FitnessGram® project. We used 2022-2023 school year school-level data from three sources: 1) school characteristics data from the National Center for Education Statistics website; 2) cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body mass index (BMI) data; and 3) academic data (students at or above grade-level for math and English Language Arts (ELA)) from state department of education websites. We used mixed effects lin

Arterial Properties and Ventricular-Arterial Interactions in Severe Aortic Stenosis: Impact on Prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Systemic arterial properties contribute to clinical heterogeneity and outcomes in degenerative calcific aortic stenosis (AS). Lumped parameters of afterload have previously been associated with adverse left ventricular remodeling, mortality, and poor exercise tolerance in this population, but most studies did not assess pulsatile aortic pressure-flow relations, the gold standard method for assessing arterial load. Moreover, arterial compliance is highly dependent on nonpulsatile (mean) arterial pressure, which influences prognosis in this population. METHODS: We retrospectively st

Role of Gender in Health and Disease: Methods of Reporting and Interactions with Sex and Other Factors.

Sex and gender are distinct terms that must be used correctly. Data regarding sex and gender may be collected using a 2-step method that separates biological sex and self-reported gender identity. The PhenX Toolkit, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is one tool that provides investigators with recommended standard data-collection protocols. Another tool is the Diversity Minimal Item Set questionnaire. Importantly, sex and gender interact: for example, pain has both biological aspects (sex differences in electrical, ischemic, thermal, pressure, and muscle pain sensitivity) and
