Meticulous antenatal screening for maternal syphilis can prevent congenital syphilis. In the event of inadequate antenatal screening, determination of reagin reactivity on cord blood becomes mandatory. A new simple and sensitive in-vitro method for the diagnosis of type 1 (IgE-mediated) hypersensitivity in man is described. Sliced human skin is passively sensitized by reaginic serum from allergic patients and the presence of antigen-specific IgE on the sensitized slices is detected by assay of antigen-evoked histamine release. Serum from 12 out of 14 patients with clinical respiratory allergy and positive skin tests gave significant antigen-specific histamine release. Venereal spirochetosis of rabbits was studied in naturally infected rabbits from an enzootically infected colony containing inbred, partially inbred, and mutant bearing rabbits, and in experimentally infected rabbits from a hysterectomy-derived colony. We have selected 13 babies presenting with atopic dermatitis during exclusive breast feeding. After evaluation of reaginic reaction, we detected beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) in breast milk and babies sera before and after maternal elimination diet and after maternal challenge. beta-Lactoglobulin was present only in the sera of infants ingesting breast milk containing BLG.
