CD8+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) are severely deficient in cytolysis, a defect that may permit tumor escape from immune-mediated destruction. Immune responses lead to expression of immunoregulatory molecules on T cells, including natural killer (NK) receptors, such as CD94/NKG2A on CD8(+) T cells; these receptors restrain CD8(+) responses, thereby preventing T-cell exhaustion in chronic infections and limiting immunopathology. Here, we examined the requirements for inducing CD94/NKG2A on T cells responding to antigen. In vitro, moderate induction of CD94/NKG2A expression occurred after exposure of naive CD8(+) (but not CD4(+)) cells to CD3 ligation or specific peptide. Surprisingly, expression was inhibited by CD28/B7 costimulation.

A case of intestinal cytotoxic/suppressor T-cell lymphoma with repeated episodes of perforation was seen in a 77-year-old Japanese male who was admitted complaining of severe abdominal pain accompanied by high grade fever. BACKGROUND: Infiltration of the kidney by mononuclear cells is a prominent feature of active Heymann nephritis (HN). Low expression of T-cell receptor-CD3 (TCR-CD3) complex, a rare cause of combined immunodeficiency, has only recently begun to be recognized. Here we report a four-year-old boy who has defective TCR-CD3 complex expression presenting with recurrent chest infections and pulmonary symptoms implying bronchial asthma. In our opinion, this entity should be borne in mind as the possible underlying defect in children with combined immunodeficiency having signs and symptoms of humoral immunodeficiency.

The quantitative distribution and phenotype of gamma/delta lymphocytes in the peripheral blood (PBL), tumour draining lymph node (LNL) and tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) from breast carcinoma patients were determined by one- and two-colour flow cytometry.
