Risk factor ranking of retinopathy of prematurity using classification and regression tree analysis.

PURPOSE: Numerous risk factors for ROP have been identified, with gestational age and birth weight being the most established. Ongoing improvements in neonatal care may change the critical thresholds for these factors associated with ROP development. We applied a classification and regression tree (CART) analysis to predict the likelihood of developing ROP using a contemporary database. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1296 premature infants who completed ROP screening by pediatric ophthalmologists from a children's hospital. Relevant infant and maternal parameters were obtained f

Predictors of Non-union in Subtrochanteric Femur Fractures: A Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis.

Over the last 20 years, the role of adjuvant pharmacotherapy in optimising outcome in rehabilitation programmes for alcohol-dependent patients has become increasingly evident. New avenues for rational drug treatment have arisen from better understanding of the neurobiological substrates of alcohol dependence, including adaptive changes in amino acid neurotransmitter systems, stimulation of dopamine and opioid peptide systems, and, possibly, changes in serotonergic activity. Disulfiram, naltrexone and acamprosate are currently the only treatments approved for the management of alcohol dependenc

Machine learning vs. traditional regression analysis for fluid overload prediction in the ICU.

Fluid overload, while common in the ICU and associated with serious sequelae, is hard to predict and may be influenced by ICU medication use. Machine learning (ML) approaches may offer advantages over traditional regression techniques to predict it. We compared the ability of traditional regression techniques and different ML-based modeling approaches to identify clinically meaningful fluid overload predictors. This was a retrospective, observational cohort study of adult patients admitted to an ICU ≥ 72 h between 10/1/2015 and 10/31/2020 with available fluid balance data. Models to predict fl

Uncertainty-aware body composition analysis with deep regression ensembles on UK Biobank MRI.

Along with rich health-related metadata, medical images have been acquired for over 40,000 male and female UK Biobank participants, aged 44-82, since 2014. Phenotypes derived from these images, such as measurements of body composition from MRI, can reveal new links between genetics, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic conditions. In this work, six measurements of body composition and adipose tissues were automatically estimated by image-based, deep regression with ResNet50 neural networks from neck-to-knee body MRI. Despite the potential for high speed and accuracy, these networks produce no

An Exploration of Spiritual Well-being Among Homeless People: A Hierarchical Regression Analysis.

This study explored homeless people's (N = 164) spiritual well-being (SWB) in relation to race, mental illness, physical disease, resilience, and trait mindfulness. The results of hierarchical regression analysis revealed that variables of race (p = 0.003), mental illness (p = 0.04), resilience (p < 0.001) and trait mindfulness (p < 0.001) contributed to participants' SWB. These findings were critical to research related to homelessness and service provisions in finding that homeless people with certain backgrounds (e.g., mental illness) might have lower SWB than their counterparts. This resea
