Navigating the Microbial Landscape: Understanding Dysbiosis in Human Genital Tracts and Its Impact on Fertility.

Dysbiosis, an imbalance in microbial communities, significantly impacts the health and functionality of the human genital tract, with profound implications for fertility and reproductive health. This review explores the intricate relationship between genital tract microbiota and reproductive outcomes, highlighting the composition and dynamics of these microbial communities in both females and males. In females, the vaginal microbiota, primarily dominated by Lactobacillus species, is essential for maintaining a healthy vaginal environment, preventing infections, and supporting reproductive func

Viral infections and implications for male reproductive health.

Viral infections have haunted humankind since times immemorial. Overpopulation, globalization, and extensive deforestation have created an ideal environment for a viral spread with unknown and multiple shedding routes. Many viruses can infect the male reproductive tract, with potential adverse consequences to male reproductive health, including infertility and cancer. Moreover, some genital tract viral infections can be sexually transmitted, potentially impacting the resulting offspring's health. We have summarized the evidence concerning the presence and adverse effects of the relevant viruse

[The role of the microbial factor in the pathogenesis of male infertility].

Microorganisms can be isolated from most seminal fluid samples, but the significance of bacteriospermia is uncertain because many males lack symptoms associated with the bacterial infection of the reproductive tract. The data on the influence of urogenital tract infections of fertility are contradictory. In many cases opportunistic microorganisms cause such classical infections of the urogenital tract as epididymitis and prostatitis, as well as subclinical reproductive tract infections. Some possible pathophysiological mechanisms of the development of infertility linked with infection of the e

Comparison and assessment of necropsy lesions in end-of-lay laying hens from different housing systems in Denmark.

Apperantly healthy laying hens at the end of production (60 to 91 wk) were investigated for the occurrence of pathology and bacterial infections. In total, 7,477 hens from 15 flocks representing the following production systems: Enriched cages, barn housed layers, and organic/free range layers were necropsied. Indications of bacterial infection were investigated by bacteriological cultivation. The overall prevalence of lesions was 16.60%, including lesions of both infectious and non-infectious origin. The most prevalent lesions were bursitis presternalis (6.65%), reproductive tract lesions (e.

Immune responses to HIV in the female reproductive tract, immunologic parallels with the gastrointestinal tract, and research implications.

The female reproductive tract is a major site of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue and susceptibility to HIV infection, yet the tissue site(s) of infection and the impact of HIV infection on this important mucosal tissue remain poorly understood. CD4(+) T cells and other cell types expressing the major coreceptors for HIV, CCR5, and CXCR4 are abundant in both the lower reproductive tract (endocervix and vagina) and the upper tract (endocervix and uterus) and are highly susceptible to infection. Antiviral defenses in the female reproductive tract are mediated by a variety of soluble factors and

Cell-mediated immunity to HIV in the female reproductive tract.

The majority of HIV infections occur via sexual transmission across a mucosal barrier. In the case of male-to-female transmission, HIV-susceptible target cells are abundant in the ectocervix and vagina but are also present in the upper reproductive tract (endocervix and uterus). While the mechanisms of HIV transmission in the female reproductive tract are an active area of investigation, cell-mediated immune responses in reproductive tissues have not been thoroughly characterized. HIV-specific CD8+ T cells are present in reproductive tissues, to some extent mirroring populations present in the

Chlamydia trachomatis, a hidden epidemic: effects on female reproduction and options for treatment.

The number of genital tract Chlamydia trachomatis infections is steadily increasing worldwide, with approximately 50-70% of infections asymptomatic. There is currently no uniform screening practice, current antibiotic treatment has failed to prevent the increased incidence, and there is no vaccine available. We examined studies on the epidemiology of C. trachomatis infections, the effects infections have on the female reproductive tract and subsequent reproductive health and what measures are being taken to reduce these problems. Undetected or multiple infections in women can lead to the devel

MUC1/episialin: a critical barrier in the female reproductive tract.

The female reproductive tract must resist microbial infections as well as support embryonic development, implantation and placentation. Reproductive tract mucins, in general, and Muc1/episialin, in particular, play key roles in implantation related events and in protection from microbial infection. High levels of mucin expression in the lower reproductive tract presumably affords protection against infection while down-regulation of uterine mucins has been suggested to provide access to the uterine surface. The present studies demonstrate that mucins, particularly Muc1, are effective barriers

Role for the mammalian female reproductive tract microbiome in pregnancy outcomes.

Since the discovery of the microbiome in humans, it has been studied in many mammalian species. Different microbiological communities with variable richness and diversity have been found among these species in distinct areas of the reproductive tract. Human studies have shown that the composition of the microbiome is dependent on body site and several host-related factors. Furthermore, specific phyla have been identified among the different species and within distinct areas of the female reproductive tract, but a "core" microbiome of the female reproductive tract has not been defined in any sp

Sneathia amnii, an unusual pathogen in spondylitis: A case report.

Sneathia amnii is an opportunistic pathogen of the female reproductive tract that has been reported to cause infections during pregnancy and in the post-partum period. Infections outside the reproductive tract have rarely been described. We report the case of a spondylitis due to S. amnii in a 72-year old woman, successfully treated after seven weeks of antimicrobial therapy. Growth of this pathogen guided our diagnosis towards a gynecological pathology; we discovered an endometrium adenocarcinoma. This case emphasizes the need for adequate incubation of discal biopsies, using aerobic and anae

Combination antimicrobial therapy for serious gynecological and obstetrical infections--obsolete?

The normal flora of the lower reproductive tract are the pathogens isolated from upper reproductive tract infections after cesarean section and hysterectomy and from intraperitoneal cultures taken from women treated for acute pelvic inflammatory disease. Because these infections are usually polymicrobial, traditional antimicrobial therapy has included various combinations of agents. During the last six years we used five different antimicrobial combinations to treat more than 600 women with one of the above infections. From 15% to 50% of cases required the addition of a third (anaerobic-specif

The Interaction Between Microorganisms, Metabolites, and Immune System in the Female Genital Tract Microenvironment.

The female reproductive tract microenvironment includes microorganisms, metabolites, and immune components, and the balance of the interactions among them plays an important role in maintaining female reproductive tract homeostasis and health. When any one of the reproductive tract microorganisms, metabolites, or immunity is out of balance, it will affect the other two, leading to the occurrence and development of diseases and the appearance of corresponding symptoms and signs, such as infertility, miscarriage, premature delivery, and gynecological tumors caused by infectious diseases of the r

Coccidioidomycosis of the male reproductive tract.

Coccidioides immitis infection of the male reproductive tract is a rare entity that can evade diagnosis and pose a dilemma in management. Initially, patients are often evaluated for malignancy or other infections such as tuberculosis. In the past, surgery was the only management option for C. immitis infection of the male reproductive tract, but azole therapy now provides an adjunct or an alternative. We describe two patients who received azole therapy for C. immitis infection of the male reproductive tract. One received fluconazole for prostatic disease, while one received surgery followed by

Immunity in the female sheep reproductive tract.

Immune surveillance in the female reproductive tract is dependent on the interplay of many factors that include the expression of pattern recognition receptors on epithelial cells, resident leukocyte populations and hormones, none of which are uniform. The lower reproductive tract must accommodate the presence of commensal organisms whereas the upper reproductive tract is sterile. However, the upper female reproductive tract has its own immunological challenge in that it must tolerate the presence of a semi-allogeneic fetus if pregnancy is to succeed. So, immune activation and effector mechani

Phenotype and functionality of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in the upper reproductive tract of healthy premenopausal women.

PROBLEM: The goal of this study was to investigate the phenotype and functional responsiveness of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T-cells in the upper reproductive tract of healthy premenopausal women. The lower reproductive tract is frequently studied as a site of sexually transmitted infections; however, the upper reproductive tract may also be a portal of entry and dissemination for pathogens, including HIV-1. METHOD OF STUDY: Endometrial biopsy, endocervical curettage, cytobrush, and blood were collected during mid-luteal phase from 23 healthy women. T-cells were isolated and analyzed by flow cytometry

Abnormal vaginal discharge among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa: the need for a paradigm shift from a syndromic approach to specific pathogen identification and directed treatment.

BACKGROUND: An abnormal vaginal discharge is a frequent manifestation of reproductive tract infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and vulvovaginal candidiasis. It is also a manifestation of bacterial vaginosis, which has a prevalence of up to 50% among women of reproductive age. Reproductive tract infections are associated with a range of reproductive health challenges and increase the risk of HIV acquisition. METHODS: This study was performed to critically review and discuss the current diagnostic and treatment approaches to abnormal vaginal discharge among women of re

Disorders of the Reproductive Tract of Rabbits.

Disorders of the reproductive tract are common in rabbits. Conditions are different in rabbits that are farmed for their meat or fur and those that are kept as pets. Farmed rabbits suffer from infections and diseases associated with pregnancy. Congenital abnormalities are more likely to be recognized and treated in pet rabbits. Pet rabbits suffer from age-related changes to their genital tract (hyperplasia, neoplasia, or hernias). Neutering is an important part of prevention and treatment of reproductive disorders. Knowledge of normal male and female reproductive anatomy is essential to preven
