[Neurons of the medulla oblongata and hypothalamus projecting on the sympathetic neurons of the ventral horn of the spinal cord].

Connections of the neurons of the spinal cord ventral horn with the structures, situating above have been investigated. After injection of uranyl acetate into the TIII segment of the spinal cord, labelled neurons are found in various reticular nuclei of the medulla oblongata. At the level of the roots of the XII pair of the cranial nerves they are revealed in the reticular paramedian, ventral, parvocellular and lateral nuclei. The formations mentioned participate in regulation of the cardio-vascular system. More rostral (2 and 4 mm relatively to the roots of the XII pair of the cranial nerves)

[Intracranial pressure irregularities induced by bulbar stimulation in experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage].

Neurogenic mechanisms of pressure waves were investigated in dogs with acute intracranial hypertension. After subarachnoid infusion of hemolyzed red blood cells, simultaneous recordings of both systemic blood pressure (SBP) and intracranial pressure (ICP) were made continuously. Pressure waves could be induced by electrical stimulation of the medulla oblongata at the stage of increased ICP. Induced pressure waves were specific at the site of the stimulation. These pressure waves were classified into 3 types, consisting of fast waves, slow waves and rebound waves. The fast waves had a duration

Renal and somatic input to spinal neurons antidromically activated from the ventrolateral medulla.

1. Studies were done to characterize responses of spinal neurons backfired from the ventrolateral medulla to renal and somatic stimuli. Experiments were performed on 31 cats that were anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. Sixty-six spinal neurons were antidromically activated from the area of the lateral reticular nucleus or the ventrolateral reticular formation just rostral to the lateral reticular nucleus contralateral to the recording site. These cells could not be backfired from the medial reticular formation or from the spinothalamic tract just caudal to the thalamus. 2. Cells were located

[Persistent lateral gaze palsy and abducens nerve palsy due to pontine infarction].

A 76-year-old hypertensive man noticed sudden dizziness and diplopia. On examination, right-sided gaze deviation was present, but the remainder of the neurological examination was normal. Five days later, MRI revealed a small lesion in the left paramedian pontine tegmentum, which was consistent with pontine infarction. The conjugate deviation disappeared about two weeks after the onset, but a left lateral gaze and abducens nerve palsy have persisted at ten months after the infarct. MRI findings are unchanged. The site of infarction is presumed to be located in the caudal portion of paramedian

Midbrain paresis of horizontal gaze.

Unilateral paramedian involvement of the midbrain tegmentum causes monocular paralysis of adduction in the ipsilateral eye, paresis of contralateral saccades in the opposite eye, and conjugate paresis of ipsilateral smooth pursuit. The adduction paralysis can be nuclear, or internuclear from a lesion in the medial longitudinal fasciculus. This distinctive midbrain syndrome of horizontal gaze paresis is exemplified by means of quantitative infrared oculographic, radiological, and neuropathological correlation in two patients with predominantly paramedian midbrain tumors involving the mesencepha

Neural pathway for aggressive display in Betta splendens: midbrain and hindbrain control of gill-cover erection behavior.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used to identify parts of the presumptive neural pathway for gill cover erection, a behavioral display pattern performed by Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) during aggressive interactions. Motor, motor integration and sensory areas were identified in the medulla and mesencephalon. Motor neurons of the dilator operculi muscle, the effector muscle for gill cover erection, are located in the lateral and medial parts of the caudal trigeminal motor nucleus. Iontophoretic injections of HRP into the lateral trigeminal motor nucleus resulted in labeled cell bodi

Recovery of consciousness after a brainstem cavernous malformation hemorrhage: A descriptive study of preserved reticular activating system with tractography.

The aim of this study is to describe the imaging features, the relevant anatomy, and the fractional anisotropy (FA) values in diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) of the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS) fiber tracts in 2 patients who recovered from initial altered consciousness after presenting with a brainstem cavernous malformation (BSCM) hemorrhage. A DTT was performed in 2 patients with impaired consciousness after a brainstem cavernous malformation hemorrhage. A 1.5 T scanner was used to obtain the axial tensors. Post-processing was performed and the mean FA values were recorde

[Myoclonus as a movement disorder].

Myoclonus is often a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge due to its broad phenomenological variability and limited therapeutic options. This article gives a short survey and characterizes in detail two common types of myoclonus, cortical myoclonus and reticular reflex myoclonus. Clinical testing and electrophysiological investigations provide relevant local diagnostic indications for the generating structure(s). Such indications would influence not only the strategies of neuroimaging and laboratory investigations aimed at clarifying the underlying cause but also the selection of drugs to supp

Neurophysiology of myoclonus.

Myoclonus may be generated by any area in the central nervous system. Finding its generator is helpful in the diagnostic process. Although clinical features have to be carefully analyzed as they may give a first idea, neurophysiologic study of myoclonus provides the most important clues for the determination of the generator. Surface electromyography (EMG) allows analyzing the recruitment order in generalized myoclonus, thereby suggesting either a cortical, brainstem, or spinal origin. It also reveals whether myoclonus is positive (jerks that are caused by muscle activation) or negative (jerks

An unusual pathologic feature associated with dermatomyositis.

We present a case of juvenile dermatomyositis with unusual histopathologic findings. The child presented with a course consistent with dermatomyositis, a diagnosis confirmed by finding reticulotubular aggregates in endothelial cells on electron microscopy. However, histopathology of his muscle biopsy revealed a striking pattern of glycogen accumulation, to an extent similar to that seen in glycogen storage diseases; this degree of accumulation could potentially confound histopathologic diagnosis.

Effects of rotation on the P13 mid-latency auditory evoked potential in rat.

The P13 mid-latency auditory evoked potential in Rat is a sleep state-dependent response thought to be equivalent to the human P50 potential, a measure of the output of the reticular activating system. The amplitude of these potentials can be considered a measure of level of arousal, while, using a paired stimulus paradigm, the degree of habituation of the responses also can be assessed. Different durations of rotation were found to reduce the amplitude of the P13 potential, which recovered in a duration-dependent manner. Different durations of rotation led to decreases in habituation of the P

Transmission through the dorsal spinocerebellar and spinoreticular tracts: wakefulness versus thiopental anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Most of what is known regarding the actions of injectable barbiturate anesthetics on the activity of lumbar sensory neurons arises from experiments performed in acute animal preparations that are exposed to invasive surgery and neural depression caused by coadministered inhalational anesthetics. Other parameters such as cortical synchronization and motor ouflow are typically not monitored, and, therefore, anesthetic actions on multiple cellular systems have not been quantitatively compared. METHODS: The activities of antidromically identified dorsal spinocerebellar and spinoreticu

[The clinico-pathological findings of the patients grouped as respiratory motor paralysis preceded type of ALS].

We reported five autopsied patients grouped as respiratory motor paralysis preceded type of ALS (R-ALS) classified as one clinical type of ALS from the patients living beyond respiratory failure reported in the previous paper, in which ALS the ontogenetically new motor functions in the "first motor system" proposed by Holstege involved first. The neuropathological changes of five patients were not limited in the degeneration of conventional "motor system" such as corticospinal tract and spinal and cranial motoneurons, but extended into the realm of "non-motor system", which could show the ante

Neocortical and hippocampal electrical activities are similar in spontaneous and cholinergic-induced REM sleep.

Neocortical and hippocampal EEG power spectra obtained during REM-like sleep induced by unilateral carbachol microinjections (0.01 M, 0.02 M and 0.2 M; volume 20 nl) into the ventral part of the nucleus reticularis pontis oralis have been compared with EEG power spectra obtained during spontaneous REM sleep. Our findings indicate that neocortical and hippocampal electrical activities during the REM-like state generated by carbachol delivery in this pontine region mimic those present in spontaneous REM sleep.

Pontine microinjection of carbachol does not reliably enhance paradoxical sleep in rats.

It has been repeatedly shown in cats that acute administration of carbachol into the pontine reticular formation (PRF) readily evokes a state that closely mimics natural paradoxical sleep (PS). Surprisingly, there are few corresponding studies in rats. In order to further characterize the effects of pontine carbachol in rats, 151 injections of different doses (from 3 micrograms to 0.005 microgram in 0.1 microliter saline) of carbachol were made at different sites within the PRF of 70 rats. Sleep-waking states obtained in the 4 hours following carbachol administration were compared to control v

[The effect of impulse stimulation of the visual cortex on the function of the superior colliculus in the waking rabbit].

In alert rabbits, pulse stimulation of the visual cortex interfered with the formation of short latency responses in superior colliculus. The effect of visual cortex upon the superior colliculus function may have a phasic inhibitory character. Blockade of the RF adrenergic apparatus enhances the inhibitory effect, whereas stimulation of the RF by anodal current induces an opposite effect. The character of cortical influence upon the superior colliculus function seems to depend on initial functional state of cerebral unspecific systems.

Telencephalic ascending acousticolateral system in a teleost (Sebastiscus marmoratus), with special reference to the fiber connections of the nucleus preglomerulosus.

Acousticolateral systems were examined by means of the horseradish peroxidase tracing method in a teleost (Sebastiscus marmoratus). The torus semicircularis projected bilaterally to the optic tectum, nucleus ventromedialis thalami of Schnitzlein ('62), and reticular formation; contralaterally to the torus semicircularis; and ipsilaterally to the nucleus preglomerulosus of Schnitzlein ('62) and the inferior olive. No topographic organization was detected between the torus semicircularis and the nucleus preglomerulosus. Ipsilateral inputs to the torus were from dorsal telencephalic areas (pars c
