When It Rains It Pours...: Wernicke Encephalopathy with Sudden Blindness after Bariatric Surgery in a Patient with Congenital Deafness.

BACKGROUND: Malabsorption syndromes are known chronic complications of bariatric surgery. Therefore, it is recommended to take oral supplementation with multivitamins. Wernicke's encephalopathy represents an acute neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with alcoholism or severe malnutrition; sporadic cases of this potential complication related to bariatric surgery are described in the literature. We present a case of Wernicke's encephalopathy due to severe vitamin B1 deficiency after bariatric surgery. CASE REPORT: A 31-year-old woman with deaf-mutism from the age of 3 years old, operated 3 mo

Do parent-reported early indicators predict later developmental language disorder? A Raine Study investigation.

BACKGROUND: Developmental language disorder (DLD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions. Due to variable rates of language growth in children under 5 years, the early identification of children with DLD is challenging. Early indicators are often outlined by speech pathology regulatory bodies and other developmental services as evidence to empower caregivers in the early identification of DLD. AIMS: To test the predictive relationship between parent-reported early indicators and the likelihood of children meeting diagnostic criteria for DLD at 10 years of age as determined by

Raine syndrome: Report of a novel mutation and review of the different antenatal imaging modalities used to diagnose this disease.

INTRODUCTION: Raine syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized mainly by the presence of exophthalmos, choanal atresia or stenosis, osteosclerosis, and cerebral calcifications. There are around 50 cases described in the literature with a prevalence of less than 1/1,000,000. It is secondary to pathogenic variants in the FAM20 C gene, located on chromosome 7p22.3. CASE REPORT: We report a consanguineous family with three affected pregnancies. In the first two, exophthalmos and bone abnormalities were noted, ending in one intra-uterine demise and one neonatal death, without identi

In utero exposure to maternal stressful life events and risk of polycystic ovary syndrome in the offspring: The Raine Study.

BACKGROUND: PCOS is the most common endocrine disorder in reproductive age women. The origins of PCOS are unknown but experimental and limited human evidence suggests that greater prenatal exposure to androgens may predispose to PCOS. Experimental evidence suggests that maternal stressors may affect reproductive function in the offspring via changes in prenatal androgen exposure. In this present study, we aim to investigate whether maternal stressful life events during pregnancy are associated with polycystic ovary morphology (PCOM) or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adolescent offspring.

Nutrient Removal by Halloysite-Amended Mineral Matrices and Heavy Metal Retention in Rain Gardens Under Dynamic Hydraulic Flow Conditions.

Rain gardens are widely used for stormwater treatment; however, the performance of alternative sorbent materials under varying rainfall conditions remains insufficiently understood. In this study, the removal of nutrients and heavy metals was evaluated in laboratory-scale rain gardens amended with halloysite of two grain size fractions (1-2 mm and 2-4 mm) under rainfall events lasting 30 and 120 min. Three column systems were tested: a reference column containing dolomite, sand, and gravel (C1), and two halloysite-amended columns (C2 and C3). Synthetic stormwater containing N-NH4+, N-NO3-, P-P

Biochar of invasive plants alleviated impact of acid rain on soil microbial community structure and functionality better than liming.

Acid rain and invasive plants have quintessential adverse impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. As an environmentally safe method for disposal of invasive plants, we tested the effect of biochar produced from these plants in altering soil deterioration under acid rain as compared with lime. Given the impacts of the feedstock type and soil properties on the response of soil to the added biochar, we hypothesized that the microbial community and functions would respond differently to the charred invasive plants under acid rain. A pot experiment was conducted to examine the response of soil microbiom

Projected local rain events due to climate change and the impacts on waterborne diseases in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasing the number and intensity of extreme weather events in many parts of the world. Precipitation extremes have been linked to both outbreaks and sporadic cases of waterborne illness. We have previously shown a link between heavy rain and turbidity to population-level risk of sporadic cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis in a major Canadian urban population. The risk increased with 30 or more dry days in the 60 days preceding the week of extreme rain. The goal of this study was to investigate the change in cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis risk due to climate cha

Ontogenetic variation of metalloproteinases and plasma coagulant activity in venoms of wild Bothrops atrox specimens from Amazonian rain forest.

A comparative study of venoms from juvenile, sub-adult and adult wild Bothrops atrox specimens captured in Manaus region (Brazil) was performed. All venoms tested had acidic pH (5.5) and the human plasma coagulant activity was higher in venoms from juvenile and sub-adult specimens than in adults. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) showed that the most intense bands in adult venoms corresponded to polypeptides of 23 and 50kDa. The 23kDa protein was not detected in juvenile venoms. The 23 and 50kDa proteins were purified by two steps of reversed phase-HPLC follo

Ambio's legacy on monitoring, impact, and management of acid rain : This article belongs to Ambio's 50th Anniversary Collection. Theme: Acidification.

Early studies published in Ambio showed large-scale acidification of lakes in southern Sweden and Norway from acid rain. These studies were important for delimiting various scientific issues and thus for eventually contributing to legislation, which reduced emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides and helped to mitigate this major environmental problem. Long-term studies and monitoring in Sweden and Norway and at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire helped guide this legislation in Europe and in the USA.

On the Material Characterisation of Wind Turbine Blade Coatings: The Effect of Interphase Coating-Laminate Adhesion on Rain Erosion Performance.

Rain erosion damage, caused by repeated droplet impact on wind turbine blades, is a major cause for concern, even more so at offshore locations with larger blades and higher tip speeds. Due to the negative economic influence of blade erosion, all wind turbine Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are actively seeking solutions. In most cases, since the surface coating plays a decisive role in the blade manufacture and overall performance, it has been identified as an area where a solution may be obtained. In this research, two main coating technologies have been considered: In-mould coatings

Association of the occurrence of Brazilian spotted fever and Atlantic rain forest fragmentation in the São Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil.

Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF) is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. In the São Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR) it is transmitted by Amblyomma aureolatum ticks. In this region, annual lethality of the disease can reach 80% and spatial occurrence depends on environmental factors and more particularly on the presence and interaction of domestic and wild carnivores as well as the presence and characteristics of the remnant Atlantic Rain Forest patches. This study analyzed the association between forest fragmentation and its influence on the risk of occurrence of the

Neither rain nor hail nor sleet nor snow: provider perspectives on the challenges of weather for home and community care.

This paper contributes to the literature on the geographies of care and caregiving by examining the implications of weather for providing home and community care for children and older adults. Integrating research from two previous qualitative studies of formal and informal care provisioning in Ontario, Canada, the authors re-analyzed semi-structured interviews with 83 directors, managers, paid staff, volunteers and family members to examine the challenges they faced when providing care during the winter season. Similar to other settings where winter conditions like snow, ice and cold temperat

Sex-specific effects of birth weight on longitudinal behavioural outcomes in children and adolescents: findings from the raine study.

Previous cross-sectional studies suggest that birth weight (BW) is associated with aggression-, social- and attention problems differently in boys and girls. We sought to test if these differences could be confirmed in a longitudinal study. The 1989 Raine Study provided prospectively collected data on perinatal variables and repeated child behaviour checklist assessments from ages 5 to 17. Linear mixed effects models provided crude and adjusted relationships between BW and childhood behaviour at a conservative significance threshold using prenatal maternal covariables in adjusted models. Sensi

Interspecific differences in the responses of root phosphatase activities and morphology to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization in Bornean tropical rain forests.

Soil organic phosphorus (P) compounds can be the main P source for plants in P-limited tropical rainforests. Phosphorus occurs in diverse chemical forms, including monoester P, diester P, and phytate, which require enzymatic hydrolysis by phosphatase into inorganic P before assimilation by plants. The interactions between plant interspecific differences in organic P acquisition strategies via phosphatase activities with root morphological traits would lead to P resource partitioning, but they have not been rigorously evaluated. We measured the activities of three classes of phosphatases (phosp

Recurrent variant c.1680C>A in FAM20C gene and genotype-phenotype correlation in a patient with Raine syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bi-allelic mutations in FAM20C gene are known to cause a rare genetic disorder- Raine syndrome (RS). The FAM20C protein binds calcium and phosphorylates proteins involved in biomineralization of bones and teeth. RS is recognized as an osteosclerotic bone dysplasia. It is characterized by distinctive facial features, generalized osteosclerosis and respiratory insufficiency along with periosteal bone formation. RS is typically described as being an aggressive skeletal dysplasia with death in the neonatal period or early infancy. However, in the recent past an increasing number of ind

A Case of Hypercalcemia in an Immunocompetent Patient with Disseminated Mycobacterium marinum Infection with a Rain Barrel as the Most Likely Primary Source.

UNLABELLED: Infection with Mycobacterium marinum is common in fish, and so human infection usually arises from contact with contaminated water or fish. A solitary papulonodular lesion on a finger or hand is the typical presentation. Disseminated infections are rare and mostly seen in immunocompromised patients. We present a rare case of disseminated M. marinum infection presenting with polyarthritis, tenosynovitis, dactylitis, and (sub)cutaneous and intramuscular lesions in an immunocompetent patient. This case was complicated by hypercalcemia, renal failure and eventually death. A contaminate

Rationale and protocol for the 7- and 8-year longitudinal assessments of eye health in a cohort of young adults in the Raine Study.

INTRODUCTION: Eye diseases and visual impairment more commonly affect elderly adults, thus, the majority of ophthalmic cohort studies have focused on older adults. Cohort studies on the ocular health of younger adults, on the other hand, have been few. The Raine Study is a longitudinal study that has been following a cohort since their birth in 1989-1991. As part of the 20-year follow-up of the Raine Study, participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination. As part of the 27- and 28-year follow-ups, eye assessments are being conducted and the data collected will be compared with those of
