Mitochondrial respiratory rates and activities of respiratory chain complexes correlate linearly with heteroplasmy of deleted mtDNA without threshold and independently of deletion size.

To clarify the importance of deleted protein and tRNA genes on the impairment of mitochondrial function, we performed a quantitative analysis of biochemical, genetic and morphological findings in skeletal muscles of 16 patients with single deletions and 5 patients with multiple deletions of mtDNA. Clinically, all patients showed chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO). The size of deletions varied between 2.5 and 9 kb, and heteroplasmy between 31% and 94%. In patients with single deletions, the citrate synthase (CS) activity was nearly doubled. Decreased ratios of pyruvate- and suc

Contrasting respiratory response to regulate resilience under marine heatwave intensities and onset rates.

Marine heatwaves (MHW) occur at varying profiles (intensity, onset, duration) and their impact depends on species-specific thermal physiology. While physiological processes may support resilience to MHW-induced thermal stress, metabolic costs may have strong post-MHW implications. Here, by assessing respiratory response, we link metabolic costs of a model marine crustacean (copepod) to MHW profiles and determine the mechanisms involved in recovery and potential vulnerability to additional thermal stress. Our results suggest that copepods potentially used metabolic depression as a response to i

Assessment of Respiratory Rate and Simulated Apnea Utilizing the PneumoWave Biosensor: In Vitro and In Vivo Validation.

Accurate monitoring of respiratory rates is critical for early detection of a range of clinical conditions. However, standard manual counting or inadequate clinical monitoring often fails to provide reliable measurements. This study evaluated and validated the PneumoWave biosensor for respiratory rate measurement across a broad physiological range and different body postures (45°, 90°, and 180°) in both in vitro and in vivo settings. In vitro validation was performed using a SimMan ALS manikin operated at respiratory settings of 6-30 breaths per minute, with 10 s periods of simulated apnea. In

A hierarchical logistic regression predicting rapid respiratory rates from post-exertional malaise.

BACKGROUND: Past research has found high rates of hyperventilation in patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), but hyperventilation can be influenced by psychological factors. Clinical respiratory rates have been less frequently assessed. AIM: This study aimed to identify the predictors of rapid respiratory rates in patients referred to an outpatient clinic specializing in ME/CFS. METHODS: Adults (n = 216) referred to an outpatient clinic specializing in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) participated in a two-day cardiopulmonary exe

Influence of Noninvasive Ventilation Protocol on Intubation Rates in Subjects With De Novo Respiratory Failure.

BACKGROUND: The use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is debated in de novo respiratory failure. Prolonged sessions, using a dedicated NIV ventilator, with high PEEP levels could be associated with better outcomes than shorter sessions using an ICU ventilator, with low PEEP levels. We performed a systematic review of randomized controlled trials to test whether the incidence of intubation was influenced by the NIV protocol in subjects admitted to the ICU for de novo respiratory failure. METHODS: We selected randomized trials on NIV indexed in medical literature databases from their inception t

High rates of respiratory symptoms and airway disease in mental health inpatients in a tertiary centre.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness (SMI) have a lower life expectancy due in part to a higher prevalence of cardiac and metabolic disease. Less is known of the prevalence of respiratory disease in this group. AIMS: This cross-sectional, observational study aimed to assess the prevalence of symptoms associated with respiratory disease in patients admitted to an inpatient mental health unit. METHODS: A convenience sample of 82 inpatients had a structured interview and questionnaire completed. The questionnaire included self-reported diagnoses of common diseases and screening questio

Frequency and trajectory of abnormalities in respiratory rate, temperature and oxygen saturation in severe pneumonia in children.

The frequency or trajectory of vital sign abnormalities in children with pneumonia has not been described. In a cohort of 2714 patients with severe pneumonia identified and treated as per the World Health Organization definition and recommendations, tachypnea, fever and hypoxia were found in 68.9%, 23.6% and 15.5% of children, respectively. Median oxygen saturation returned to a normal range by 10 hours following initiation of treatment, followed by temperature at 12 hours and respiratory rate at 22 hours for subjects <12 months and at 48 hours for those ≥ 12 months of age.

Prevalence of respiratory diseases and their association with growth rate and space in randomly selected swine herds.

The prevalence and extent of respiratory tract lesions were measured in 1425 pigs from 27 randomly selected herds in the summer of 1982 and winter of 1983. About 75% of pigs had lesions of enzootic pneumonia, approximately 60% had atrophic rhinitis and approximately 11% had pleuropneumonia and/or pleuritis. Individual pig growth rate was recorded on two of the farms, and it was found that the correlations between growth rate and severity of enzootic pneumonia lesions were positive on one farm and negative on the other. Negative correlations between severity of turbinate atrophy and growth rate

A Scoping Review of Laryngeal Edema Rating Scales for Extubated Acute Respiratory Failure Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: After extubation for acute respiratory failure (ARF), many survivors exhibit laryngeal edema. Laryngeal edema is an independent predictor of aspiration, stridor, and reintubation-events associated with morbidity, mortality, and complex hospital courses. Evaluating associations between laryngeal edema and adverse clinical outcomes requires accurate and reproducible edema rating instruments. The aims of this review were to identify existing laryngeal edema rating scales and to assess which scales, if any, are adequately designed for ARF patients. DATA SOURCES: A structured search of

Respiratory rate as a X-ray-based biomarker for the longitudinal assessment of lung function and pathology.

Respiratory rate (RR) is a valuable, yet underexploited lung functional parameter in preclinical lung research, aiding drug toxicity studies, lung disease assessments, stress, pain, and sleep research. It may also enhance translatability between animal and human studies. Longitudinal micro-computed tomography (microCT) lung data acquisitions not only contain spatial information on lung disease, volumes and patterns, but also temporal information covering many breathing cycles. This enables reliable and non-invasive extraction of lung morphological and functional biomarkers, including RR, with

Effect of airflow rate on droplet deposition of an impinging-jet inhaler in the human respiratory tract.

This paper presents a numerical investigation to understand the transport and deposition of sprays emitted by an impinging-jet inhaler in the human respiratory tract under different inhalation flow rates. An injection model is used for the numerical simulations considering the spreading angles of the spray in the two directions, which are measured from experiments. The model parameter is adjusted to match the mean droplet size measured in the previous experiment. A time-varying sinusoidal inhalation flow rate is utilized as airflow conditions, which is closer to the actual situation when using

Insight into the Burden of Malignant Respiratory Tumors and their Relationship with Smoking Rates and Lead Contamination in Mexico.

We aimed to report the results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 related to respiratory malignant tumors (tracheal, bronchial, and lung) in Mexico. We also evaluated the relationship between the burden of these neoplasms and the proportion of daily smokers and total lead emissions in 2019. A cross-sectional analysis of ecological data was performed. The burden of these tumors was 152,189 disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and years of life lost (YLL) contributed to 99% of them. The highest DALYs rates (per 100,000) were observed in the states of Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Baja Califor

The Performance of Digital Monitoring Devices for Oxygen Saturation and Respiratory Rate in COPD: A Systematic Review.

Healthcare access and delivery for individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who live in remote areas or who are susceptible to contracting communicable diseases, such as COVID-19, may be a challenge. Telehealth and remote monitoring devices can be used to overcome this issue. However, the accuracy of these devices must be ensured before forming healthcare decisions based on their outcomes. Therefore, a systematic review was performed to synthesize the evidence on the reliability, validity and responsiveness of digital devices used for tracking oxygen saturation (SpO2) and/

Respiratory infection rates differ between geographically distant paediatric cystic fibrosis cohorts.

Respiratory infections are a major cause of pulmonary decline in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). We compared the prevalence of infection in early life at geographically distant CF treatment centres participating in the same surveillance programme in Australia. Lower airway microbiology, inflammation and structural lung disease at annual review were evaluated for 260 children 0-8 years old with CF at 1032 visits to CF treatment centres in Melbourne or Perth. Melbourne patients were more likely to be culture-positive for common respiratory pathogens at all age groups (odds ratio (OR) 1.85, 9

Improvements in PM10 exposure and reduced rates of respiratory symptoms in a cohort of Swiss adults (SAPALDIA).

RATIONALE: Reductions in mortality following improvements in air quality were documented by several studies, and our group found, in an earlier analysis, that decreasing particulate levels attenuate lung function decline in adults. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether decreases in particulates with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 microm (PM10) were associated with lower rates of reporting respiratory symptoms (i.e., decreased morbidity) on follow-up. METHODS: The present analysis includes 7,019 subjects who underwent detailed baseline examinations in 1991 and a follow-up interview in

Respiratory phase shapes brain-heart dynamics: evidence from recurrence analysis of EEG band power and heart rate.

INTRODUCTION: Respiration is increasingly recognized as a key modulator of brain-body interactions, influencing both neural and autonomic dynamics. While prior work has demonstrated respiratory-driven entrainment, it remains unclear whether distinct phases of the breathing cycle give rise to different dynamical regimes of cortical activity. METHODS: In this study, we investigated respiratory-phase-dependent modulation of brain-heart interactions during controlled breathing, focusing on breath-hold periods following inhalation and exhalation. EEG band power time series and heart rate (HR) were
