Radiation-Induced Heart Diseases: Protective Effects of Natural Products.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) account for the majority of deaths worldwide. Radiation-induced heart diseases (RIHD) is one of the side effects following exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). Exposure could be from various forms such as diagnostic imaging, radiotherapy for cancer treatment, as well as nuclear disasters and nuclear accidents. RIHD is mostly observed after radiotherapy for thoracic malignancies, especially left breast cancer. RIHD may affect the supply of blood to heart muscles, leading to an increase in the risk of heart attacks to irradiated persons. Due to its dose-limiting co

Hydrogen protects rats from dermatitis caused by local radiation.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy produced unwanted side effect on normal tissues, such as radiodermatitis. Hydrogen was previously shown capable of radiation protective in both animals and cell cultures. The effect of hydrogen was now to be investigated on radiation-induced cutaneous. OBJECTIVE: Development of dermatitis is a frequent side effect of radiotherapy of patients with head-and-neck cancer. Here we analyzed the radioprotective efficacy of hydrogen under conditions of local, single-dose or fractionated radiation treatment, and its possible molecular mechanisms. METHODS: Rats received e

Protective effects of hominis placenta hydrolysates on radiation enteropathy in mice.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the hominis placenta hydrolysates (HPhs) have a protective effect against radiation-induced enteropathies. HPh (1-10 mg kg⁻¹, i.p.) was treated to C57BL/6 mice, once daily for 5 days. Mice were irradiated (10 Gy) 1 h after the last injection. Cell damage was investigated at 24 and 72 h by haematoxylin-eosin staining, and the apoptotic index was determined at 24 h by deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labelling staining. The results showed that the HPh alleviated radiation-induced damage of crypts and suppressed apoptosis dose de

Testicular exposure to ionizing radiation and sperm epigenetic alterations as possible mechanisms of hereditary effects: perspectives from the viewpoint of radiation protection.

PURPOSE: Since the genotoxicity of ionizing radiation was demonstrated in the 1920s, its hereditary effects have remained a serious concern for human society. The International Commission on Radiological Protection has highlighted the need for appropriate protection against hereditary effects of radiation in humans. In this paper, we review the literature on the possible multigenerational and transgenerational effects following testicular exposure to radiation, focusing on sperm epigenetic alterations as possible mechanisms. RESULTS: This mini-review highlights that hereditary effects followi

The use of radiation protective surgical gloves reduces hand radiation exposure without increasing operator radiation dose during fluoroscopically guided interventions.

OBJECTIVE: Although it is contraindicated for physicians performing fluoroscopically guided interventions (FGIs) to position their hand directly in the beam, it can be unavoidable and results in greater operator exposure and risk. Clinical guidelines recommend against the use of radiation-protective gloves (PGs) during FGIs given the concern for higher radiation accumulation related to increased procedure scatter fraction (PSF). We describe hand radiation dose and procedural scatter during FGIs with regular surgical gloves (RGs) compared to lead-free PGs. METHODS: Our primary end point was to

Radiation protection for people in proximity to portable computed tomography scanners in intensive care units.

The use of portable computed tomography (PCT) in intensive care units (ICU) allows critically ill patients to undergo brain computed tomography examinations without the need for invasive intrahospital transportations. The aim of this study was to determine the radiation doses around a PCT unit to establish routines for radiation protection. Scattered radiation was measured around a Siemens Somatom On.site PCT system during scans of anthropomorphic and computed tomography dose index (CTDI) phantoms. The ambient dose equivalents in the ICU were estimated by summing the dose contributions from al

Radiation protection management in patients with stomas undergoing somatostatin receptor therapy with [177Lu]Lu-oxodotreotide.

BACKGROUND: Somatostatin receptor therapy (SSRT) with [177Lu]Lu-oxodotreotide is an established treatment for metastatic neuroendocrine tumours. However, radiation protection guidelines for patients with stomas remain insufficiently addressed, particularly regarding the handling and disposal of contaminated stoma pouches. METHODS: In this prospective study, three patients with established stomas underwent their first cycle of [177Lu]Lu-oxodotreotide therapy. Ex-vivo surface area activity and ambient dose equivalent rates of collected stoma pouches were measured over 168 h post-administration.

A Huaxian Formula Nanoformulation Confers Protection Against Acute Radiation-Induced Lung Injury by Targeting Ferroptosis.

Acute radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) remains a major dose-limiting complication of thoracic radiotherapy with limited therapeutic options. Here, we develop an inhalable nanoformulation of the traditional Chinese medicine Huaxian Formula (NHXF) with favorable physicochemical stability and enhanced pulmonary delivery properties. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that NHXF attenuates radiation-induced alveolar epithelial injury, accompanied by reductions in oxidative stress and apoptosis. NHXF also suppresses secondary inflammatory responses, as evidenced by decreased pro-inflammator

A novel radiation protection method for miniaturized MIMO mobile terminal antenna design based on metamaterials.

In this article, we propose an innovative approach to reduce radiation dose absorption inside human head tissues by shrinking the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) terminal geometric area. Initially, we employ COMSOL software to design a MIMO mobile terminal antenna that meets 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G communication requirements. Through adding the decoupling unit, its geometric area reduces from 58 × 120 mm² to 44 × 80 mm², and its simulations and measurements indicate that the miniaturized MIMO mobile terminal antenna exhibits good radiation performance. Subsequently, we construct a head model

Does a Novel Lead-Free Radiation Shield Improve Surgeon Protection Compared with Lead Apron Alone?

Introduction: The RADPAD is a novel lead-free shield that can be positioned directly in the surgical field to block scatter radiation. The primary objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness and added protection of the RADPAD compared with conventional lead during simulated percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Methods: To simulate a PCNL, a radiographical phantom patient and a mannequin surgeon were utilized. Using a real-time dosimeter, radiation doses were measured in µSv at seven surgeon locations: head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, forearm, and leg. Two shielding strategies we

A recombination chamber-based measurement system for radiation protection in neutron medical and research centers.

Recombination chambers, which operate based on ion recombination in gas and exhibit LET-dependent response, have been successfully used for many years in radiation protection to assess radiation quality (Q) and relative biological effectiveness (RBE). The REM-type chambers are a family of high-pressure, tissue-equivalent detectors designed for such applications. REM-2 and its successors, REM-3, represent successive generations of these chambers, with improvements in construction, electrode materials, gas filling, signal acquisition and mechanical design. The potential application of these dete

Simulated Galactic Cosmic Rays effects on fungal materials: towards biotechnological radiation protection for space habitats.

PURPOSE: Human space exploration is on an upward trajectory with new space stations being manufactured for scientific experiments, industrial development, and space tourism. These spacecraft in LEO and MEO will take advantage of Earth's magnetic field for radiation protection. Astronauts on the International Space Station receive an average radiation dose of 25 µSV/hour; around 250 times greater than the average sea level dose rate. Solar activity can create an increased level of radiation that requires astronauts to stay sheltered while the solar storm hits. The Lunar Gateway, another space s

Nrf2-ARE pathway activation underpins hinokitiol's protection against radiation-induced hematological, hepatic, and inflammatory injury.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation (IR) disrupts redox balance and causes tissue injury through reactive oxygen species. Although the Nrf2-ARE pathway governs antioxidant defense, effective radioprotective activators remain limited. Hinokitiol, a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory tropolone, has not been previously evaluated in vivo for Nrf2-mediated radioprotection. METHODS: Forty male albino rats were divided into four groups: control, irradiated (8 Gy, fractionated), hinokitiol-only, and hinokitiol-pretreated + irradiated (Hinokitiol (10 mg/kg/day), by oral gavage). All parameters were

Radiation Protection Considerations for Cancer Patients with End-stage Renal Disease Receiving 131 I Treatment.

Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is commonly treated first with a partial or complete thyroidectomy, followed by radioiodine (RAI) ablative therapy to eliminate remaining cancer cells. In such treatments, physical decay and urinary excretion are the primary means of 131 I. As such, patients with impaired urinary ability clearance, such as patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) whose urinary ability is impaired by dysfunction, can retain abnormally high activities of RAI, posing a concern to both the patient and those with whom the patient interacts. Additionally, ESRD patients are com

Evaluation of a suspended radiation protection system to reduce operator exposure in cardiology interventional procedures.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate a novel suspended radiation shield (ZG), in reducing operator radiation exposure during cardiology interventions. BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure to the operator remains an occupational health hazard in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. METHODS: An anthropomorphic mannequin simulating an operator was placed near a phantom, simulating a patient. To measure the operator dose reduction, thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) were inserted into the head and into the eye bulbs of the mannequin, while electronic dosimeters were positioned on the temple and at the level

Radiation protection perspective to recurrent medical imaging: what is known and what more is needed?

This review summarises the current knowledge about recurrent radiological imaging and associated cumulative doses to patients. The recent conservative estimates are for around 0.9 million patients globally who cumulate radiation doses above 100 mSv, where evidence exists for cancer risk elevation. Around one in five is estimated to be under the age of 50. Recurrent imaging is used for managing various health conditions and chronic diseases such as malignancies, trauma, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular diseases, Crohn's disease, urolithiasis, cystic pulmonary disease. Increased oxidative protection by high active vitamin E content and partial radiation crosslinking of UHMWPE.

Vitamin E stabilization successfully improved long-term oxidation resistance of wear-resistant ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used for joint implants. Stabilization can be achieved by blending an antioxidant into the UHMWPE resin powder before consolidation and irradiation. Balancing the wear resistance and vitamin E content in the blend is the current challenge with this approach, because vitamin E hinders crosslinking of UHMWPE during irradiation, which decreases wear resistance. The vitamin E concentration in the blend is generally limited to less than 0.3 wt%. Wear- and

Wellington Playgrounds Uncovered: An Examination of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation and Shade Protection in New Zealand.

Providing effective shade in summer recreation spaces can reduce children's risk of skin cancer. This study explored the quantity and protective quality of shade in Wellington, New Zealand playgrounds. Two researchers visited 50 randomly selected playgrounds during peak ultraviolet radiation (UVR) hours in summer and recorded the mean shade cover of playground equipment, seats, tables and open areas. A solar meter was used to calculate the proportion of UVR blocked by each built structure and tree. The results found that 95% of playground equipment and 64% of sitting and eating areas had no sh

TWO NEW SINGLE-EXPOSURE, MULTI-DETECTOR NEUTRON SPECTROMETERS FOR RADIATION PROTECTION APPLICATIONS IN WORKPLACE MONITORING.

This communication describes two new instruments, based on multiple active thermal neutron detectors arranged within a single moderator, that permit to unfold the neutron spectrum (from thermal to hundreds of MeV) and to determine the corresponding integral quantities with only one exposure. This makes them especially advantageous for neutron field characterisation and workplace monitoring in neutron-producing facilities. One of the devices has spherical geometry and nearly isotropic response, the other one has cylindrical symmetry and it is only sensitive to neutrons incident along the cylind
