Distribution and genetic diversity of Blastocystis subtypes in various mammal and bird species in northeastern China.

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is one of the most common intestinal parasites in humans and animals worldwide. At least 17 subtypes have been iden … infection rate of Blastocystis than mammals (3.8%). Blastocystis was found in seven mammal species, reindeer (6.7%), sika deer (14.6%), racoon dogs (7.5%), Arctic foxes (1.9%), dogs (2.9%), rats (3.7%) and rabbits (3.3%), as well as three bird species, pigeons (2.1%), chickens (13.0%) and red crowned cranes (14.0%). Eight subtypes were identified including …

[The spread of the principal socially important parasitic disease on the territory of the Chukot Autonomous Okrug (ChAO)].

The paper provides the examination findings of helminthiases in the population of the town of Anadyr, the settlements of Kanchalan, Krasneno, and in the reindeer-breeding teams of the Anadyr District, CAD. The children infected with enterobiasis were shown to amount to 15.1 to 22.9%, diphyllobothriasis was detected in 12.9 - 33.7% of the examinees. Single cases of ascariasis were revealed. Analysis of 232 cases with echinococcosis demonstrates that the infection is prevalent over the whole Chukotka territory. Infection with Echinococcus multilocularis is more common in the indigenous populatio…

Confirming Hypoderma tarandi (Diptera: Oestridae) human ophthalmomyiasis by larval DNA barcoding.

DNA barcoding is a practical tool for species identification, when morphological classification of an organism is difficult. Herein we describe the utilisation of this technique in a case of ophthalmomyiasis interna. A 12-year-old boy was infested during a summer holiday in northern Norway, while visiting an area populated with reindeer. Following medical examination, a Diptera larva was surgically removed from the boy's eye and tentatively identified from its morphological traits as Hypoderma tarandi (L.) (Diptera: Oestridae). Ultimately, DNA barcoding confirmed this impression. The larval cy…

[Development of the larvae inside the body of the itch mites Sarcoptes scabiei (L.) (Sarcoptidae) and the ontogenetic level of eclosion in mites of the order Acariformes].

Several larvae-containing females of Sarcoptes have been found in skin biopsy of heavily infected Rangifer tarandas L. A. viviparity hypothesis is disproved. The larvae in the body of egg-containing dead females of the human Sarcoptes were obtained by incubation in the suspended water drop. Embryogenesis types as well as eclosion stage in Acariformes are discussed. The term "postmortal pregnancy" is proposed.

Cephenemyia ulrichii Brauer 1862, in Swedish moose.

Larvae of Cephenemyia (Latreille 1818), the moose bot fly (Diptera; Oestridae) are parasites of the nose and pharynx in cervidae. In Europe 4 species of Cephenemyia are reported, C. trompe (Modeer 1786) in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus L), C. stimulator (Clark 1815) in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L), C. auribarbis (Meigen 1824) in red deer (Cervus elaphus L) and fallow deer (Dama dama L), and C. ulrichii, Brauer 1862, in moose (Alces alces L) (Zumpt 1965, Grunin 1966). Of these, C. trompe is known from northern Scandinavia (Zumpt 1965, Grunin 1966), C. stimulator is reported from Denm…

Ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior.

Ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior (OIP) means infection of the posterior part of the eye with the larvae of flies. Few cases have been reported in which the larvae have been removed from the eye and the visual acuity preserved. We report four cases of OIP with living larva in the vitreous cavity. The larvae produced severe uveitis and were removed alive with vitrectomy and a procedure for removing foreign bodies. They were identified as first-stage reindeer warble fly larvae (Oedemagena tarandi). We also observed dead larva in the vitreous cavity of a patient who suffered severe uveitis in 19…

In vitro isolation and cultivation of a Babesia from an American woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou).

A Babesia species isolated from a captive caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) with clinical signs of babesiosis and a circulating parasitemia was cultured in vitro. Normal adult caribou erythrocytes supported the growth of the Babesia sp., as did erythrocytes from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Two basal media (M-199 and RPMI-1640) and a defined medium (HL-1) each supplemented with adult bovine serum were compared. The most favorable growth of the parasite occurred in HL-1 medium with 20% adult bovine serum. The morphology of this Babesia sp. isolate shared some characteristics wi

Cadmium, metallothionein and renal tubular toxicity.

Cadmium-induced nephrotoxicity develops at cadmium concentrations in the renal cortex of 10-300 micrograms/g wet weight. The actual concentration at which it develops depends on a number of factors, e.g., exposure route, chemical species of cadmium administered, rate of administration and simultaneous exposure to other metals. The role of these factors can be explained by a mechanism of cadmium nephrotoxicity in which both extracellular and intracellular metallothionein binding play an essential role. In reindeer used for human food, cadmium was shown to be bound to metallothionein-like protei…

Comparison of gross visual and microscopic assessment of four anatomic sites to monitor Besnoitia tarandi in barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus).

The objective of this study was to establish a standardized protocol to monitor Besnoitia tarandi prevalence and intensity in barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herds by: 1) calculating the relative sensitivity and specificity of the gross visual assessment of four anatomical sites compared with microscopic evaluation, and 2) determining which of four anatomical sampling sites was the most sensitive for detecting B. tarandi cysts by microscopy. Sampled tissues consisted of the conjunctiva of the left eye and skin sections from the rostrum, metatarsus, and thigh from 312 harvested caribo

Babesia odocoilei as a cause of mortality in captive cervids in Canada.

Nine cases of fatal infection with Babesia odocoilei were confirmed in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) and elk (Cervus canadensis) housed in zoological institutions located in southern Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba, Canada between 2013 and 2016. All animals died of a hemolytic crisis. Frequent postmortem findings were extensive hemorrhage, pigmenturia, and intrahepatic cholestasis. The described ante- and postmortem signs are consistent with those of previously reported cases in the United States. Diagnosis was confirmed in all cases by polymerase chain reaction performed on DNA extracte…

An integrative and multi-indicator approach for wildlife health applied to an endangered caribou herd.

Assessing wildlife health in remote regions requires a multi-faceted approach, which commonly involves convenient samplings and the need of identifying and targeting relevant and informative indicators. We applied a novel wildlife health framework and critically assessed the value of different indicators for understanding the health status and trends of an endangered tundra caribou population. Samples and data from the Dolphin and Union caribou herd were obtained between 2015 and 2021, from community-based surveillance programs and from captured animals. We documented and categorized indicator

Erythema multiforme following Orf viral infection: a comprehensive review of the literature with a case report highlight.

Orf, also known as ecthyma contagiosum, is a highly contagious zoonotic infection linked to direct contact with infected sheep, goats, or reindeer, posing a significant risk to farmers, veterinarians, shepherds, and butchers. This study presents a case of a 41-year-old female who developed Orf, complicated by the rare occurrence of erythema multiforme (EM), after handling sheep meat. The patient initially presented with a progressive, painful skin eruption on the left dorsum of the little finger, which subsequently worsened and led to the development of generalized painful and itchy skin lesio…
