Reading and assessing qualitative research.

What makes doctors burn out? What is it like to have epilepsy? Why do smokers not give up? Qualitative research makes it possible to look behind the statistics and to study health and health care from the inside: to find out what it is really like for the health professionals who provide the care and for the patients on the receiving end.

Computer-assisted reading of mammograms.

Techniques developed in computer vision and automated pattern recognition can be applied to assist radiologists in reading mammograms. With the introduction of direct digital mammography this will become a feasible approach. A radiologist in breast cancer screening can use findings of the computer as a second opinion, or as a pointer to suspicious regions. This may increase the sensitivity and specificity of screening programs, and it may avoid the need for double reading. In this paper methods which have been developed for automated detection of mammographic abnormalities are reviewed. Progra

Reading speed in pure alexia.

This study investigated possible causes of differences in reading speed between two alexic patients who read words letter by letter. As both patients appeared to rely on serial left-to-right processing of letters within words, the difference in reading speed did not seem to be related to any differences in the extent to which the patients could recognize letters in words in parallel or 'ends-in'. Differences in reading speed also seemed to be unrelated to the patients ability to identify individual letters since their letter recognition accuracy was very similar. Furthermore, although patient

Reading attainment and juvenile delinquency.

Structural equation modelling was used with data from a longitudinal study of child development (N = 698) to examine relationships between early reading attainment and antisocial behaviour at ages 7 and 9 years and subsequent reading and delinquent behaviour in adolescence. While reading, analysed as a continuous variable, did not directly influence later delinquency, antisocial behaviour during the early school years was strongly predictive of delinquency at age 15 years, particularly for boys, and had a detrimental effect on reading. These findings were independent of social disadvantage, an

Effective interventions for reading disability.

A simple, readily accessible, and inexpensive intervention which produces immediate improvements in the reading comprehension abilities of reading-disabled children has been found. The intervention consists of colored overlays, or overlays which reduce the contrast of printed materials. This intervention produces reading comprehension gains in approximately 80 percent of the reading-disabled children tested.

Phonological reading: phenomena and paradoxes.

We report a single case study of a patient with an acquired dyslexia. KT had no difficulty in reading regular words and non-words at a normal speed, but he made numerous errors in reading irregular words. These were characterised by "regularisation" of the letter string. We have documented his residual reading abilities and in addition have investigated other aspects of his residual reading skills. We found that his performance on visual lexical processing tasks was very satisfactory, there was no effect of priming from a correctly read irregular word and his reading of polysyllabic words was

Developing students' reading competence in an EFL context through annotated reading: A blended instructional design.

Annotated reading is generally believed an effective way to improve learners' reading competence. However, most existing studies focus on online annotated reading while neglecting to scaffold students throughout the entire learning process. To address the gap, this study proposed a four-stage annotated reading framework and employed a quasi-experimental design to evaluate its effectiveness in developing students' reading competence. Concurrently, students' perceptions and actualization of this pedagogy were also investigated. Results demonstrated that this framework had potential in cultivatin

Testing variations in sublexical units to improve word reading for students with word reading disabilities.

Word reading disabilities (WRD) represent the most common disability in reading; however, questions remain regarding how to design instruction that results in significant, long-lasting effects on word reading outcomes for individuals who experience considerable difficulties that persist within and beyond primary grades. Two related studies examined effects of variations in targeted sublexical content on word reading efficiency of students in grades 2-4 with WRD. Study 1 addressed effects of instruction and practice targeting complex vs. simple letter units. Study 2 addressed effects of instruc

Implementing silent reading speed and oculomotor behaviour as a clinical measure of functional reading performance.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Visual acuity offers limited value as a clinical endpoint for evaluating functional vision deficits. Alternative measures, such as the assessment of reading efficiency, address how vision-related challenges affect quality of life. BACKGROUND: Although oral reading speed is typically employed as the principal measure of reading performance, it fails to simulate everyday reading activities, for which silent reading is preferred. In this study, eye movements were analysed additionally to reading speed, as potentially useful clinical indicators of silent reading performance.

Evidence-Based Reading Instruction for Secondary Students With Reading Difficulties Within Multitiered Systems of Support.

Christian Scott recently returned home from college and was set to begin his first year as a middle school special education teacher. During his first meeting with his new principal, he learned about his teaching schedule. His principal, Mrs. Walker, explained their district was making a push for using multitiered systems of support (MTSS) as a framework for instruction. Her school would identify students with reading difficulties based on their performance on prior state reading tests and use this information to develop student schedules that allow students to receive additional reading inter

Improving Reading Skills Using a Computerized Phonological Training Program in Early Readers with Reading Difficulties.

In the last years, there has been a big effort to identify risk factors for reading difficulties and to develop new methodologies to help struggling readers. It has been shown that early intervention is more successful than late intervention, and that intensive training programs can benefit children with reading difficulties. The aim of our study is to investigate the effectiveness of an intensive computerized phonological training program designed to improve reading performance in a sample of children with reading difficulties at the early stages of their reading learning process. Thirty-two

Altered gray matter development in pre-reading children with a family history of reading disorder.

Reading disorders are common in children and can impact academic success, mental health, and career prospects. Reading is supported by network of interconnected left hemisphere brain regions, including temporo-parietal, occipito-temporal, and inferior-frontal circuits. Poor readers often show hypoactivation and reduced gray matter volumes in this reading network, with hyperactivation and increased volumes in the posterior right hemisphere. We assessed gray matter development longitudinally in pre-reading children aged 2-5 years using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (N = 32, 110 MRI scans; mea

Selective visual attention skills differentially predict decoding and reading comprehension performance across reading ability profiles.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between selective visual attention (SVA), reading decoding, listening comprehension and reading comprehension in children with and without a reading disorder. METHODS: We used longitudinal data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. We split children into four groups: Typical Readers, Dyslexics, Poor Comprehenders and Comorbid Reading Disorder. We included measures of single word reading, nonword reading, spelling, phonological processing, vocabulary, receptive language, nonverbal intelligence, selective

Effects of sequential and discrete rapid naming on reading in Japanese children with reading difficulty.

To clarify whether rapid naming ability itself is a main underpinning factor of rapid automatized naming tests (RAN) and how deep an influence the discrete decoding process has on reading, we performed discrete naming tasks and discrete hiragana reading tasks as well as sequential naming tasks and sequential hiragana reading tasks with 38 Japanese schoolchildren with reading difficulty. There were high correlations between both discrete and sequential hiragana reading and sentence reading, suggesting that some mechanism which automatizes hiragana reading makes sentence reading fluent. Cortical activation during word reading and picture naming in dyslexic and non-reading-impaired children.

OBJECTIVE: In a recent study on picture naming and word reading in dyslexics and control children we found a combination of normal picture retrieval times and severe reading impairments in dyslexics. Therefore, we hypothesize that brain response patterns differ between patients and controls during word reading, but are similar in picture naming as a non-letter mediated task. METHODS: Time course of brain activation was investigated by magnetoencephalography during word reading and picture naming in 9 dyslexic children and 13 age-matched controls (aged 9-10 years). RESULTS: We found 5 consecu

Separating genuine cases of reading disability from reading deficits caused by predominantly inattentive ADHD behavior.

Conventional methods of differentiating reading disability (RD) caused by deficits in decoding skills or comprehension from poor reading performance caused by inconsistent attention associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have produced equivocal results. This study presents a model of differential diagnosis of attentional problems and RD that differs from these conventional approaches. The new diagnostic procedure uses intraindividual differences seen in the performance of at-risk learners on tasks related to reading that vary in their sensitivity to the sustained atten

A reading-level design study of phonological skills underlying fourth-grade children's word reading difficulties.

A 3-group reading-level design was used to investigate phonological analysis, verbal working memory, and pseudoword reading performance in less skilled fourth-grade readers. Children were given phonological oddity tasks assessing their sensitivity to subsyllabic and phonemic units, together with standardized tests of verbal working memory and pseudoword reading. Less skilled fourth-grade readers performed lower than both chronological age and reading-level controls on the phonological oddity and pseudoword reading tests. Less skilled fourth-grade readers performed at the same level as skilled

Reading literature on kinship in a clinical context: a qualitative study of a reading group for nurses.

Family members, relatives and friends are all affected when someone is hospitalised with a life-threatening illness. However, they often feel neglected and sometimes ignored by healthcare professionals. To address this, the reading of literature has been used in various clinical contexts in an attempt to humanise the care of patients and their relatives. Reading fiction enables healthcare professionals to imaginatively enter relatives' perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of their experiences, which may in turn enhance family-centred care in clinical practice. However, research on ho

Impact of text-to-speech features on the reading comprehension of children with reading and language difficulties.

This study investigated the reading comprehension scores of students with reading and language difficulties after reading a passage with and without text-to-speech (TTS). Students, ages 8 to 12 years, read five passages under the following conditions: (a) silent read, (b) read aloud, (c) listen only, (d) TTS with no highlighting, and (e) TTS with highlighting. Students answered multiple-choice comprehension questions following each condition. Mixed ANOVAs were performed to determine whether TTS improved reading comprehension. TTS significantly improved comprehension in comparison to no TTS, an

Reading Fluency in Chinese Children With Reading Disabilities and/or ADHD: A Key Role for Morphology.

The Triangle Model of Reading proposes that phonology, orthography, and semantics are crucial to understand word reading and reading disability (RD). Morphology has been added as a binding agent to this model. However, it is unclear how these variables relate to word reading in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or comorbid ADHD and RD (ADHD+RD). This study examined the performance of Chinese children with RD, ADHD, or ADHD+RD in phonology, orthography, semantics, and morphology, and investigated whether morphology made an additional contribution beyond the other ski
