Multiscale Water Balance Analysis and Water Network Resilience Optimization in the Yellow River Basin.

As a core region for ecological security, food production, and energy supply in China, the hydrological cycle of the Yellow River Basin is being profoundly altered by climate change and intensive human activities, leading to growing systemic water scarcity and increasingly heterogeneous hydrological processes. However, the lack of long-term and high-resolution hydrological data has constrained the accurate characterization of multilayer water exchange processes among the atmosphere, surface water, and groundwater at the basin scale, thereby limiting the development of sustainable water resourc

BGSC-Net: Boundary-guided semantic compensation network for remote sensing image segmentation.

Deep learning has recently made remarkable progress in remote sensing image segmentation, with hybrid architectures that integrate convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Transformers emerging as a promising solution, particularly for high-resolution imagery. However, challenges remain in complex remote sensing scenes, particularly in capturing detailed boundary structures and small-scale targets. One key limitation lies in the suboptimal cross-level feature fusion within the encoder, resulting in semantic misalignment that hinders the precise segmentation of small objects and fine structural

Improvement in vegetation ecological quality and its driving factors in China over 2001-2024.

Against the backdrop of China's ecological civilization and carbon-neutrality goals, it is essential to clarify how vegetation ecological quality index (EQI) has changed and what drives it. Based on remote sensing products, this study reveals that China's EQI increased significantly at a rate of 0.106 yr-1 during 2001-2024, corresponding to an overall increase of approximately 9%. Unlike previous studies that focused on normalized difference vegetation index or net primary productivity and considered only climate and land use change, this study explicitly incorporates atmospheric CO2 and nitro

An AI-Driven Multimodal Sensing Framework Integrating UAV Imagery and Environmental Sensors for Intelligent Farmland Monitoring.

The utilization of multi-source sensing data to achieve intelligent perception and refined management of farmland has become a vital research direction in modern agriculture. However, traditional inspection approaches based solely on visual information are highly susceptible to illumination variations, occlusion, and background interference, which makes stable pest detection and accurate crop growth assessment difficult to achieve. To address these problems, we propose a multimodal target perception network for intelligent farmland inspection. By integrating UAV imagery, ground environmental s

Leveraging cloud-based SAR remote sensing and GNOME numerical simulation for modeling oil spill trajectory in the Black Sea.

On December 15, 2024, a severe storm in the southern Kerch Strait led to the sinking of the Russian tanker Volgoneft-212 and the grounding of Volgoneft-239, resulting in a catastrophic oil spill into the marine ecosystem. The present investigation utilizes the GNOME model to examine the role of wind, currents, diffusion, seawater temperature, and salinity in determining the trajectory and fate of the oil spill at Kerch Strait and the adjoining Black Sea. The spill was simulated as a continuous release of 5000 tons of oil over five days at the southern mouth of the Kerch Strait. A 15-day model

Assessing COVID-19 lockdown effects on coastal water quality in a strongly impacted tourist destination using Sentinel-2 multispectral data.

Remote sensing data from satellite platforms were the only available source of information for environmental studies during the COVID-19 lockdown in many regions of the world. We analyzed the spatial variability of representative water indices derived from the Sentinel-2 sensor across six coastal land cover classes along a tourist destination on the North Pacific coast of Mexico. A comparative assessment was conducted between the 2020 lockdown period and the same holiday season in 2019, 2020, and 2022, evaluating the spatial distribution of water indices per coastal class. Principal coordinate

Spatiotemporal characteristics of atmospheric CO2 under the influence of different industrial emission sources using lidar remote sensing in Nanping, China.

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations are predominantly regulated by multiple emission sources, with industrial emissions representing a critical anthropogenic driver that significantly influences temporal and spatial heterogeneity in regional CO2 patterns. This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of atmospheric CO2 in Pucheng and Nanping industrial parks, Nanping City, by conducting field experiments using two coherent differential absorption lidars from 1 August to 31 October 2024. Results showed that the spatial distributions of CO2 emissions within a 3 km radius were mapped, and th

A field study using different technologies to detect calving at a large-scale hungarian dairy farm.

The objective of this study was to investigate three different calving detection systems in order to assess and compare their efficiency. The study was conducted at a large-scale dairy farm involving 54 Holstein-Friesian dairy cows and heifers. Animals were fitted with multiple devices: a rumination measuring device (Ruminact® (RA)), an intravaginal thermometer (Vel'Phone® (VP)) and a tail movement sensor (Moocall® (MC)) 5 to 7 days before expected calving and were removed after parturition. RA detects rumination time (RT) and calculates it in 2-hr intervals. VP detects a decrease in vaginal t

Remote sensing of emissions from in-use small engine marine vessels.

This paper reports the first use of a remote sensing device to measure emissions from in-use marine vessels. Emissions from 307 small marine vessels were measured as they passed through the Hiram M. Chittenden locks near Seattle, WA. Of these vessels, 89 were matched to state registration information to allow for further analysis of emissions vs model year, fuel type, and engine type. Emission factors are reported for CO, HC, and NOx in grams of pollutant per kilogram of fuel. The measured emission factors generally agreed with those derived from laboratory studies. HC emissions are disproport

Fine-scale mangrove species monitoring and ecological threshold assessment for coastal management in Quanzhou Bay, China.

Reliable species-level monitoring of mangrove ecosystems is increasingly required for environmental assessment and regulatory decision-making, yet a methodological gap persists between remote sensing outputs and ecological risk evaluation. This study proposes an integrated assessment framework that links multi-sensor satellite imagery with ecological niche modeling to support precision monitoring and threshold-based management. Using Sentinel-2 and SPOT-6 data combined with an object-based U-Net model, we achieved high species-level classification accuracy (OA = 89.02%, Kappa = 0.82) for appro

Pandemic impacts on protected rainforests and rural communities with variable health and livelihood support in West Kalimantan, Indonesia: a mixed-methods approach combining household surveys and remote sensing.

BACKGROUND: Community support programmes can simultaneously improve human and ecosystem health. However, whether and how supported communities maintain these sustainable trajectories during major disruptions remains unclear. We used a mixed-methods approach to document how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted rural communities and protected rainforests in West Kalimantan. METHODS: We surveyed 1016 households across six villages with non-governmental organisation (NGO)-affiliated health-livelihood support and four nearby unaffiliated villages to understand their pandemic experiences and logging acti

Geospatial-based surveillance of malaria risk in Dar es Salaam using a hybrid 3DCNN + LSTM and CA model.

Malaria remains a significant public health burden in tropical and subtropical regions, where the efficient identification and prediction of risk areas remain challenging. Conventional field surveys used to map Anopheles breeding sites are costly, time consuming and often incomplete. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a geospatially integrated surveillance framework that can accurately map malaria risk and forecast future risk dynamics to support targeted control efforts. A geospatial hybrid modelling framework was developed by integrating multi-source remote sensing, malaria, and climate

Remote Tongue-Based Control of a Wheelchair Mounted Assistive Robotic Manipulator and the Effect of Adaptive Semi-Automation.

Increasing the independence of individuals with tetraplegia is a challenging task. One potential solution is to allow for use of an assistive robotic manipulator (ARM), when solving tasks in personal and remote space. There is a lack in available control interfaces that are suitable for severely disabled individuals. The aim of this paper is twofold: to allow for remote tongue-based control of an ARM and, to study the effect of semi-automation when compared with full manual control of an ARM. Ten non-disabled individuals participated in a two-day experiment where they were asked to drive a whe

[Application of multi-rotor UAV-borne flux observation system in carbon dioxide flux monitoring of reed wetland].

The accurate monitoring of ecosystem carbon flux is the key to scientific assessment of terrestrial carbon sequestration. There is a big challenge for the tower-based eddy covariance system to cover multiple ecosystem types in a region. We introduced a multi-rotor UAV-borne flux observation system, and evaluated its observational accuracy based on the comparison of carbon flux between the multi-rotor UAV-borne flux observation system and the tower-based eddy covariance system within an experiment conducted in the reed wetland of the Liaohe Delta from July 27 to 29, 2023. The results showed tha

How does air quality reflect the land cover changes: remote sensing approach using Sentinel data.

Significant environmental challenges, such as urban and industrial expansion, alongside vegetation preservation, directly influence the concentrations of critical air pollutants and greenhouse gases in cities and their surroundings. The urban development and expansion process is aptly captured by classifying land use and land cover (LULC). We aimed to analyze LULC changes in an Andean area, Ecuador, and to reveal the relations of LULC classes with three air pollutants ozone ( O 3 ), nitrogen dioxide ( N O 2 ), and sulfur dioxide ( S O 2 ), using remote sensing datasets (Sentinel-5P - Sent
