In the short term, the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with duodenal ulcer (DU) is deemed to be clearly effective; the long-term effectiveness apparently depends on the H. pylori reinfection rate. We conducted the present study to investigate the rates of H. pylori reinfection and DU recurrence in 45 patients previously cured of DU in whom H. pylori had been eradicated. These patients underwent gastroscopy and tests for H. pylori at least 1 year after eradication. In a control group comprising 31 patients with DU who were not treated with H. pylori eradication regimen, the DU re

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reinfection rate of the gastric mucosa in patients previously cured of duodenal ulcers, following the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Only those remaining H. pylori-negative beyond 12 months of follow-up were studied, to minimize the potential inclusion of patients with H. pylori recrudescence.
METHODS: Patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcers who had been treated with triple therapy, resulting in documented eradication of H. pylori and cure of the ulcer for at least 4 years, were recalled and had their H. pylori status determined by the 14C-urea bre

A 50-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia experienced two episodes of community-acquired legionnaires' disease. For determining whether this was the result of relapse or reinfection, Legionella pneumophila strains, cultured from sputum specimens and his home water supply, were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Analysis of the restriction patterns and the clinical data indicated that the second disease period was most likely the result of reinfection. We conclude that after diagnosis of community-acquired legionnaires' disease in an immunocompromised patient, culturin

From September 1988 to May 1991, 160 orthotopic liver transplantations were performed in our hospital. Twenty-four patients had end-stage cirrhosis caused by chronic non-A, non-B hepatitis. Antibodies against hepatitis C virus were documented before and after orthotopic liver transplantation in 13 patients. Studies using the polymerase chain reaction demonstrated hepatitis C virus RNA in the serum and liver tissue of 17 patients (10 of whom tested positive for hepatitis C virus antibodies) before orthotopic liver transplantation. Tissue samples taken from liver grafts during the operation were

To clarify the existence of reinfection in children bearing an established Ascaris lumbricoides infection, the authors evaluated the weight and the length of worms collected from ten cases of ascaridiasis. The worm burden was greater than 27 worms in nine cases. In seven cases the weight and the length of worms showed little variation, with unimodal distribution of values, suggesting that all the worms in each case belong to the same population, originated from a single brood infection or from successive infections over small time intervals. In three cases there was great variation in worm siz

The report concerns a case of an obvious varicella reinfection during pregnancy and the course of varicella-IgG and -IgM titers, respectively. By means of early diagnosis with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa) and immediate application of a high - titered commercial varicella-zoster immunoglobuline, an infection of the foetus was probably prevented.

OBJECTIVES: Predisposition to reinfection is characterized by certain individuals repeatedly acquiring infection at higher rates than others in the population despite treatment. As endemic regions approach low prevalence levels, such individuals will act as reservoirs of infection and contribute to sustaining transmission cycles in communities. This study investigated evidence for individual-level predisposition to Ascaris lumbricoides infections using longitudinal data from the Geshiyaro project in southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: Longitudinal parasitological data collected over 7 years were anal

Congenital cytomegalovirus infections (cCMV) are an important cause of childhood neurodevelopmental deficits. Most cCMV are the result of maternal non-primary infections during pregnancy, which can be due to reactivation or reinfection. To identify the rate of CMV reinfection during pregnancy and its risk factors. We performed a secondary analysis of CMV seropositive participants from two prospective cohort studies in Quebec, Canada. Antibody responses to four strain-specific CMV epitopes located in glycoproteins B and H were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. CMV reinfection was d

We report an asymptomatic child with heterotaxy syndrome who had recurrent positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction testing. An aberrant lymphocyte population expressing CD19, CD16, and CD56 was identified; its phenotyping revealing atypical NK cells. This subset's role in protection from severe disease or in reinfection cannot be ascertained.

OBJECTIVES: The actual frequency and the risk factors of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection is still a matter of intense scientific discussion. In this case series, we report three elite athletes who underwent COVID-19 reinfection with a short time frame.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: As a part of contact tracing, three speed skaters (22-, 24-, and 29-year-old males) were found to be SARS-CoV-2 positive by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Later on, only one of the athletes experienced mild symptoms, such as fatigue, loss of smell and taste and subfebrility, while the other two athletes were asymptomatic. Fol

Currently, psoriasis patients are advised to follow their standard therapeutic regimen, and are advised to be vaccinated against Covid-19. However, the data about the antibody responses, induced by the various kinds of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in psoriasis patients who require systemic immunosuppressive treatment is scant. In this case report, we describe antibody responses induced by COVID-19 vaccine, in a 26-year-old male patient with psoriasis being treated with anti-TNF biotherapy, adalimumab biosimilar every two weeks. The patient was vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the national prot

COVID-19 pneumonia has invaded the world and continues to expand. The current evidence of the immune system reaction to this viral pneumonia shows that the post-infectious immunity against the virus may be temporary, and the virus may reinfect the patients after healing from the previous one. Here is presented a 55-year-old female patient, as a known case of Hodgkin lymphoma, diagnosed with COVID-19 reinfection during 40 days. Such evidence may be helpful in further understanding the immunology of the disease.

This report highlights the case of a patient with X-linked agammaglobulinaemia (XLA) and resultant bronchiectasis who was discharged from hospital after recovering from real-time reverse transcriptase-PCR positive COVID-19 infection having had a subsequent negative swab and resolution of symptoms, but was readmitted 3 weeks later with recrudescent symptoms and a further positive swab. Although there are reports of COVID-19 infection in XLA, for the first time we report a case of possible reinfection. Lessons learnt from this case include the potential for reinfection of COVID-19 in a patient w

There is hardly any report of reinfection due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in medical professionals from Nepal. We report a case of a 32-year-old doctor with COVID-19 reinfection. Symptoms during the first infection were mild. After one month, he was reinfected and developed diarrhea as well as a continuous high fever. His d-dimer and ferritin were much increased. Computed tomography chest showed bilateral lymph nodes, minimal pleural effusion, and scattered linear fibrosis. After discharge, his depression and myalgia persisted for one month. During reinfection, his symptoms were mor

While praziquantel mass drug administration is currently the most widely used method in the control of human schistosomiasis, it does not prevent subsequent reinfection hence persistent transmission. Towards schistosomiasis elimination, understanding the reinfection rate is crucial in planning for the future interventions. However, there is scarcity of information on the global reinfection rate of schistosomiasis. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at summarizing studies that estimated the reinfection rate of human schistosomiasis. Three data bases (PubMed, Hinari and Google Schola

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is an understudied infection and many aspects of viral transmission and clinical course remain unclear. With over 17000 EVD survivors in West Africa, the World Health Organization has focused its strategy on managing survivors and the risk of re-emergence of outbreaks posed by persistence of the virus during convalescence. Sexual transmission from survivors has also been documented following the 2014 epidemic and there are documented cases of survivors readmitted to hospital with 'recurrence' of EVD symptoms. In addition to persistence of virus in survivors, there is

Many pathogens make use of antigenic variation as a way to evade the host immune response. A key mechanism for immune evasion and persistent infection by the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, is antigenic variation of the VlsE surface protein. Recombination results in changes in the VlsE surface protein that prevent recognition by VlsE-specific antibodies in the infected host. Despite the presence of a substantial number of additional proteins residing on the bacterial surface, VlsE is the only known antigen that exhibits ongoing variation of its surface epitopes. This suggests th

BACKGROUND: The risk of progression to active tuberculosis is greatest in the several years following initial infection. The extent to which latent tuberculosis infection reduces the risk of progressive disease following reexposure and reinfection is not known. Indirect estimates from population models have been highly variable.
METHODS: We reviewed prospective cohort studies of persons exposed to individuals with infectious tuberculosis that were published prior to the widespread treatment of latent tuberculosis to estimate the incidence of tuberculosis among individuals with latent tubercul
