Subsidence of collarless uncemented femoral stems in total hips replacements performed for trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Collarless, uncemented, femoral stems give excellent results in elective hip replacements but few studies look at outcomes in trauma patients. The presence of osteoporosis and subsequent widened femoral canal may compromise the mechanical stability of uncemented femoral stems resulting in early subsidence. The aim of this study was to assess whether early subsidence occurred when collarless uncemented stems were used to treat trauma patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Post-operative radiographs of 46 patients, mean age 71, who underwent an uncemented, collarless, total hip replacem

Outcomes and risk factors of pulpotomy in mature permanent teeth with complicated crown fractures: A 12-60-month prospective clinical study.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs), especially complicated crown fractures (CCFs), challenge pulp preservation in mature teeth. This study evaluated outcomes and risk factors in mature permanent teeth treated with pulpotomy using iRoot BP Plus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective single-arm clinical trial included 47 mature permanent anterior teeth with CCFs and pulp exposures within 24 h post-trauma. Partial pulpotomy was performed under magnification, involving removal of 2-3 mm of coronal pulp, with hemostasis achieved within 5 min. The exposed pulp was capped with iR

A Novel Radiographic Indicator of Developmental Cervical Stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Developmental cervical stenosis of the spinal canal predisposes patients to neural compression and loss of function. The Torg-Pavlov ratio has been shown to provide high sensitivity but low specificity for identifying developmental cervical stenosis. A more sensitive and specific radiographic index has not been reported to our knowledge. The objective of this study was to develop and provide an objective, sensitive, and specific radiographic index to assess for developmental cervical stenosis. METHODS: The C3 through C6 levels of the cervical spine were analyzed on lateral radiogr

Age estimation of adults from dental radiographs.

Previous studies have shown that with advancing age the size of the dental pulp cavity is reduced as a result of secondary dentine deposit, so that measurements of this reduction can be used as an indicator of age. The aim of the present study was to find a method which could be used to estimate the chronological age of an adult from measurements of the size of the pulp on full mouth dental radiographs. The material consisted of periapical radiographs from 100 dental patients who had attended the clinics of the Dental Faculty in Oslo. The radiographs of six types of teeth from each jaw were me

Radiographic comparison of compression hip screws and cephalomedullary nails in stable femoral trochanteric fractures.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to radiographically compare cephalomedullary nails (CMN) and compression hip screws (CHS) in stable intertrochanteric femoral fractures, specifically assessing femoral offset (FO), neck-shaft angle (NSA), and leg length discrepancy (LLD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed 181 patients treated between October 2020 and March 2024. After exclusions, 59 patients (CHS: 32; CMN: 27) with AO/OTA 31A1 fractures were included. Radiographic parameters (NSA, FO, and LLD) were measured using pre- and postoperative radiographs and preoperative CT. Ro

In-hospital postoperative radiographs for instrumented single-level degenerative spinal fusions: utility after intraoperative fluoroscopy.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: There is a paucity of literature examining the clinical yield of in-hospital postoperative radiographs for patients who have had instrumented single-level spinal fusions with intraoperative fluoroscopic guidance. Many spinal surgeons consider postoperative standing radiographs to be the appropriate standard of care, even in patients who have an uneventful postoperative course. PURPOSE: To evaluate the additional clinical yield and cost-effectiveness of in-hospital postoperative standing radiographs for patients undergoing instrumented single-level cervical and lumbar fusio

Transluminal angioplasty in the treatment of arteriogenic impotence.

Factors bearing on the role of transluminal angioplasty in the management of arteriogenic impotence are considered. Our clinical experience indicates that arteriogenic impotence is frequent, either alone or combined with venogenic impotence. High quality diagnostic angiographic studies and their accurate interpretation are the prime requirements for proper patient selection. Numerous arteriographic adjuncts are required: vasodilation with intracavernosal injection of a papaverine-phentolamine mixture, selective internal pudendal injections, direct magnification, nonionic contrast agents, and t

Pierre Marie, 1916-1917: Functional radiographic imaging of vision and aphasia.

This article describes how Pierre Marie developed a radiographic method to localize functional areas in the brain of French World War I soldiers having sustained a penetrating craniocerebral injury. The brains cadavers were removed from their skulls and lead wires were placed in the Rolandic, Sylvian, and calcarine fissures, and major sulci. The brains were returned into their skulls and x-rays were taken using the same size and magnification used clinically in visually impaired or aphasic soldiers. The position of the wires outlining the fissures and sulci were averaged and traced on a sheet

Pulp Canal Obliteration Following Traumatic Dental Injury in an Upper Lateral Incisor: A Case Report with 3-year Follow-up.

Endodontic management of teeth afflicted with pulp canal obliteration faces a challenge due to the heightened risk of complications including excessive wear, perforation, and suboptimal chemomechanical preparation. This report aims to elucidate the clinical endodontic strategy employed in addressing pulp canal obliteration after a history of dental trauma and an associated periradicular lesion in an upper lateral incisor. A patient visited the dental emergency department with symptoms of apical swelling, acute persistent pain, and discoloration of tooth 22. Following comprehensive clinical eva

Placentoid bullous lesion of the lung.

Four adult patients presented with unilateral multicystic lung disease. The cysts had been detected years previously on chest radiographs in three patients. Two patients had histories of repeated childhood pneumonias. Preoperative diagnosis of bullous emphysema with rupture was made in three patients who presented with pneumothorax. Lobectomy was done in two patients and pneumonectomy in two patients. Macroscopically, each lung was spongy with cysts that contained gelatinous vesicular or grape-like structures resembling normal or molar placental tissue. Bullous emphysema was evident in one lun

Radiological assessment of Paget's disease of bone after treatment with the bisphosphonates EHDP and APD.

The effects of therapy on the osteolytic bone lesions of Paget's disease have been assessed from serial bone radiographs. Changes in the rate of progression of lytic "wedge" lesions were measured and alterations in the texture of lytic "blade" lesions were graded on an empirical scale. Useful matching was possible using standard radiographs, although special care was needed to avoid artefacts from suboptimal positioning, magnification and variation in exposure. Serial radiographs were obtained of 57 lytic blade lesions in 54 patients receiving treatment with the bisphosphonate 1-hydroxyethylid

Lumbar Microdiscectomy.

In most patients, the radiculopathy associated with lumbar disc herniation resolves nonoperatively. For patients in whom nonsurgical management has failed, microdiscectomy can be considered. Today, an operating microscope is preferred because of the collinear light and magnification offered. Alternatively, loupes and a headlight may be employed. The major steps of the procedure are (1) making a 2-cm vertical incision and then developing the corridor to the lamina subperiosteally or by using serial dilation techniques; (2) confirming the level of surgery radiographically prior to incision and o

Assessment of Root Resorption and Root Shape by Periapical and Panoramic Radiographs: A Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: One of the common findings encountered by the clinician at the end of orthodontic treatment is the apical root resorption. Root resorption occurs to various degrees. A severe form of root resorption is characterized by shortening of root for more than 4 mm or more than one-third of the total tooth length. A low incidence rate of resorption is observed based on radiographic findings for the diagnosis of root resorption, panoramic radiography, and periapical radiography. Hence, we evaluated the accuracy of panoramic radiographic films for assessing the root resorption in comparison

Radiographic calibration for pubic diastasis assessment in bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex: a phantom study.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of pubic diastasis is important for the surgical planning of patients with bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex. Understanding how the diastasis changes during surgical follow-up may help predict patient morbidity. Radiography can follow diastasis but may be affected by patient and technical imaging factors including body size, imaging protocol, and equipment. Using imaging calibration and anatomic ratios may mitigate differences due to these aspects. OBJECTIVE: Use imaging phantoms to assess the effect of radiographic calibration on measurements of pubic diastasis

Management of an Oblique Cervical Root Fracture in an Immature Maxillary Central Incisor: A Case Report.

Traumatic dental injuries in immature permanent teeth present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly when associated with root fractures. A 7-year-old boy presented with trauma to the anterior maxilla after a fall on the pavement. Right central incisor (#11), previously unerupted due to premature extraction of the primary predecessor, erupted rapidly within 2 weeks post-trauma, likely facilitated by dental trauma. Initial radiographic examination revealed an immature root with an open apex (Cvek Stage 1) and an oblique root fracture extending from the cervical region t
