Methods and tools used to assess patient experience with healthcare services in prisons: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Measures of patient experience of healthcare services are important to improving quality of care and health outcomes. In correctional facilities, healthcare is shaped by key features of the environment, including security constraints and uncertain lengths of stay. In this scoping review, we aimed to map the existing literature and identify knowledge gaps to inform efforts to implement and enhance measures of patient experience in correctional settings. METHODS: We conducted a search of health sciences databases and grey literature for original research articles on 6 December 2024.

Mapping Caregiver Needs' Assessment Tools for Family and Friend Caregivers: A Rapid Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Family and friend caregivers provide essential support across health and social care systems but remain inconsistently identified, assessed, and supported in routine practice. Although numerous caregiver needs' assessment instruments exist, many focus on burden, distress, or preparedness rather than explicitly eliciting caregiver-defined support needs, limiting their utility for care planning, care transitions, and system integration. METHODS: We conducted a rapid scoping review to identify and characterize caregiver needs' assessment tools developed for family and friend caregive

Thinking, Feeling, Choosing: How Affect Is Reflected in Prostate Cancer Treatment Decision Making-A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making (SDM) emphasizes informed, value-aligned choices, yet affect has not been a primary focus and is rarely addressed explicitly in cancer contexts. Among men with low-to intermediate-risk prostate cancer (LIRPC), active treatment and active surveillance each involve distinct affective challenges that may influence risk perception, decisional uncertainty, and treatment satisfaction. Despite prior work in affect and decision making literature, its integration into cancer contexts remains limited. AIMS: To address the gap, this study examined how affect, alongside

Prescriptive or Interpretive Regulation at the Frontlines of Care Work in the "Three Worlds" of Canada, Germany and Norway.

This paper examines the tension between macro level regulation and the rule breaking and rule following that happens at the workplace level. Using a comparative study of Canada, Norway, and Germany, the paper documents how long-term residential care work is regulated and organized differently depending on country, regional, and organizational contexts. We ask where each jurisdiction's staffing regulations fall on a prescription-interpretation continuum; we define prescription as a regulatory tendency to identify what to do and when and how to do it, and interpretation as a tendency to delineat

Parental overprotection increases sociotropy with gender specificity in parents and recipients.

BACKGROUND: There have been few studies which examined the developmental origins of cognitive vulnerability of depression. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of parental rearing on sociotropy and autonomy, the personality vulnerability factors in the cognitive theory of depression. METHODS: The subjects were 416 healthy subjects. Perceived parental rearing was assessed by the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), which has care and protection factors, and sociotropy and autonomy were assessed by the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale. RESULTS: In males, neither sociotropy nor au

Medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorders in correctional settings: an ethics review.

Opioid use disorders are a pressing health concern that disproportionately impacts the United States (U.S.) correctional population. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based standard of care for opioid use disorders. Despite its availability in the community, MAT and MAT medications (buprenorphine and methadone) are largely unavailable and/or inaccessible for the treatment of opioid use disorders in U.S. prisons and jails. Given that the ethical principles have served as justification for limiting access to MAT on "moral" grounds, this article examines the implications of curre

Empathetic Practice: The Struggle and Virtue of Empathizing with a Patient's Suffering.

In this article, our analysis of empathy in the clinical context hinges on the complexities of patients who are acutely suffering. Using a case concerning a heart transplant patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Alex, and his nurse, Joe, we investigate how empathy's phenomenological nebulousness can generate doubts about its virtue. Even when asking, "How are you, Alex?" Joe hates the question; it seems empty, silly. Cases like this show both that the enactment of empathy is sometimes challenging and that it can be reasonable to wonder if empathy is a virtue at all. Perhaps Alex's sufferin

A realist review of the contribution of person-centred cultures to the management of depression among older persons in nursing homes.

Background Person-centeredness is espoused in many national and international policies and standards and are viewed to inform cultures of care in nursing homes and influence mental health of older adults. In spite of this, studies have shown mixed results regarding the impacts of person-centred cultures on depression with outcomes depending on contexts and implementation approach. In addition, the prevalence of depression in nursing homes remains high. Objective This review aimed to understand how, why and in what contexts person-centred cultures, the expected cultures of care in nursing homes

Sociotropy, autonomy, and bulimic symptomatology.

OBJECTIVE: The cognitive-behavioral model of bulimia nervosa suggests that maladaptive cognitions are associated with the development and maintenance of bulimia nervosa. This study was conducted to evaluate (a) the relation between bulimic symptomatology and the cognitive-personality styles of sociotropy (reflecting themes of acceptance and approval) and autonomy (reflecting themes of independence and achievement), and (b) the specificity of the relation between these two cognitive-personality styles and bulimic versus depressive symptoms. METHOD: 105 undergraduate women were administered sel

Sociotropy-autonomy and situation-specific anxiety.

Sociotropy and autonomy are conceptualized as two personality dimensions that relate to individuals' vulnerability to anxiety and depression. Sociotropy is characterized as an excessive investment in interpersonal relationships, and autonomy is characterized as an excessive concern with independence as well as a lack of concern for others. The present study investigated the relationships between sociotropy-autonomy and trait anxiety associated with four types of situations, i.e., Social Evaluation, Physical Danger, Ambiguous Situation, and Daily Routine. 255 undergraduate students completed th

When physical activity becomes a personal choice: How psychological ownership in physical activity motivates sustained participation among college students.

College students' participation in physical activity is often unstable and interrupted. Existing research has mainly explained this through motivation, autonomy, or exercise identity, but has paid less attention to why individuals experience exercise as their own activity. This study introduces psychological ownership as a complementary perspective and examines whether it is associated with autonomous choice, personal investment, and self connection, and whether it is related to sustained exercise intention through agency and affective commitment. Study 1 (N = 350) showed that autonomous choic

Elevating LGBTQ+ Health: Principles and Practices for Affirmative Health Coaching.

LGBTQ+ populations experience persistent mental and physical health disparities driven by minority stress and structural inequities that increase their risk for chronic disease. Health coaching is well positioned to support behavior change in these populations; however, when not delivered in an affirming manner, coaching practices may replicate bias, undermine engagement, and limit effectiveness. We provide a framework for LGBTQ+ affirmative health coaching that integrates minority stress theory, self-determination theory, and health equity models to identify mechanisms through which structura

"I felt like I was missing 'me'": Long-term experiences of intrapersonal loss, grief, and change in adults with an acquired brain injury.

Experiences of loss and change following acquired brain injury (ABI) are frequent and multi-contextual, yet the long-term experiences of people with ABI are not well understood. This study explored the experiences of intrapersonal loss, grief and change in people with ABI, a decade after their injury. Twelve adults with ABI were interviewed 10-13 years post-injury. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, we identified four overarching themes: a dawning realization of the impact of injury; loss of personhood; loss and liminality; and learning to live with loss and grief. Our findings in

An End-of-Life Ethics Consult in the ICU: Who Has the Final Say-The Patient or the Family?

A 72-year-old man with metastatic pancreatic cancer was admitted to the ICU with increased oxygen demand and confusion, likely related to pulmonary metastases. In the presence of his son, the health care agent, and the team, the patient requested to be do not attempt resuscitation and do not intubate status before losing decision-making capacity. When the patient's brother and another son heard of the code status change, they insisted on a return to Full Code. Although the youngest son (the health care agent) was present for the patient's request to be do not attempt resuscitation/do not intub

[The development of autonomy among adolescents with Down syndrome based on the pedagogy of Paulo Freire].

Autonomy is a process that enables us to understand and act on the environment and on ourselves. During adolescence, transformations result in the development of autonomy. Adolescents with Down syndrome (ADS) have perceptual-cognitive limitations and few opportunities to acquire autonomy. The development of autonomy in an occupational therapy group, with dyads of ADS and their main caregivers was analyzed. The evaluation of the materials produced in the therapeutic process pointed to four categories of analysis: self-perception, perception of the other, shared experience and change of attitude

Men's Perceptions of Non-Cancer Related Lymphoedema: A Qualitative Diary Study.

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by lymphatic dysfunction, resulting in persistent swelling. Although men are significantly affected, their experiences, particularly regarding masculine identity, remain underexplored. This UK-based study examined how men live with non-cancer-related lymphoedema, drawing on hegemonic masculinity and the Health, Illness, Men, and Masculinities (HIMM) framework. A qualitative narrative inquiry was conducted with 12 men who completed solicited diaries over 2 weeks. Thematic and structural analyses identified one overarching theme-vulnerability-and two sub

Structural and psychosocial determinants of condom nonuse among people living with HIV: a qualitative approach.

This descriptive qualitative study analyzed the meanings attributed to condom use and nonuse among adults living with HIV who are receiving antiretroviral treatment in Mexico. Through in-depth interviews with forty-four adults, the narratives were situated from an ecological perspective, considering individual, relational, community, structural, and epidemiological factors. The findings show that the decision not to use condoms is mainly driven by subjective processes related to pleasure, perceptions of a partner's health, normalization of risk, and resignation in the face of the diagnosis. Associations Between Perceived Knowledge, Interprofessional Collaboration, Autonomy and the Frequency of Nursing Activities in Paediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) requires coordinated multidisciplinary care. Although registered nurses (RNs) play a critical role, evidence on factors associated with the frequency of ECMO-related nursing activities in paediatric settings remains limited. AIM: To examine associations between perceived ECMO knowledge, interprofessional collaboration, nursing autonomy and the frequency of ECMO-related nursing activities. Capacity and the exercise of patient autonomy.

Capacity, often linked with the exercise of patient autonomy, was considered again recently by the Court of Appeal in Thirumalesh Chellamal Hemachandran and Another v Sudiksha Thirumalesh (Deceased) (By her litigation friend, The Official Solicitor) and Others ([2024] EWCA Civ 896). This paper reviews that case and comments on it in the light of the two related key themes of capacity and patient autonomy. The paper concludes that only patients with capacity can exercise patient autonomy because a patient who lacks capacity cannot make a decision regarding their medical treatment.
