The authors used semistructured interviews to examine exile-related stressors affecting a sample of 28 adult Bosnian refugees in Chicago. The interviews covered 3 areas: life in prewar Bosnia, the journey of exile, and, most centrally, life in Chicago. Primary sources of exile-related distress included social isolation and the loss of community, separation from family members, the loss of important life projects, a lack of environmental mastery, poverty and related stressors such as inadequate housing, and the loss of valued social roles. The implications of these findings for mental health in

A parasitological survey of refugees based in Juba, Sudan, involving 241 faecal samples, revealed that 66% of the population harboured intestinal helminths. The most commonly found infection was hookworm (36%), followed by Schistosoma mansoni (26%), Strongyloides stercoralis (20%), Hymenolepis nana (11%), Ascaris lumbricoides (1.2%), Trichuris trichiura (0.8%) and Taenia sp. (0.4%). Many of the specimens (42%) harboured a single infection, 21% had double, 2% triple and 1% quadruple infections. Parasite prevalences and intensities were analysed in relation to age, sex, religion and occupation:

Delusions of fatal contagion were encountered in about 10% of refugee psychiatric patients from Southeast Asia belonging to one ethnic group, the Hmong. Psychotic depression was the most common diagnosis among the Hmong patients with delusions of contagion, whereas paranoid and schizophrenic diagnoses predominate in patients with similar delusions from other refugee groups. Some cases also occurred as a shared delusional disorder. Associated findings included isolation from the community, intrafamilial conflict, failure to acculturate, and sexual frustration or conflict. Most patients responde

During the summer of 1975 an ongoing outbreak of conjunctivitis occurred among Vietnamese refugees temporarily housed at a U.S. mainland camp. Twenty-two per cent of surveyed refugees gave a history of the disease and 10% were documented as having clinical conjunctivitis at the time of the survey. Fifty-six per cent of documented cases were in children less than 10 years of age. The attack rate among American camp personnel was 4%. Comprehensive microbiologic analysis revealed multiple potential pathogens in most cases, but the recovery of adenovirus 8 (AV8) in 81% of cases cultured within two

What does everyday resistance look like among dominated populations experiencing paternalistic care rather than extraction? Research on everyday resistance emerged from contexts where power extracts surplus from the oppressed. In this scholarship, the backstage is a space where the dominated cultivate hidden transcripts to cope with oppression, while the frontstage, where performances are enacted to those in power, is primary. Inversions of this order, when they occur, are momentary. Using ethnographic fieldwork in two Tanzanian refugee camps, we show that under benevolent oppression-control j

Since 1978, the Rohingya population has faced multiple humanitarian crises, including racial disparities, which significantly escalated during 2017, leading to widespread exile from Myanmar. Reportedly, violence, persecution, and trauma have posed grievous impacts on the mental health of these forcibly displaced people. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the evidence regarding the overall epidemiologic burden of psychological problems of Rohingya refugees with their associated factors. We evaluated five major databases and additional sources till July 31, 2024, and included articles accor

The number of asylum seekers and refugees in Switzerland has increased over the past 20 years, many of whom come from countries where the epidemiology of infectious diseases is different from that of Switzerland. In this review, we discuss the considerations taken into account when deciding which diseases to screen for in asylum seekers and refugees, and compare the strategies proposed by different countries. An overview of the epidemiology, clinical presentation, screening methods, and treatment strategies is provided for HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, strongyloidiasis, schistosomiasis

There is a large burden of treatable dermatologic conditions in refugee populations. Parasitic infestations are particularly common when there are barriers to basic hygiene, crowded living or travel conditions, and lack of access to health care. Body lice are associated with anemia and can transmit a variety of diseases; chronic impetigo secondary to scabies is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease globally. Dermatologists have unique skills to identify skin infections, inflammatory diseases, and infestations. Appropriate dermatologic care has the potential to improve overall outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Ecuador is a major host country for Colombians fleeing violence and Venezuelans escaping a complex humanitarian crisis, many of whom are pregnant women.
METHODS: We used national birth registry data (2018-2020) to compare the maternal care and infant outcomes of Venezuelan and Colombian immigrants with Ecuadorian nationals.
RESULTS: Venezuelan immigrants had a lower adjusted odds (AOR) for adequate prenatal care (AOR = 0.64;95%CI = 0.62,0.67) but a higher AOR for institutional (AOR = 2.68;95%CI = 1.84,3.93) and C-section delivery (AOR = 1.28;95%CI = 1.23,1.32) and birthing infant

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the flow of migrants and refugees to EU nations is recorded in high amounts. By travelling through ships or nonhygienic boats most of them tend to have a high amount of risk in getting health issues. However, getting proper healthcare is a funda-mental human right since refugees or migrants can actively contribute to the development of host countries and their native nationalities. Therefore, in this paper, we try to explore the common diseases that happened to migrants who travel to Italy in recent years.
METHODS: We analyzed the Italian refugees' data provided b

Mental health disorders (MHDs) among refugees has been recognized as a major public health issue. However, to date, there is limited evidence on the prevalence of MHDs among Rohingya refugees in Malaysia. This study aimed to examine the prevalence and associated factors of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Rohingya refugees in Malaysia. A total of 220 refugees were randomly selected to participate in this cross-sectional study, conducted from June 2019 to November 2019. Perceived social support, religious orient

ARTICLE HISTORY: Following the refugee crisis in Lebanon, the on-going inflow of Syrian refugees presented new challenges to optimal immunization coverage for all the children living in the country. Healthcare facilities have been overburdened during this period and the country witnessed outbreaks of many infectious diseases. Thus, the evaluation of vaccine compliance for mandatory and non-mandatory vaccines as well as the factors affecting the vaccination rate among Lebanese residents and Syrian refugees is fundamental.
BACKGROUND: Since 2012, Lebanon has hosted around 1.2 million Syrian ref

Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) are now no longer public health problems in the Republic of Korea (South Korea), but their status are unavailable in the residents of North Korea (NK) despite the expectation of large scale traffic and future reunification of the Korean Peninsula. A total of 20 female refugees from NK who had been admitted to the Division of Gastroenterology, Dankook University Hospital, were subjected in this study. Among them, 15 refugees were examined by the colonoscopy and 10 ones were examined with the stool examination (formalin-ether sedimentation). Both diagnostic m

Approximately one-third of people who have obtained refugee status live in high-income countries. Over recent years, the number of refugees has been increasing, and there are questions on how many of them need mental health care and which type of interventions are beneficial. Meta-analyses showed highly variable rates of mental disorders in adult refugees. This variability is likely to reflect both real differences between groups and contexts, and methodological inconsistencies across studies. Overall prevalence rates after resettlement are similar to those in host populations. Only post-traum

Increasing numbers of refugees from Burma (Myanmar) are resettling in Western countries. We performed a retrospective study of 156 Burmese refugees at an Australian teaching hospital. Of those tested, Helicobacter pylori infection affected 80%, latent tuberculosis 70%, vitamin D deficiency 37%, and strongyloidiasis 26%. Treating these diseases can prevent long-term illness.
