Historical overview and update on relapsing fever group Borrelia in Latin America.

Relapsing fever group Borrelia (RFGB) are motile spirochetes transmitted to mammalian or avian hosts through the bite of hematophagous arthropods, such as soft ticks (Argasidae), hard ticks (Ixodidae) and the human clothing lice. RFGB can infect pets such as dogs and cats, as well as birds, cattle and humans. Borrelia recurrentis, B. anserina and B. theileri are considered to have worldwide distribution, affecting humans, domestic birds and ruminants, respectively. Borrelia spp. associated with soft ticks are transmitted mainly by Ornithodoros ticks and thrive in endemic foci in tropical and s

Diversity and distribution of the tick-borne relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia turicatae.

Borrelia turicatae is a causative agent of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) in the subtropics and tropics of the United States and Latin America. Historically, B. turicatae was thought to be maintained in enzootic cycles in rural areas. However, there is growing evidence that suggests the pathogen has established endemic foci in densely populated regions of Texas. With the growth of homelessness in the state and human activity in city parks, it was important to implement field collection efforts to identify areas where B. turicatae and its vector circulate. Between 2017 and 2020 we collected

An outbreak of relapsing fever unmasked by microbial paleoserology, 16th century, France.

OBJECTIVES: Depicting past epidemics currently relies on DNA-based detection of pathogens, an approach limited to pathogens with well-preserved DNA sequences. We used paleoserology as a complementary approach detecting specific antibodies under a mini line-blot format including positive and negative control antigens. METHODS: Mini line blot assay incorporated skim milk as negative control, Staphylococcus aureus as positive control, and antigens prepared from lice-borne pathogens Rickettsia prowazekii, Borrelia recurrentis, Bartonella quintana, and Yersinia pestis. Paleoserums were extracted f

[Relapsing fever after travelling in the tropics; a story with a twist].

BACKGROUND: Relapsing fever is an infectious disease caused by Spirochaetes. The presentation is characterised by recurrent episodes of fever. CASE DESCRIPTION: At the end of her trip through South Africa and Botswana, a 54-year-old woman had symptoms of fever and dry cough. Back in the Netherlands, physical examination at the emergency department did not reveal any abnormalities besides fever. Laboratory investigation found thrombocytopenia and elevated infection markers. Thick blood smear revealed the presence of Spirochaetes. Following a working diagnosis of 'relapsing fever', the patient

Louse-borne relapsing fever in a refugee from Somalia arriving in Belgium.

We report a case of louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) in a refugee from Somalia who had arrived in Belgium a few days earlier. He complained of myalgia and secondarily presented fever. Blood smears revealed spirochetes later identified as Borrelia recurrentis. LBRF should be considered in countries hosting refugees, particularly those who transit through endemic regions.

Louse-borne relapsing fever in Finland in two asylum seekers from Somalia.

We report two cases of louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) in young Somali asylum seekers having recently arrived to Finland. They had sought medical attention for a febrile illness. Blood smears were examined for suspected malaria, but instead, spirochete shaped bacteria were observed. The bacteria were confirmed as Borrelia recurrentis by PCR and sequencing. The patients survived, but their treatment was complicated by Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. We conclude that LBRF must be considered as a diagnostic option in febrile refugees also in the northernmost parts of Europe.

Fever of unknown origin in a patient with red ears: relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune disease that affects cartilage and multiple organ system. We describe a case of RP presenting with fever, conjunctivitis and inflammatory signs of the right knee. Infectious and neoplastic diseases were excluded by imaging and laboratory examinations. After 17 days of admission the patient reported coughing and odynophagia, and, a physical examination showed red ears. Otorhinolaryngological examination demonstrated arytenoid chondritis. RP was diagnosed based on four McAdam's criteria. The patient was medicated with oral prednisone, and a posi

The epidemiology of tick-borne relapsing fever in Iran during 1997-2006.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne relapsing fever is an acute febrile and endemic disease in Iran. For many reasons, the incidence of disease is on decrease, however tick-borne relapsing fever is still a health issue in the rural areas for travelers. This study was carried out during 1997-2006 to investigate the tick-borne relapsing fever in Iran. METHODS: Based on a cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive study in all the provinces, the residents in the endemic areas who were febrile and suspicious to tick-borne relapsing fever were enrolled in the study. Tick-borne relapsing fever is a notifiab

Louse-borne relapsing fever in Ethiopian children: experience of a rural hospital.

We describe the epidemiological and clinical aspects of louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) in a series of children attending in a rural hospital in Ethiopia during 1997-2007. From a total of 249 cases of LBRF, 154 (61.4%) were children (<15 years). The most frequent symptoms were: fever, headache, dizziness and musculoskeletal pains. The overall case fatality rate was 2.4 (10% for patients <1.1 years; 3.4% for 1.1 to 4.0 years; and 0% >4.0 years [P = 0.05]). The mortality in children was less than in adults (13.2%) (P = 0.003).

Does tick-borne relapsing fever have an animal reservoir in East Africa?

Tick-borne relapsing fevers (TBRF) are caused by infection with Borrelia spirochetes and transmitted to humans by ticks. All except East African TBRF, caused by Borrelia duttonii, are known zoonoses. This widespread, endemic and pathogenic infection has only been found in humans and the Ornithodoros sp. soft tick vectors. We investigated the role of domestic animals as possible reservoirs of infection in a TBRF endemic region. Tick infestations in households and pigpens were investigated in the villages near Mvumi hospital in central Tanzania. Blood from chickens and pigs was examined by PCR a

Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction associated with ciprofloxacin administration for tick-borne relapsing fever.

A 14-year-old girl was seen at a community clinic with a chief complaint of abdominal pain and fevers and was treated with oral ciprofloxacin for presumed pyelonephritis. She became tachycardic and hypotensive after her first dose of antibiotic, and she developed disseminated intravascular coagulation. She was admitted to our hospital for presumed sepsis. Her outpatient peripheral blood smear was reviewed, revealing spirochetes consistent with Borrelia sp. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction to ciprofloxacin.

Tick-borne relapsing fever in the northwestern United States and southwestern Canada.

Records from 182 cases of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) were reviewed. In confirmed cases, there was febrile illness, and spirochetes were identified on peripheral blood preparations. In probable cases, there were clinical features of TBRF and either the same exposure as a confirmed case or serological (indirect fluorescent antibody test and western blotting [WB]) evidence of infection with Borrelia hermisii. Sera also were tested for antibody to Borrelia burgdorferi. We identified 133 confirmed and 49 probable cases of TBRF. A Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction was reported in 33 (54.1%) of 61 c

GlpQ: an antigen for serological discrimination between relapsing fever and Lyme borreliosis.

Tick-borne relapsing fever is caused by numerous Borrelia species maintained in nature by Ornithodoros tick-mammal cycles. Serological confirmation is based on either an immunofluorescence assay or an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using whole cells or sonicated Borrelia hermsii as the antigen. However, antigenic variability of this bacterium's outer surface proteins and antigens shared with the Lyme disease spirochete (B. burgdorferi), may cause both false-negative and false-positive results when testing sera of patients suspected to have either relapsing fever or Lyme disease. Association between specific plasmids and relapse in typhoid fever.

We studied isolates from 73 patients hospitalized with typhoid fever in Lima, Peru. Of these 73 patients, 11 (15%) suffered a clinical relapse, with fever and positive blood cultures, within 3 months of their original illness. Using plasmids as epidemiologic markers, we found that three patients who subsequently relapsed were initially infected with more than one strain of Salmonella typhi. There was a highly significant association between relapse and isolation of a strain containing either a 24- or a 38-kilobase plasmid at the time of the original infection; however, we were unable to show a

Molecular detection of relapsing fever Borrelia puertoricensis in migratory Mexican free-tailed bats.

UNLABELLED: Bats have been increasingly recognized to host relapsing fever borreliae as well as borreliae that form novel clades adjacent to the Lyme borreliosis group. However, the genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of bat-borne borreliae remain poorly understood, in part because most work to date has focused on bats in the tropics. Fewer bat-borne Borrelia surveys have been conducted in temperate zones, where many bats undertake seasonal migrations that may facilitate pathogen dispersal. We surveyed blood from nearly 400 Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) during their sea
