The rapidly progressing and fatal outcome of rhombencephalitis by listeriosis in a 61-year-old male.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium that is ubiquitous in the environment and can cause severe infections in immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, and newborns. Listeriosis can manifest as meningitis, encephalitis, or sepsis, and its diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion. The case is reported of a rare presentation of rhombencephalitis by listeriosis in a 61-year-old male who initially suffered from subacute gastric disturbances and fever. Neurological consultation showed abnormal functions of cranial nerves and meningeal signs were observe

Hindbrain malformation and myoclonic seizures associated with a deleterious mutation in the INPP4A gene.

Hindbrain malformations with predominant cerebellar involvement have many causes including chromosomal disorders, specific genetic syndromes, and prenatal disruptions. The combination of a hindbrain malformation and myoclonic epilepsy is rare. Using exome sequencing in a consanguineous family, we identified a homozygous genomic deletion of 1770 bp within the INPP4A gene in a patient with myoclonic epilepsy, microcephaly, and atrophy of the inferior vermis and cerebellum. INPP4A participates in the excitatory glutamate signaling pathway and is essential for the degradation of phosphatidylinosit

Hindbrain mineralocorticoid mechanisms on sodium appetite.

Aldosterone acting on the brain stimulates sodium appetite and sympathetic activity by mechanisms that are still not completely clear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of chronic infusion of aldosterone and acute injection of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonist RU 28318 into the fourth ventricle (4th V) on sodium appetite. Male Wistar rats (280-350 g) with a stainless-steel cannula in either the 4th V or lateral ventricle (LV) were used. Daily intake of 0.3 M NaCl increased to 46 ± 15 and 130 ± 6 ml/24 h after 6 days of infusion of 10 and 100 ng/h of aldosterone int

Möbius syndrome as a syndrome of rhombencephalic maldevelopment: a case report.

Möbius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by congenital facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. It is considered as a rhombencephalic disorder, and is often accompanied with hypoplasia of the pons and cerebellum. Here we report a male infant who had congenital facial asymmetry with absence of right-sided expression. Evident developmental delay was also found. The bilateral auditory brain stem response showed no response at 85dB. A reconstructive brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the absence of the right facial nerve as well as hypoplasia of the pons

Evolutionary patterns of cranial nerve efferent nuclei in vertebrates.

All vertebrates have a similar series of rhombomeric hindbrain segments within which cranial nerve efferent nuclei are distributed in a similar rostrocaudal sequence. The registration between these two morphological patterns is reviewed here to highlight the conserved vs. variable aspects of hindbrain organization contributing to diversification of efferent sub-nuclei. Recent studies of segmental origins and migrations of branchiomotor, visceromotor and octavolateral efferent neurons revealed more segmental similarities than differences among vertebrates. Nonetheless, discrete variations exist

Neurolisteriosis causing hydrocephalus, trapped fourth ventricle, hindbrain herniation and syringomyelia.

Central nervous system infection by Listeria monocytogenes is relatively uncommon, but is known to be highly morbid and fatal. We describe a case of listeria meningoencephalitis, wherein the acute episode was followed by a hitherto unreported conglomeration of severe and progressive neurological sequelae, in the form of supratentorial hydrocephalus, aqueduct block, trapped fourth ventricle, hindbrain herniation and syringomyelia. Pertinent literature is reviewed and the pathogenesis of the observed sequelae is explored.

Rhombencephalosynapsis and a Chiari II malformation.

Rhombencephalosynapsis is an anomaly of the hindbrain characteristically presenting with cerebellar fusion and absence of cerebellar vermis on magnetic resonance imaging. Its association with spinal anomalies has not been reported previously. We report a unique case, a 22-year-old man with cerebellar fusion associated with a cervicothoracic meningomyelocele, diastematomyelia, tethering of the spinal cord, and dorsal dermal sinuses. In addition, cerebellar tonsillar herniation and tectal beaking similar to that seen in Chiari II malformations were present. These findings suggest that rhombencep

Adult rhombencephalosynapsis. Case report.

Rhombencephalosynapsis (RS) is a relatively rare developmental disorder of the cerebellum in which the cerebellar hemispheres are fused across the midline without being separated by a cleft or the vermis. The condition may be associated with hydrocephalus and other intracranial and extracranial abnormalities. The authors report on the case of a symptomatic adult who was successfully treated with suboccipital decompression and duraplasty. A 39-year-old woman presented with intractable pain radiating from the thoracolumbar column to the occiput. A general examination yielded normal findings and

Segmental pattern and nuclei in the human embryonic brain at stage 13.

Studies of serial sections and reconstructions of embryos at stage 13 (32) postovulatory days) revealed that the cranial neural tube in the investigated embryos possesses 15 neuromers: 1 telencephalic, 3 diencephalic, 3 mesencephalic, and 8 rhombencephalic. Within the primary efferent column all nuclei of the cranial nerves may be distinguished. Also fibers entering brain from cranial nerve ganglia form the common afferent tract. The relation of neuromers to the motor nuclei of the cranial nerves is following: M1-oculomotor, M2-trochlear, Rh2-trigeminal, Rh4-facial, Rh6-glossopharyngeal, Rh7-v

The timing and sequence of appearance of neuromeres and their derivatives in staged human embryos.

Serial sections of 215 human embryos from Carnegie stages 6-17 were investigated, and 85 graphic reconstructions were prepared. It is proposed that neuromeres be defined as morphologically identifiable transverse subdivisions perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the embryonic brain and extending onto both sides of the body. It is proposed further that primary neuromeres be redefined as the early-appearing larger divisions of the open neural folds, and secondary neuromeres as the smaller subdivisions that are found both before and after closure of the neural tube. In the light of these def

Musical auditory hallucinosis from Listeria rhombencephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Complex auditory hallucinations have rarely been reported in cases of brainstem stroke or tumor. METHOD: Case study. RESULTS: A patient with acute Listeria rhombencephalitis complained of formed musical auditory hallucinations on the side of recent sensorineural deafness. MRI revealed an abscess in the middle cerebellar peduncule with extensive surrounding edema. CONCLUSIONS: Disruption of brainstem auditory pathways may cause complex auditory hallucinations. Potential pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed and a diagnostic approach is proposed.

Cerebellar Inputs in the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

Crocodilians (alligators, crocodiles, and gharials) are the closet living relatives to birds and, as such, represent a key clade to understand the evolution of the avian brain. However, many aspects of crocodilian neurobiology remain unknown. In this paper, we address an important knowledge gap as there are no published studies of cerebellar connections in any crocodilian species. We used injections of retrograde tracers into the cerebellum of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) to describe for the first time the origin of climbing and mossy fiber inputs. We found that inputs t

Blockade of 5-Ht3 receptors in the septal area increases Fos expression in selected brain areas.

Serotonin is widely distributed throughout the brain and is involved in a multiplicity of visceral, cognitive and behavioral responses. It has been previously shown that injections of different doses of ondansetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, into the medial septum/vertical limb of the diagonal band complex (MS/vDB) induce a hypertensive response in rats. On the other hand, administration of m-CPBG, a 5-HT3 agonist, into the MS/vDB inhibits the increase of blood pressure during restraint stress. However, it is unclear which neuronal circuitry is involved in these responses. The present study

Morphology of the brain and sense organs in the snailfish Paraliparis devriesi: neural convergence and sensory compensation on the Antarctic shelf.

The Antarctic snailfish Paraliparis devriesi (Liparidae) is an epibenthic species, inhabiting depths of 500-650 m in McMurdo Sound. Liparids are the most speciose fish family in the Antarctic Region. We examine the gross morphology and histology of the sense organs and brain of P. devriesi and provide a phyletic perspective by comparing this morphology to that of four scorpaeniforms and of sympatric perciform notothenioids. The brain has numerous derived features, including well-developed olfactory lamellae with thick epithelia, large olfactory nerves and bulbs, and large telencephalic lobes.

Isolation and developmental expression of the amphibian homolog of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3.

Recent observations suggest that fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and their receptors are involved in the control of embryogenesis. Several FGF receptor genes have been identified so far and their expression is differentially regulated. As part of a continuing effort to analyse the differential expression of FGF receptors and their potential role during amphibian development, we have isolated a Pleurodeles homolog of FGF receptor 3 (FGFR-3), which we designated PFR-3 because of its highest homology to human FGFR-3 (75% overall identity). PFR-3 is a maternally derived mRNA. While a low level of

Recovery by mouse embryos following teratogenic exposure to ketosis.

Previous studies have shown that the ketone body D,L,-beta-hydroxybutyrate was teratogenic to mouse embryos exposed in culture during the period of neurulation. Inhibition of closure of the cranial and caudal neuropores was the most frequently occurring defect and these abnormalities were thought to be the forerunner of anencephaly and spina bifida, respectively. However, additional studies demonstrated that embryos could recover morphologically from these effects if the ketone body was removed from the culture medium and if the recovery period was of sufficient duration. In an attempt to defi

Developmental disturbances of the fetal brain in guinea-pigs caused by methylmercury.

Pregnant guinea-pigs of Hartley strain were orally administered methylmercuric chloride once at a dose of 7.5 mg Hg/animal (weighing 500-800 g) on one of days 21, 28, 35, 42 or 49 (3-7 weeks) of gestation. They were killed on day 63 (9 weeks) and their fetuses were removed. Both maternal and fetal blood, brain, liver and kidney, and fetal hair, urine, gastric content and amniotic fluid as well, were sampled for mercury analysis. The fetal brains were also examined pathologically. The maternal kidney contained mercury at a high concentration but the fetal kidney did not. The mercury concentrati

Afferent and efferent connections of cerebellar lobe C1 of the mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersi: an HRP study.

The corpus of the highly developed cerebellum of the weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersi is differentiated into four lobes, numbered C1 to C4. The present paper deals with the extrinsic connections of the rostralmost lobe C1. Relevant nuclei were studied in normal histological material and HRP injections were placed in lobe C1, the neighbouring pedunculus valvulae, and the brainstem. The largest number of afferents to lobe C1 originates from the nucleus lateralis valvulae, a large nucleus of tightly packed small cells in the dorsal midbrain tegmentum. In Gnathonemus this nucleus encompass
