Remediation of developmental dyslexia: tackling a basic memory deficit.

Remediation studies of developmental dyslexia are extremely rare. We present a single case study of an 8-year-old German developmental dyslexic boy K.H. who is hypothesized to suffer from a severe memory problem, impeding the development of normal reading functions. The memory problem especially affects the storage and access to letter-sound associations. As a consequence, the boy was initially unable to accurately and quickly name most of the 26 letters of the alphabet. A multiple-baseline across-material design with a high-frequency errorless learning procedure was set up to improve letter-n

Efficacy of an audio-visual computerized remediation program in students with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: an audio-visual computerized remediation program in students with developmental dyslexia. AIM: to verify the efficacy of an audio-visual computerized remediation program in students with developmental dyslexia. The specific goals of this study involved the comparison of the linguistic-cognitive performance of students with developmental dyslexia with that of students considered good readers; to compare the results obtained in pre and post-testing situations of students with dyslexia who were and were not submitted to the program; and to compare the results obtained with the remedi

The stroop color-word interference test as an indicator of ADHD in poor readers.

The performance on the Stroop Color-Word Interference Test of 36 boys with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) was compared with performances of a matched control sample. The control group outperformed their counterparts on the control and interference conditions of the Stroop test, suggesting ADHD-specific executive and reading deficits. When individuals with both ADHD and reading disorders were excluded from the analysis, the authors found a significant difference between the ADHD group and the control group on the color-word test, indicating that poor reading skills may produce

Reexamination of sensory integration treatment: a combination of two efficacy studies.

Little empirical support exists for the application of sensory integration treatment (SIT) to assist children with learning problems. Treatment efficacy studies are expensive and difficult to carry out, and they have necessarily employed small samples that are inevitably heterogeneous. We have reanalyzed the efficacy of SIT by combining the data from one study involving 29 children in Alberta and a second study involving 67 children in Ontario. The results from each individual study, and now the results from the combined study, lead one to the conclusion that the therapeutic effect of SIT on c

Usability Testing an Educational Telemedicine Simulation: Description of Methods and Preliminary Findings.

Simulations are often used in medical education to practice developing skills in low-stakes situations. We created a telemedicine simulation for residents in obstetrics, gynaecology, and family medicine to teach best practices in telehealth care. We wrote a case of a patient with gestational hypertension that tested resident performance in eight published telehealth competencies. Given the project's complexity, we conducted a usability test before piloting. Combining several user testing methods standard to interface usability testing, we identified and remedied critical usability issues befor

Interventions for Primary School Children With Difficulties in Mathematics.

Difficulty with arithmetic is a common problem for children and adults, though there has been some work on the topic for a surprisingly long time. This chapter will review some of the research that has been done over the years on interventions with primary school children. Interventions can be of various levels of intensiveness, ranging from whole-class approaches that take account of individual differences through small-group and limited-time individual interventions to extended-time individual interventions. Interventions discussed here include those involving peer tuition and group collabor

Evaluation and treatment of students with difficulties passing the Step examinations.

PURPOSE: The author designed this retrospective case series study both to systematically examine characteristics of individuals referred for treatment after multiple failures on the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) Step 1 or 2 administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners and to evaluate treatment effectiveness in a uniform sample. METHOD: Six medical students referred to rehabilitation psychology met selection criteria. All students completed the requisite neuropsychological, academic, and psychological testing to identify cognitive and emotional strengths and w

Dyslexia-specific brain activation profile becomes normal following successful remedial training.

OBJECTIVES: To examine changes in the spatiotemporal brain activation profiles associated with successful completion of an intensive intervention program in individual dyslexic children. METHODS: The authors obtained magnetic source imaging scans during a pseudoword reading task from eight children (7 to 17 years old) before and after 80 hours of intensive remedial instruction. All children were initially diagnosed with dyslexia, marked by severe difficulties in word recognition and phonologic processing. Eight children who never experienced reading problems were also tested on two occasions

Tachistoscopic treatment of dyslexia changes the distribution of visual-spatial attention.

Twelve children with developmental dyslexia underwent a four-month treatment with tachistoscopic presentation of words, according to Bakker's methodology. One group received standard lateral presentation of words on a PC screen, while the other group received the same stimuli in random lateral position. The spatial distribution of visual attention was measured by means of the Form-Resolving Field (FRF; ), which was administered along with reading tests, before and after treatment. The FRF of children who received random presentation widened at -12.5 degrees on the left side, while the FRF in t

A comparison of remedial, failure, and successful secondary school students across self-perception and past and present school performance variables.

Three groups of Grades 9-10 adolescents were compared across a combination of self-perception and school performance variables (past and present). The three groups studied were (1) students in remedial math and English classes (Remedials), (2) unsuccessful regular-stream students failing three or more subjects (Failures), and (3) successful regular-stream students failing no more than one course (Controls). The sample of 96 students was predominantly female, and subjects were enrolled in a general nonuniversity preparatory program at a commercial high school in an inner-city working-class dist

Prognosis of ischemic stroke in childhood: a long-term follow-up study.

Little is known about long-term physical sequelae, cognitive functioning, and quality of life in children who have experienced ischemic stroke. Thirty-seven patients under 16 years of age were studied; the median interval after stroke was 7 years. CT-scans were reassessed to determine the type of infarction at baseline. Occurrences of death, of new cardiovascular events, and of seizures during follow-up were recorded. Surviving patients were invited for a follow-up examination, including physical check-up, global screening of cognition, and an inventory of subjective health perception. Only tw

Diagnosis and treatment of reading disabilities based on the component model of reading: an alternative to the discrepancy model of LD.

Currently, learning disabilities (LD) are diagnosed on the basis of the discrepancy between students' IQ and reading achievement scores. Students diagnosed with LD often receive remedial instruction in resource rooms. The available evidence suggests that the educational policy based on this discrepancy model has not yielded satisfactory results. This has led researchers to try other paradigms, such as the component model and response to intervention, for dealing with children with reading disabilities. The component model of reading (CMR) described in the present article identifies the reading

Premorbid and postmorbid school functioning in bipolar adolescents: description and suggested academic interventions.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to describe and evaluate the manner in which changes in school functioning are associated with bipolar affective disorder (BAD) in adolescence. METHOD: Pre- and post-illness onset school functioning data were collected from a sample of 44 adolescents with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of BAD. A variety of assessment measures were used, including personal interview, a review of school history and formal academic testing. RESULTS: Our findings reveal an overall profile of generally good to excellent premorbid school functioning in most adolescent onset bipolar patien

Effective literacy instruction for adults with specific learning disabilities: implications for adult educators.

Adults with learning disabilities (LD) attending adult basic education, GED programs, or community colleges are among the lowest performers on measures of literacy. For example, on multiple measures of reading comprehension, adults with LD had a mean reading score at the third grade level, whereas adults without LD read at the fifth grade level. In addition, large numbers of adults perform at the lowest skill levels on quantitative tasks. Clearly, significant instructional challenges exist for adults who struggle with literacy issues, and those challenges can be greater for adults with LD. In

Cognitive remediation for schizophrenia: it is even more complicated.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Attempts to remediate the cognitive difficulties of people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia have shown efficacy; however, existing treatment studies display huge variation, frustrating efforts to determine how best to apply this treatment tool. This review summarizes findings of induced cognitive change in schizophrenia, with reference to the remediation method, the presence of accompanying treatment(s), how cognitive change generalizes and its value. RECENT FINDINGS: Although there is strong evidence that cognitive change can be induced in schizophrenia, there is little e

Early reading instruction for children with reading difficulties: meeting the needs of diverse learners.

Several multiple-probe-across-participants design studies were employed to evaluate the effectiveness of a supplemental tutoring intervention using Read Well (Sprick, Howard, & Fidanque, 1998-2000). In Year 1, we conducted two studies with 7 first-, second-, and third-grade children (1 girl and 6 boys), who were classified as having learning disabilities, having attention-deficit disorder, or being English language learners and were identified by their teachers as poor readers. The results of the two studies indicated that 3 of the 5 children who received Read Well instruction showed improveme

Contributions of magnetic source imaging to the understanding of dyslexia.

The problem in dyslexia is difficulty learning how the printed word maps onto spoken language. Magnetic Source Imaging protocols were used in three studies. The first study with dyslexic children showed greater activity in the right temporoparietal region. The second study showed the aberrant neural circuit was present in initial stages of reading acquisition. The third study demonstrated that the aberrant profile could be normalized following intensive instruction. These findings suggest that dyslexia represents a functional deficit in the neural circuit that mediates the conversion of print

Remediation of alexia without agraphia: a case study.

Following a left temporoparietal-occipital haemorrhage and surgery, a 43-year-old, right-handed male exhibited alexia without agraphia. A remediation programme consisted of training in head turning to compensate for a right visual field defect, letter-by-letter reading aloud and covertly, drill with flash-cards to improve word recognition and practice in naming objects to improve dysnomia. The patient's reading improved markedly over a 6-week period and he was able to resume work as a respiratory therapy supervisor. A post-morbid depression resolved concomitantly with the patient's return to w
