Total beta-adrenoceptor density and beta 1- and beta 2-subtype distribution in right and left atria and in different ventricular regions from 14 failing and seven nonfailing human hearts have been compared. End-stage heart failure was due to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (n = 8) or ischaemic cardiomyopathy (n = 6). Microwave radiation decreased specific camphor binding to a membrane fraction of rat epithelium but not to a Triton X-100 extract of this fraction. Inhibition of the ligand binding did not depend on the modulation frequency of the microwave field in the region 1-100 Hz and was not a linear function of specific absorption rate (SAR). The decreased ligand binding was due to a shedding or release of the specific camphor-binding protein from the membrane into solution. It is highly probable that several other membrane proteins may be shed into solution during microwave exposure.

The binding potencies of 3 new beta 2 blocking drugs to beta receptors in the ciliary processes were studied by means of radioligand techniques. The drugs studied were IPS339, ICI118,551, and Sandoz L1 32-468. The order of potency of these drugs was IPS339 greater than Sandoz L1 32-468 greater than ICI118,551. The beta 2 dissociation constants (KDs) for these drugs were 0.90 nM, 6.60 nM, and 55 nM respectively. These results are compared with those for other adrenergic agents, including timolol. The potential role of topical beta 2 blockers in glaucoma is discussed.

gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentration was determined in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of acute and chronic schizophrenic patients, in persons with psycho-organic or personality disorders, and in nonpsychiatric controls. An evaluation of a radioreceptor assay (RRA) for the quantitation of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in serum resulted in intra- and interassay variations of 2.6 and 5.5% (average), respectively. Recovery of hCG in a preparation of second IRP-hCG gave an accuracy of 93.2%. BACKGROUND: The EGF receptor/ligand system seems to be involved in the regulation of gastric mucosa proliferation and progression of gastric carcinomas.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: EGF receptor levels were quantitatively determined in 47 gastric carcinomas by 125J [EGF] radioreceptor assays in membrane preparations of tumor samples or corresponding adjacent mucosa. The present ligand binding study showed that the rabbit pulmonary artery contained two subtypes of losartan-sensitive angiotensin receptor. The two receptor subtypes are differentially distributed.
