Acetate-based biological platforms: Bridging carbon dioxide utilization and high-value bioproduct production in oleaginous yeasts.

Acetate is emerging as a promising two-carbon substrate in the circular bioeconomy, bridging the gap between single-carbon sources and high-value biofuels and bioproducts. This review examines the key pathways for acetate production, including the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide, syngas fermentation, and biological acetogenesis. It focuses on acetate metabolism in oleaginous yeasts, such as Yarrowia lipolytica and Rhodotorula toruloides, which efficiently convert acetate-derived acetyl-CoA units into diverse bioproducts such as lipids, fatty alcohols, triacetic acid lactone, and ca

Extracellular phospholipase, protease and hemolysin production by strains of opportunistic yeasts from the excreta of Mew Gulls breeding in natural and urban habitats.

Extracellular hydrolytic activity (phospholipase, protease and hemolysin production) was evaluated in 178 strains of potentially pathogenic ascomycetous (Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis) and basidiomycetous (Rhodotorula mucilaginosa) yeasts isolated from the excreta of Mew Gulls. Two bird colonies, one nesting in a natural habitat and the other in an urban habitat at the landfill, were studied simultaneously during their 7-month breeding season. Significant differences in phospholipase and protease production were found between natural and anthropophized strains. Both virulent activit

Volatile compounds for biotechnological applications produced during competitive interactions between yeasts and fungi.

Fungi, yeasts and bacteria produce volatile compounds during their metabolism. In this study, the volatile compounds produced by yeast strains (Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa) and fungal strains (Aspergillus carbonarius and Aspergillus ochraceus) during competitive interactions were investigated by solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Fifty-six volatile compounds were identified representing alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ketones, aromatic compounds, acids, furans, phenols, and nitrogen compounds, being the largest amount in the cl

The carbohydrate utilization regulator Cbr1 coordinates nutrient-specific gene activation with selective carbon catabolite repression in a basidiomycete yeast.

Cells must sense and respond to nutrients to survive. To efficiently grow in mixed carbon environments, microbes repress genes necessary to utilize carbon sources that require substantial resources to catabolize when a simpler carbon source, such as glucose, is present. This process is known as carbon catabolite repression. Canonically, in fungi, nutrient sensing transcriptional networks are composed of carbon source-specific transcription factors that activate carbon source utilization genes and carbon catabolite repression regulators, which broadly repress all nonpreferred carbon source util

Generation of tetramycin B derivative with improved pharmacological property based on pathway engineering.

Polyene antibiotics, including amphotericin, nystatin, pimaricin, and tetramycin, are important antifungal agents. Increasing the production of polyenes and generation of their improved analogues based on the biosynthetic pathway engineering has aroused wide concern in application researches. Herein, tetramycin and nystatin, both of which share most of acyl-CoA precursors, are produced by Streptomyces hygrospinosus var. beijingensis CGMCC 4.1123. Thus, the intracellular malonyl-CoA is found to be insufficient for PKSs (polyketide synthases) extension of tetramycin by quantitative analysis in t

From hive to laboratory - biotechnological potential of microorganisms from honey.

Honey is a valuable source of microorganisms that may have potential applications in various fields of science and industry. The high sugar content and low pH inhibit the growth of most microorganisms; however, some are capable of adapting to these conditions. Moreover, the bioactive components of honey, such as hydrogen peroxide and flavonoids, exhibit antimicrobial activity, which limits the proliferation of pathogens while simultaneously promoting the selection of microorganisms with beneficial properties. These include bacteria from the genera Lactobacillus, Fructilactobacillus, Leuconosto

Evolution of yeasts and lactic Acid bacteria during fermentation and storage of bordeaux wines.

The levels of yeasts and lactic acid bacteria that naturally developed during the vinification of two red and two white Bordeaux wines were quantitatively examined. Yeasts of the genera Rhodotorula, Pichia, Candida, and Metschnikowia occurred at low levels in freshly extracted grape musts but died off as soon as fermentation commenced. Kloeckera apiculata (Hanseniaspora uvarum), Torulopsis stellata, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the dominant yeasts in musts, proliferated to conduct alcoholic fermentation. K. apiculata and eventually T. stellata died off as fermentation progressed, leaving S. c

Infrared stimulation of mitochondrial metabolism in deep-sea yeast expands the energetic framework of hydrothermal ecosystems.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are archetypal chemosynthetic ecosystems, yet the intense geothermal near-infrared (NIR) radiation emitted by black smoker chimneys remains a largely unexplored environmental factor. While infrared (IR)-driven photosynthesis has been described in vent-associated bacteria, whether deep-sea eukaryotes can biologically respond to geothermal NIR radiation has remained unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the vent yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa F-J1 exhibits wavelength-specific growth stimulation under NIR exposure through a previously unrecognized mitochondria-centered me

Impact of agricultural practices on microbiology of hay, silage and flour on Finnish and French farms.

Exposure to microorganisms in farm environments may cause respiratory disorders, e.g. asthma, organic dust toxic syndrome and allergic alveolitis. By reducing microbiological deterioration of organic materials, some agricultural practices have a protective effect. Microbiological analyses were carried out on hay, silage and flour samples (n=107) from farms in Finland and France (n=23) that use different methods of haymaking. High concentrations of Absidia corymbifera were found in approximately 35 % of French hay samples and only 10 % of Finnish hay samples. Concentrations of Eurotium spp. wer

Submicron infrared spectroscopy assessment of single-cell phenotypic diversity in microbial lipid production.

BACKGROUND: Microbial lipid production offers a sustainable method for creating biofuels, lubricants, and high-value oils, utilizing the metabolic uniqueness of diverse organisms like bacteria, yeasts, and microalgae. However, minor physicochemical variations in bioreactors, along with subtle biochemical differences in organism's life stages, can lead to phenotypic diversity and impact the production. Therefore, monitoring, understanding and managing this diversity within bioreactors is essential in microbial biotechnology. Optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy can provide label-

Selection of Antarctic yeasts as gray mold biocontrol agents in strawberry.

The postharvest disease popularly known as gray mold is considered one of the most limiting factors strawberry fruit production. The most effective way to control this disease is still the use of chemical fungicides. However, other alternative sources of control are being explored. Among these, psychrophilic yeasts adapted to extreme conditions, such as those found in the Antarctic region, may have great potential for use as biocontrol agents. Thus, the present study aimed to select psychrotolerant yeasts obtained from Antarctic region and to evaluate their potential for biocontrol under gray
