HIV/AIDS in the shadows of reproductive health interventions.

In December 1999, the Tanzanian president declared HIV/AIDS a national disaster. By the time the National Policy on HIV/AIDS was released in 2001, an estimated 750,000 women of reproductive age were infected. Yet in spite of the impact of HIV on reproductive health, AIDS and reproductive health programmes are still thought of and implemented through separate channels, to the detriment of both. However, although AIDS remains in the shadows of reproductive health interventions, the lack of AIDS talk does not lessen the impact of the disease on people's lives. During the course of my participant

Effects of styrene on the reproductive health of women: a review.

Styrene has been shown to cross the placenta. Studies in animals suggest that styrene and styrene oxide have embryotoxic or fetotoxic effects early in pregnancy, but there is no evidence with regard to teratogenicity. This paper is a review of epidemiological investigations on the effects of occupational exposure to styrene on the reproductive health of women. The results of these studies are contradictory. Some early reports suggested that exposure to styrene induces menstrual disturbances, spontaneous abortions and congenital malformations. In more recent studies, no risk was observed among

Occupational hazards to reproduction and health in anaesthetists and paediatricians.

A mail questionnaire was sent to Finnish anaesthetists and paediatricians to evaluate the risks of reproductive, teratogenic and health complications related to the professions. The incidence of diagnosed spontaneous miscarriages in anaesthetists' families was 10.2% of all pregnancies and it was 13.2% in paediatricians' families. Smoking seemed to increase markedly the incidence of spontaneous miscarriages, which was 22.9% in smoking female anaesthetists and 17.2% in smoking female paediatricians. The gestation times in cases of both full-term pregnancies and miscarriages were shorter in the a

Characteristics of reproductive tract microbiota in health and disease.

The symbiotic relationship between the microbiota and the host is crucial to host health. The reproductive tract microbiota in health and disease was examined by next-generation sequencing for the first time in this study. A total of 10 healthy and 30 diseased samples were collected for microbiota analysis. Species distributions, alpha diversity, beta diversity, and functional gene prediction were analyzed. Riemerella anatipestifer, Escherichia coli, Avibacterium paragallinarum, Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Enterococcus faecalis, and Acinetobacter baumannii were identified as pathogenic ba

Gut microbiota and their role in male reproductive health.

The gut microbiota, as the "second genome" of the human body, plays a central regulatory role in maintaining host physiological homeostasis; conversely, its dysbiosis can impair male reproductive function via the "gut-testis axis", leading to a series of pathological manifestations such as abnormal semen quality, sexual dysfunction, and reproductive organ damage. Gut microbiota exerts multidirectional effects on host metabolism, immunity, endocrinology, and the neural system, collectively forming a complex regulatory network for male reproduction. Among these, microbiota-derived metabolites su

Impact of dioxins on reproductive health in female mammals.

Extensive research has been conducted to investigate the toxicological impact of dioxins on mammals, revealing profound effects on the female reproductive system in both humans and animals. Dioxin exposure significantly disrupts the intricate functions of the ovary, a pivotal organ responsible for reproductive and endocrine processes. This disruption manifests as infertility, premature ovarian failure, and disturbances in sex steroid hormone levels. Comprehensive studies, encompassing accidental human exposure and experimental animal data, have raised a wealth of information with consistent ye

The role of KNDy neurons in human reproductive health.

In the early 2000s, metastin, an endogenous ligand for G protein-coupled receptor 54 (GPR54), was discovered in human placental extracts. In 2003, GPR54 receptor mutations were found in a family with congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Metastin was subsequently renamed kisspeptin after its coding gene, Kiss1. Since then, studies in mice and other animals have revealed that kisspeptin is located at the apex of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and regulates reproductive functions by modulating gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). In rodents, kisspeptin (Kiss1) neurons localize to

Value of self-care for sexual and reproductive health.

It is opportune for the Journal to contribute to Self-Care Month and Self-Care Day, as proclaimed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its efforts to promote self-care which is increasingly prominent in discourses in resource-limited settings for attaining universal health coverage. With sexual and reproductive health and rights facing hindrances, such as cultural barriers, self-care should facilitate access to services whilst maintaining privacy. Largely limited to pregnancy beforehand, self-care can now be promoted for the self-management of medical abortion, self-administration of inje

The Vaginal Microbiome and Reproductive Health in Adolescents and Adults.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to review our understanding of the vaginal microbiome (VM), the internal and external factors that influence its composition, and how it relates to adult and adolescent reproductive health. METHODS: A literature review was conducted in March 2024 using Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar. RESULTS: The majority of studies focused on the VM in healthy adult women and demonstrated that the VM changes across the menstrual cycle, with the greatest species diversity during menses. In most women, the VM is dominated by lactobacilli, however,

Sexual and reproductive health education for patients with myelomeningocele.

AIM: To evaluate the sexual and reproductive health education received by patients with myelomeningocele, the most severe form of spina bifida. METHOD: A survey designed to assess the sexual and reproductive health education given by a healthcare provider to patients with myelomeningocele was offered to all English-speaking patients aged 12 years or older with a myelomeningocele clinic visit. RESULTS: In total, 67 surveys were completed. Menstruation and menstrual management were discussed at a rate of 85% in females. Few patients had discussions with a provider about fertility (42%), sexual
