Diagnostic Approach to Traumatic Axonal Injury of the Optic Radiation in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

We describe a diffusion tensor tractography-based diagnostic approach to traumatic axonal injury of the optic radiation in a patient who showed visual field defect after mild traumatic brain injury. A 43-yr-old female patient experienced head trauma during a motor vehicle accident. After the head trauma, she noticed visual disturbance. Peripheral field defects were detected in both eyes on the Humphrey visual field test. After diffusion tensor tractography-based reconstruction of the optic radiation, We determined the fractional anisotropy and fiber number of each whole optic radiation. Four r

Risk of radiation-induced skin injury in patients undergoing SIRT: Evaluation of trigger levels for radiation protection.

INTRODUCTION: Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) is a fluoroscopically-guided interventional procedure used in the treatment of primary and secondary hepatic tumors. This study evaluated the potential risk of radiation-induced skin injury in patients undergoing both the pre-SIRT work-up and the therapeutic administration, by assessing whether international trigger levels were exceeded for cumulative air kerma (Ka,r), defined as the air kerma measured at the patient entrance reference point. If trigger levels are exceeded, future checks are activated for patients. METHODS: We retrospe

Radiation-induced Brain Injury and the Radiation Late Effects Cohort (RLEC) of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta).

In the event of a nuclear accident or attack, thousands of people could receive high doses of total-body irradiation (TBI). Although retrospective analyses of atomic bomb and nuclear disaster survivors have been conducted, the long-term outcomes on the brain and cognitive function are conflicting. Radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI) is characterized by inflammation, vascular injury, deficits in neuronal function, and white matter (WM) injury, but the molecular mechanisms by which this occurs remain unknown. Animal models are crucial for evaluating radiation effects on the brain and have prov

Transcriptional Changes in Radiation-Induced Lung Injury: A Comparative Analysis of Two Radiation Doses for Preclinical Research.

In a recent stereotactic body radiation therapy animal model, radiation pneumonitis and radiation pulmonary fibrosis were observed at around 2 and 6 weeks, respectively. However, the molecular signature of this model remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the molecular characteristics at these two stages using RNA-seq analysis. Transcriptomic profiling revealed distinct transcriptional patterns for each stage. Inflammatory response and immune cell activation were involved in both stages. Cell cycle processes and response to type II interferons were observed during the inflammation stage.

Dosimetric and radiation protection considerations based on some cases of patient skin injuries in interventional cardiology.

Recently, several cases of skin injuries have been detected in patients undergoing cardiac radiofrequency catheter ablation. These procedures were performed on a biplane X-ray system used in a large Spanish hospital for interventional cardiology procedures. Interventional procedures performed and radiation lesions produced on patients are described. The radiation lesions were mainly erythematous lesions and chronic radiodermatitis. Results of the dosimetric evaluations and an analysis of the operational aspects of radiological protection are discussed. Poor image quality could have influenced

Micronucleus frequency in peripheral lymphocytes for the differential diagnosis of radiation injuries combined with thermal burns.

An investigation was conducted to determine if any analysis of micronucleus frequency in human peripheral lymphocytes was useful to diagnostically differentiate radiation injuries in the presence of thermal burns. In the first part of the study, 27 patients with burns of various degrees were tested to determine if the peripheral lymphocytes stimulated in vitro for mitotic division would contain micronuclei--a type of chromosomal aberration inducible by many genotoxic substances. Data showed that the frequency of micronuclei did not increase with burn injury but did correlate with age. Therefor

A histological and flow cytometric study of dog brain endothelial cell injuries in delayed radiation necrosis.

The pathogenesis of delayed cerebral radiation necrosis was studied histologically and biochemically in 25 dogs with special attention to vascular endothelial cell injuries. The dogs were sacrificed 3 to 30 months after irradiation with a single dose of 15 Gy to the head. Brain specimens were appropriately fixed for light and electron microscopic studies, and capillary endothelial cells were isolated for flow cytometric study. The endothelial cells were stained with acridine orange, then the cell ratios in the reproductive phase (S + G2 + M) were investigated with flow cytometry. Thereafter, F

[Ileus following radiotherapy: importance and therapeutic aspects of surgery for late radiation injuries of the intestine].

Between 1971 and 1988 74 operations for intestinal complications following radiotherapy were performed on 67 patients at the Second Surgical Department, University of Vienna. The lesions were located in the small bowel (n = 41) and in the sigmoid colon/rectum (n = 33). 98.5% of the patients were females, the most frequent cause for irradiation being ovarian cancer. Bowel stenosis with resultant chronic or acute ileus was the most frequent indication for operation, occurring in 31 cases (76%) of the small bowel lesions and in 15 cases (46%) of the colon lesions. Percutaneous irradiation resulte

1,2-propanediol ameliorated radiation-induced intestinal injury in mice.

Radiotherapy is constricted by collateral normal tissue injury during treatment, particularly the gastrointestinal tracts, which is usually referred as radiation-induced gastrointestinal syndrome (RIGS). Currently, there is no FDA-approved agent for the prevention or treatment of RIGS. By using a mice model of RIGS, we demonstrated that 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD) prevents radiation-induced fatal intestinal injury and significantly increases mice survival following lethal doses of radiation. 1,2-PD pretreatment also enhanced the survival of Lgr5+ISCs and improved crypts regeneration after radiati

Comprehensive analysis of metabolomics and transcriptomics of radiation-induced rectal injury.

Radiation-induced rectal injury (RRI) significantly affects the quality of life in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) undergoing neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT). Non-targeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomics analysis and transcriptomic analysis were conducted to explore RRI characteristics. Hematoxylin-eosin and Masson staining confirmed radiation-induced injury in rectal tissue within the radiotherapy target region. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis identified 823 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs). Transcriptomic analysi

Role of programmed cell death in radiation-induced intestinal injury.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) is a common complication after radiotherapy for abdominal and pelvic tumors, which seriously affects the prognosis and treatment outcome of patients, and lacks effective prevention and treatment methods. The primary pathological manifestations of RIII are the death of intestinal epithelial cells, as well as the destruction of the intestinal mechanical barrier's integrity, which is closely related to various kinds of programmed cell death (PCD). In addition, radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks can trigger a variety of PCDs. Elucidating

Phytate enhances gut Parasutterella colonization to alleviate radiation injury.

Food as medicine shows promise for disease intervention or treatment. Here, we found phytate, an active ingredient of plant-based diets, exhibits properties in mitigating radiotherapy-related complications. Oral gavage of phytate restored hematogenic organ atrophy, elevated peripheral blood neutrophils and white blood cells, reduced inflammation, and improved gastrointestinal (GI) integrity in irradiated mice. Phytate intake modulated the gut microbiota, facilitating the colonization of symbiotic Parasutterella in GI tract, thus combating intestinal radiation toxicity. In vitro assays and unta

Polystyrene microplastics aggravate radiation-induced intestinal injury in mice.

Radiotherapy is a common treatment for abdominal and pelvic tumors, while the radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) is one of the major side-effects of radiotherapy, which reduces the life quality and impedes the treatment completion of cancer patients. Previous studies have demonstrated that environmental pollutant microplastics led to various kinds of injury in the gut, but its effects on RIII are still uncovered. In this study, we fed the C57BL/6J mice with distilled water or 50 μg/d polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) for 17 days and exposed the mice to total abdominal irradiation (TAI)

Ferroptosis in radiation-induced brain injury: roles and clinical implications.

Radiation-induced brain injury (RBI) presents a significant challenge for patients undergoing radiation therapy for head, neck, and intracranial tumors. This review aims to elucidate the role of ferroptosis in RBI and its therapeutic implications. Specifically, we explore how ferroptosis can enhance the sensitivity of tumor cells to radiation while also examining strategies to mitigate radiation-induced damage to normal brain tissues. By investigating the mechanisms through which radiation increases cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and initiates ferroptosis, we aim to develop targeted th
