Successful Rehabilitation and Release of a Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) After Arthrodesis of a Metacarpophalangeal Joint Luxation.

The metacarpophalangeal joint is a compound joint composed of the major and minor metacarpals and the minor and major digits. Although the motion of this joint is restricted, it plays an important role in minor adjustments in flight. The ability of birds to gain lift and fly with limited or inhibited function of this joint has not been well studied in raptors. This report represents the first published case of successful rehabilitation and release of a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) after complete arthrodesis of a metacarpophalangeal joint luxation. The patient was presented to the Loui

Strength of the 'island rule' in birds is positively associated with absence of avian predators.

The similar characteristics shared by island environments have been shown to lead to common patterns of adaptations in island species, commonly referred to as the 'insularity syndrome'. A well-known example is the 'island rule', where large species become smaller on islands and small species become larger, leading to well-known cases of dwarfism and gigantism. This pattern was recently verified on a global scale, but the mechanisms underlying it have been poorly investigated. Here, we focused on the role of released pressure from predation and competition experienced by island birds. Using 120

A twist of the tail in turning maneuvers of bird-inspired drones.

A banked turn is a common flight maneuver observed in birds and aircraft. To initiate the turn, whereas traditional aircraft rely on the wing ailerons, most birds use a variety of asymmetric wing-morphing control techniques to roll their bodies and thus redirect the lift vector to the direction of the turn. Nevertheless, when searching for prey, soaring raptors execute steady banked turns without exhibiting observable wing movements apart from the tail twisting around the body axis. Although tail twisting can compensate for adverse yaw, functioning similarly to the vertical tail in aircraft, h

Clinically relevant antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli from black kites in southwestern Siberia: a genetic and phenotypic investigation.

Wild birds including raptors can act as vectors of clinically relevant bacteria with antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli in black kites (Milvus migrans) inhabiting localities in proximity to human-influenced environments in southwestern Siberia and investigate their virulence and plasmid contents. A total of 51 E. coli isolates mostly with multidrug resistance (MDR) profiles were obtained from cloacal swabs of 35 (64%, n = 55) kites. Genomic analyses of 36 whole genome sequenced E. coli isolates showed: (i) hig

Screening plastic chemicals in birds: insights into environmental exposure of cinereous vultures.

Plastic chemicals are a growing concern due to their widespread detection in the environment and their impact on humans and wildlife. Raptors are commonly used as terrestrial bioindicator species for numerous contaminants but remain overlooked regarding their exposure to plastic chemicals. Here, we evaluated the occurrence and concentrations of 8 bisphenols, 17 phthalates, and 9 trace elements in the blood of chicks (n = 51) of an endangered scavenger raptor species, the Cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), heavily exposed to plastic in Madrid, Central Spain, by frequently feeding at a landf

mTOR promotes the formation and growth of tertiary lymphoid tissues in the kidney.

Tertiary lymphoid tissues (TLTs) are ectopic lymphoid tissues that form de novo in nonlymphoid organs. In this study, we demonstrate that the kidneys of aged mice with a renal tubule-specific knockout of autophagy-related 7 (Atg7) contain numerous and large TLTs. p-S6 protein, a marker of mTORC1, was elevated in the tubules adjacent to the TLTs as well as within the TLTs themselves. In Atg7-/- kidneys, tubular injury and increased proinflammatory cytokines were observed, both of which are known to promote TLT formation and growth. In mice with either polycystic kidney disease (Pkd1RC/RC) or ki

Experimental West Nile virus infection in Gyr-Saker hybrid falcons.

West Nile disease (WND) has become a major public and veterinary health concern since the appearance of West Nile virus (WNV) in New York in 1999. The following panzootic spread in the U.S. and the recent WNV outbreaks in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin have increased interest in WND. Despite considerable investigation of WNV infection in birds, the effects of WNV on avian populations are still largely unknown. In Europe, raptors have been found to be particularly susceptible to WNV infection, but studies in birds of prey are lacking. To our knowledge, the present study is the first to repo

New mitochondrial genomes of parasites belonging to the Leucocytozoon toddi and Haemoproteus nisi groups (Haemosporida, Apicomplexa).

BACKGROUND: Avian haemosporidians are single-celled eukaryotic parasites of vertebrates that require dipteran vectors for transmission. The genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon currently comprise over 5000 parasite lineages based on a 478-bp section of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, which is the standard DNA barcode for avian haemosporidians. The mitochondrial genomes of apicomplexan parasites are highly condensed, with a length of approximately 6000 bp, containing three coding genes (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, cytochrome c oxidase subunit III and cytochrome b) and disp

Spontaneous Wing Tip Edema in Captive Birds of Prey: Review of 41 Cases in the United Kingdom (2004-2022).

There is limited literature regarding wing tip edema (WTE) in raptors, and much of our current understanding of the condition is based on anecdotal reports. The aims of this retrospective study were to describe the clinical features of WTE in birds of prey, to identify prognostic factors for return to flight and patient survival following diagnosis, and to develop and assess the clinical significance of a novel WTE grading system. Between 2004 and 2022, 41 cases of WTE were identified in 39 captive birds. No cases were found in wild birds. Harris's hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus), lanner falcons

Burrowing owls as potential phoretic hosts of ground squirrel fleas during a plague epizootic.

During the course of a plague epizootic, decimation of rodent host populations may result in the transfer of fleas to alternate or phoretic hosts, including to sympatric raptors that prey on rodents. We studied flea abundance and flea species assemblages on burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) in southwestern Idaho before (2012 - 2014), during (2015 - 2016), and after (2017) an epizootic of plague in Piute ground squirrels (Urocitellis mollis). We examined (1) if a larger proportion of burrowing owl nests contained fleas, (2) the likelihood that owls within a high flea abundance class

Neuronal mTORC1 Is Required for Maintaining the Nonreactive State of Astrocytes.

Astrocytes respond to CNS insults through reactive astrogliosis, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. In this study, we show that inactivation of mechanistic target of rapamycin complex (mTORC1) signaling in postnatal neurons induces reactive astrogliosis in mice. Ablation of Raptor (an mTORC1-specific component) in postmitotic neurons abolished mTORC1 activity and produced neurons with smaller soma and fewer dendrites, resulting in microcephaly and aberrant behavior in adult mice. Interestingly, extensive astrogliosis without significant astrocyte proliferation and glial scar formation

Grb10 promotes lipolysis and thermogenesis by phosphorylation-dependent feedback inhibition of mTORC1.

Identification of key regulators of lipid metabolism and thermogenic functions has important therapeutic implications for the current obesity and diabetes epidemic. Here, we show that Grb10, a direct substrate of mechanistic/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), is expressed highly in brown adipose tissue, and its expression in white adipose tissue is markedly induced by cold exposure. In adipocytes, mTOR-mediated phosphorylation at Ser501/503 switches the binding preference of Grb10 from the insulin receptor to raptor, leading to the dissociation of raptor from mTOR and downregulation of mTOR

Growing skull fracture in a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis).

Growing skull fractures have been reported in humans for many years, usually resulting from injury to the soft skull during the rapid growth period of an infant's life. Nestling raptors have thin, fragile skulls, a rapid growth rate, and compete aggressively for food items. Skull trauma may occur, which may lead to the development of a growing skull fracture. Growing skull fractures may be under-diagnosed in raptor rehabilitation facilities that do not have access to advanced technologic equipment. Three-dimensional (3-D) computed tomography was used to diagnose a growing skull fracture in a r

New insights into the genome and transmission of the microsporidian pathogen Nosema muscidifuracis.

INTRODUCTION: Nosema is a diverse genus of unicellular microsporidian parasites of insects and other arthropods. Nosema muscidifuracis infects parasitoid wasp species of Muscidifurax zaraptor and M. raptor (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), causing ~50% reduction in longevity and ~90% reduction in fecundity. METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, we report the first assembly of the N. muscidifuracis genome (14,397,169 bp in 28 contigs) of high continuity (contig N50 544.3 Kb) and completeness (BUSCO score 97.0%). A total of 2,782 protein-coding genes were annotated, with 66.2% of the genes having two copies an

High Frequency of Lead Exposure in the Population of an Endangered Australian Top Predator, the Tasmanian Wedge-Tailed Eagle (Aquila audax fleayi).

Lead poisoning, mainly through incidental ingestion of lead ammunition in carcasses, is a threat to scavenging and predatory bird species worldwide. In Australia, shooting for animal control is widespread, and a range of native scavenging species are susceptible to lead exposure. However, the prevalence of lead exposure in Australia's scavenging and predatory birds is largely unknown. We evaluated the degree to which the Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle (Aquila audax fleayi), an endangered Australian raptor and facultative scavenger, showed evidence of lead exposure. We detected lead in 100% of fe

Second generation anticoagulant rodenticides in predatory birds: Probabilistic characterisation of toxic liver concentrations and implications for predatory bird populations in Canada.

Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are widely used to control rodent pests but exposure and poisonings occur in non-target species, such as birds of prey. Liver residues are often analysed to detect exposure in birds found dead but their use to assess toxicity of SGARs is problematic. We analysed published data on hepatic rodenticide residues and associated symptoms of anticoagulant poisoning from 270 birds of prey using logistic regression to estimate the probability of toxicosis associated with different liver SGAR residues. We also evaluated exposure to SGARs on a national

Blunt traumatic hollow viscus and mesenteric injuries: a comparison of the currently available scoring systems.

BACKGROUND: Blunt traumatic hollow viscus and mesenteric injury (THVMI) remains a diagnostic challenge. In 2020, our group proposed the Niguarda Score, a simple tool to predict clinically relevant THVMI based on six binary CT findings. This study aimed to evaluate the Niguarda Score and compare its performance with established CT-based and combined THVMI scoring systems. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of all consecutive adult patients undergoing contrast-enhanced abdominal CT after blunt trauma at the Niguarda trauma center from 2019 to 2021. Differential response of skeletal muscles to mTORC1 signaling during atrophy and hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle mass is determined by the balance between protein synthesis and degradation. Mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is a master regulator of protein translation and has been implicated in the control of muscle mass. Inactivation of mTORC1 by skeletal muscle-specific deletion of its obligatory component raptor results in smaller muscles and a lethal dystrophy. Moreover, raptor-deficient muscles are less oxidative through changes in the expression PGC-1α, a critical determinant of mitochondrial biogenesis. These results suggest that activation of mTORC1 migh

A Method Scope Extension for the Simultaneous Analysis of POPs, Current-Use and Banned Pesticides, Rodenticides, and Pharmaceuticals in Liver. Application to Food Safety and Biomonitoring.

The screening of hundreds of substances belonging to multiple chemical classes in liver is required in areas such as food safety or biomonitoring. We adapted a previous QuEChERS-based method in blood to the liver matrix and applied to these fields of study. The validation of the method allowed the inclusion of 351 contaminants, 80% with a LOQ < 2 ng/g. In the analysis of 42 consumer liver samples, we detected trace levels of 29 different contaminants. The most frequent and concentrated was 4,4'-DDE. POPs accounted for 66% of the compounds detected. In no case was the MRL reached for any of the
