Diagnosis and prognosis of acute respiratory distress syndrome related to diffuse pneumonic-type adenocarcinoma: a single-center case series study.

BACKGROUND: The absence of diagnosis of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) concerns 20% of cancer patients and is associated with poorer outcomes. Diffuse pneumonic-type adenocarcinoma (P-ADC) is part of these difficult-to-diagnose ARDS, but only limited data are available regarding critically ill patients with diffuse P-ADC. We sought to describe the diagnosis process and the prognosis of P-ADC related ARDS patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: Single-center observational case series study. All consecutive patients admitted to the ICU over a two-decade period p

Noninvasive ventilation for respiratory distress syndrome is a potential risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity : Single Slovenian tertiary center study.

Retinopathy of prematurity (nROP) among extremely low gestational age newborns (ELGAN) in Slovenia has increased in recent years. At the same time mortality has further decreased and less invasive approaches for treatment of respiratory distress syndrome have been established. With the aim to study the possible association between the incidence of ROP and the duration of noninvasive ventilation, this retrospective study comprised ELGANs born during the first period (2010/2011), when invasive respiratory support was the prevalent method and in the second period (2015/2016), when noninvasive res

Outcome of acute respiratory distress syndrome requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in Covid-19 or influenza: A single-center registry study.

Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) is used to sustain blood oxygenation and decarboxylation in severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It is under debate if V-V ECMO is as appropriate for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) ARDS as it is for influenza. In this retrospective study, we analyzed all patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 or influenza A/B infection, ARDS and V-V ECMO, treated at our medical intensive care unit (ICU) between October 2010 and June 2020. Baseline and procedural characteristics as well as survival 30 days after ECMO cannulation were anal

Comparing Important and Well-documented Potential Drug-Drug Interactions between Emergency, Medical, and Surgical ICUs of a Respiratory Referral Center.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-drug interaction (DDI) is one of the major healthcare challenges in intensive care units (ICUs). The prevalence of DDIs and interacting drug pairs may vary between different types of ICUs. This study aimed to compare the frequency and nature of important and well-documented potential DDIs (pDDIs) in three types of ICUs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in medical (M), surgical (S), and emergency (E) ICUs of a tertiary referral center for respiratory diseases. A pharmacist checked the patients' files three days in a week for 6 months. The pDDIs were i

Diversity and adaptation of human respiratory syncytial virus genotypes circulating in two distinct communities: public hospital and day care center.

HRSV is one of the most important pathogens causing acute respiratory tract diseases as bronchiolitis and pneumonia among infants. HRSV was isolated from two distinct communities, a public day care center and a public hospital in São José do Rio Preto - SP, Brazil. We obtained partial sequences from G gene that were used on phylogenetic and selection pressure analysis. HRSV accounted for 29% of respiratory infections in hospitalized children and 7.7% in day care center children. On phylogenetic analysis of 60 HRSV strains, 48 (80%) clustered within or adjacent to the GA1 genotype; GA5, NA1, NA

Odor identification ability and self-reported upper respiratory symptoms in workers at the post-9/11 World Trade Center site.

UNLABELLED: Following the World Trade Center (WTC) collapse on September 11, 2001, more than 40,000 people were exposed to a complex mixture of inhalable nanoparticles and toxic chemicals. While many developed chronic respiratory symptoms, to what degree olfaction was compromised is unclear. A previous WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program study found that olfactory and nasal trigeminal thresholds were altered by the toxic exposure, but not scores on a 20-odor smell identification test. OBJECTIVES: To employ a well-validated 40-item smell identification test to definitively establish w

EPR studies of higher plant mitochondria. II. Center S-3 of succinate dehydrogenase and its relation to alternative respiratory oxidations.

1. An electron paramagnetic resonance study of the high potential iron sulfur (HiPIP-type) Center S-3 of higher plant mitochondria is described. This center is the major HiPIP-type center associated with plant mitochondria and it displays physical properties which are similar to its mammalian counterpart. It has a pH-independent midpoint potential of +65 +/- 10 mV between pH 6.0 and 8.5. 2. The behavior of Center S-3 in a variety of steady-state conditions suggests that it is of physiological significance in electron transport. Furthermore, it can be shown that the alternative oxidase, which i
