Assessment of fine motor control in patients with occupation-related lateral epicondylitis.

Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a common overuse injury related to a mechanical overload of the wrist extensors' origin; however, some patients also complain of clumsiness suggesting a possible motor control problem. The purpose of this study was to examine for differences in fine motor control ability between subjects with LE and matched control subjects. Subtests of the Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT) and the Complete Manual Dexterity Test (CMDT) were administered to 28 subjects with LE, and 28 age, gender, and hand dominance-matched control subjects. The LE group demonstrated a significant decreas

Parametric Cortical Representations of Complexity and Preference for Artistic and Computer-Generated Fractal Patterns Revealed by Single-Trial EEG Power Spectral Analysis.

Fractals are self-similar patterns that repeat at different scales, the complexity of which are expressed as a fractional Euclidean dimension D between 0 (a point) and 2 (a filled plane). The drip paintings of American painter Jackson Pollock (JP) are fractal in nature, and Pollock's most illustrious works are of the high-D (~1.7) category. This would imply that people prefer more complex fractal patterns, but some research has instead suggested people prefer lower-D fractals. Furthermore, research has suggested that parietal and frontal brain activity tracks the complexity of fractal patterns

Longitudinal bibliometric investigation of published orthodontic research 2013-23: are we investigating patient-reported outcomes?

BACKGROUND: The published literature represents the fundamental basis of any academic specialty, including orthodontics. Orthodontic research outputs provide useful insight into clinical and research priorities, which can help inform future research efforts and resource outputs. In recent years, the need for more patient-reported outcomes in orthodontic research has been highlighted. OBJECTIVES: To identify the most common reported research subjects in orthodontics between 2013-23; (2) identify the main outcomes and types of study design associated with this research, including study design r

Managing chemobrain: Translational insights and evidence-based psychological interventions.

With the improving survival rates of malignant tumors, the focus of attention in cancer research is shifting toward a better understanding of long-term treatment-related adverse effects that impact quality of life, with particular focus on cancer-related cognitive impairment. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as "chemobrain" in the literature, manifests as deficits in attention, memory, processing speed, and executive functions. Although the frequency of objectively measured cognitive deficits detected through neuropsychological assessments are moderate, subjective complaints often result

Revisiting deficits in threat and safety appraisal in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Current behavioural treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is informed by fear conditioning and involves iteratively re-evaluating previously threatening stimuli as safe. However, there is limited research investigating the neurobiological response to conditioning and reversal of threatening stimuli in individuals with OCD. A clinical sample of individuals with OCD (N = 45) and matched healthy controls (N = 45) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging. While in the scanner, participants completed a well-validated fear reversal task and a resting-state scan. We found no evidenc

Visual consciousness in health and disease.

Conscious experience is an essential part of normal human life and interaction with the environment. Yet the nature of consciousness and conscious perception remains a mystery. Because of its subjective nature, consciousness has been difficult to investigate scientifically, but clues have been gained through studies involving patients with cortical lesions. During the past decade, the development of event-related fMRI has provided insights into aspects of conscious perception in control subjects and patients with cortical lesions by correlating awareness and performance with neural activity du

Vasomotor symptoms: natural history, physiology, and links with cardiovascular health.

Vasomotor symptoms (VMS), or hot flushes and night sweats, are the classic symptom of menopause. Recent years have brought key advances in the knowledge about VMS. VMS last longer than previously thought, on average 7-10 years for frequent or moderate to severe VMS. Although VMS have long been understood to be important to women's quality of life, research has also linked VMS to indicators of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, such as an adverse CVD risk factor profile, greater subclinical CVD and, in emerging work, CVD events. Relations between VMS and CVD are not typically accounted for by C

The association between physical pain and cannabis use in daily life: An experience sampling method.

BACKGROUND: Previous research shows that between individuals there is a positive association between medically motivated use and cannabis use frequency and quantity. While between-subjects' analyses are useful for understanding shared vulnerabilities, research has so far not examined within-subjects' relationships which are closer to evaluating functional relationships (i.e., do individuals tend to use cannabis more heavily subsequent to elevations in pain experiences?). To better understand the association between experiences of pain and cannabis use, the current paper examines whether there

Anxiety sensitivity correlates with two indices of right anterior insula structure in specific animal phobia.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a dispositional trait involving fear of anxiety-related symptoms. Functional imaging research suggests that the activity of the anterior insular cortex, particularly the right insula, may both mediate AS and play a role in the pathophysiology of phobias. However, no imaging studies have examined whether AS relates to insula morphology. We examined whether AS was significantly correlated with right anterior insula volume and thickness among adults with specific animal phobia (SAP) and healthy comparison (HC) subjects. METHODS: Nineteen adults with SAP an

Measuring health related quality of life in men with prostate cancer.

Health related quality of life is one of several end points commonly studied in medical outcomes research. It refers to how well an individual is functioning in life and to his or her own perceptions of well being. Although health related quality of life variables concern subjective phenomena, their measurement is rigorously quantitative and based upon the well defined principles of psychometric research methodology. Health related quality of life data are collected with survey instruments, which may be self-administered or require a trained interviewer. Some are completed at a medical facilit

An economic analysis of income and expenditures by heroin-using research volunteers.

At a Detroit research program from 2004 to 2005, out-of-treatment chronic daily heroin users (N = 100) were interviewed to evaluate relationships between past 30-day income and factors influencing heroin price, expenditures, and consumption. Weekly heroin purchasing frequency was positively related to income and number of suppliers, and negatively related to time cost (min) from primary supplier. Daily heroin consumption was positively related to income and injection heroin use, and negatively related to unit cost of heroin. Implications and limitations are noted. Simulations are underway to a
