Development and distribution of refractive error in children with Down's syndrome.

AIM: Previous studies have described the emmetropisation process as inactive in Down's syndrome (DS). However, these studies investigated only a small age range of children-either young children or teenagers. The present study aims to describe refractive error development and distribution in DS throughout childhood and early teenage years. METHODS: Subjects were recruited from the Cardiff University Down's Syndrome Vision Research cohort. Refractive error was measured using Mohindra retinoscopy. Subjects were grouped into 15 yearly age groups to allow a cross-sectional assessment of refractiv

Prevalence of refractive error in the United States, 1999-2004.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of refractive error in the United States. METHODS: The 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) used an autorefractor to obtain refractive error data on a nationally representative sample of the US noninstitutionalized, civilian population 12 years and older. Using data from the eye with a greater absolute spherical equivalent (SphEq) value, we defined clinically important refractive error as follows: hyperopia, SphEq value of 3.0 diopters (D) or greater; myopia, SphEq value of -1.0 D or less; and astigmatism, cylinder of 1.0 D

Refractive error at birth and its relation to gestational age.

PURPOSE: The refractive status of premature infants is not well studied. This study was done to find the norms of refractive error in newborns at different gestational ages. METHODS: One thousand two hundred three (1203) eyes were examined for refractive error by streak retinoscopy within the first week of life between June 2001 and September 2002. Tropicamide eye drops (0.8%) with phenylephrine 0.5% were used to achieve cycloplegia and mydriasis. The refractive error was measured in the vertical and horizontal meridia in both eyes and was recorded to the nearest dioptre (D). The neonates wer

Changes in refractive error for exotropes treated with overminus lenses.

The refractive changes of pediatric patients who were prescribed overminus lenses for exotropia were evaluated. Overminus lenses means additional minus power over the lenses required to correct the refractive error at distance. Forty exotropic patients, ages 1 to 15 years, were prescribed overminus lenses (-0.50 D to -3.75 D) for a period of 9 to 86 months. A small but significant correlation was found between the initial refractive error and the mean annual change toward myopia. Other factors such as age when treatment was given, duration of therapy, amount of overminus, and the amount of the

Retinal function in high refractive error assessed electroretinographically.

The retinal function of patients with high refractive error was studied electroretinographically. Thirty-one hypermetropic patients, 7 myopic patients, and 7 patients with either unilateral or bilateral aphakia participated in the study. The ERG responses were measured in the light- and dark-adapted states. It was found that myopic eyes were characterised by subnormal amplitude but normal pattern, expressed by normal relationship between the b-wave amplitude and the a-wave amplitude. In aphakia the ERG responses were of normal amplitude and pattern. However, the hypermetropic patients could be

Refractive errors associated with hemangiomas of the eyelids and orbit in infancy.

Asymmetrical refractive errors, both astigmatic and myopic, were associated with infantile hemangiomas of the eyelids and orbit in 46% of 37 patients who had large lesions and upper eyelid involvement predisposing to the ammetropia. The axis of the astigmatic error related to the location of the eyelid hemangioma and correlated closely with keratometric measurements of corneal astigmatism. The refractive errors tended to be stable despite eventual resolution of the hemangiomas. Efforts to combat strabismic and refractive amblyopia were rewarding in many patients. A history of complete eyelid o

[Correction of refractive errors by subtractive corneal surgery: History and perspectives].

The goal of this review is to trace the history of refractive correction, from the earliest optical devices to modern refractive surgical techniques. Following the invention of spectacles in the Middle Ages, the first corneal procedures, such as Sato's and Fyodorov's keratotomies and Barraquer's keratomileusis, highlighted the limitations of early mechanical approaches. In the 1980s, the advent of the excimer laser revolutionized refractive surgery with the introduction of PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) and subsequently LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis). The development of the f

Distribution of refractive errors and horizontal concomitant strabismus in Iraqi children.

Horizontal concomitant strabismus is a common pediatric ocular disorder influenced by underlying refractive error patterns, yet evidence from Iraq remains limited. This study characterized refractive profiles in esotropia and exotropia and identified refractive predictors of each subtype. In this retrospective multicenter clinic-based case-comparison study, medical records of 2,256 children aged 4-15 years evaluated at three tertiary pediatric ophthalmology centers in Iraq were reviewed; 1,012 met the criteria for horizontal concomitant strabismus (642 esotropia and 370 exotropia), while 1,244
