Tamoxifen induced maculopathy presenting like macular telangiectasia type 2 in a patient with breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-induced crystalline maculopathy has been reported secondary to tamoxifen use for breast cancer treatment. It could be misdiagnosed as macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel type 2). CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old woman with a history of diabetes mellitus and breast cancer was referred to our clinic with painless, bilateral, gradual onset of central vision loss for several months. The fundus examination showed the macular pigmentary change in both eyes and a few refractile crystalline deposits in the parafoveal area in the left eye. However, the rest of the retina was normal in b

Cerebroretinal microangiopathy with calcifications and cysts.

BACKGROUND: Extensive cerebral calcifications and leukoencephalopathy have been reported in two rare disorders Coats plus and leukoencephalopathy with calcifications and cysts. In the latter, a progressive formation of parenchymal brain cysts is a special feature, whereas Coats plus is characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, bilateral retinal telangiectasias and exudations (Coats disease), sparse hair, and dysplastic nails without cyst formation. METHODS: We identified 13 patients, including two pairs of siblings, with extensive cerebral calcifications and leukoencephalopathy. We re

Telangiectasia and optic atrophy in cone-rod degenerations.

The diagnosis of cone-rod dysfunction is made with the electroretinogram (ERG). Characteristically, the photopic ERG is worse than the scotopic ERG, and both are abnormal. Of a larger group of patients with retinal dystrophy, 20 cases of cone-rod dysfunction were identified. All patients had progressive disease, and all three main modes of inheritance were represented. There was remarkable similarity of findings among all patients, including temporal disc atrophy, telangiectasia of disc vessels, and little to no pigmentary retinal changes. Patients were not night-blind unless advanced disease

Successful resolution of coats disease by photodynamic therapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Coats disease is a retinal disease characterized by exudative retinal detachment due to abnormal retinal blood vessels. Coats disease is generally treated using laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy to ablate the abnormal retinal blood vessels. However, if abnormal blood vessels are present near the posterior pole of the eye and there is a severe exudative change there, it is difficult to perform these standard treatments. We describe a case of Coats disease with severe exudative retinal change and retinal vascular abnormality near the posterior pole for which we performed photody

Combined treatment for Coats' disease: retinal laser photocoagulation combined with intravitreal bevacizumab injection was effective in two cases.

BACKGROUND: The exact pathogenetic mechanisms of Coats' disease remain unknown. In this report, we show two cases of Coats' disease that achieved a favorable prognosis with the combined treatment of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injection prior to photocoagulation, although both initially resisted photocoagulation therapy. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Case 1 was a 15-year-old boy with initial visual acuity of 0.4 OD. At the temporal retina, aneurysms and abnormal telangiectatic vessels were observed. Hard exudates and an exudative retinal detachment extended to the fovea. He was diagnosed as having C

Retinal vasodilatation in the affected eye but reduced pressure autoregulation of both eyes in unilateral Coats' disease.

BACKGROUND: Coats' disease is characterized by vascular hyperpermeability, oedema and accumulation of exudates related to impairment of retinal vascular function. The background for the development of the disease is unknown, but it is likely that the study of diameter changes of retinal vessels may contribute to understanding the pathophysiology of the disease. METHODS: In seven patients with unilateral Coats' disease (mean age = 34.7 years, range: 11-69 years), the baseline diameter and reactivity of retinal vessels during an increase in the arterial blood pressure by isometric exercise and
