A 14-week double blind study compared the efficacy of olanzapine to risperidone in reducing marijuana/cocaine craving and use in individuals with schizophrenia. The study consisted of three phases: a two-week assessment phase, a two-week cross-taper phase onto olanzapine/risperidone, and a ten-week period of maintenance on olanzapine/risperidone. The proportion of cocaine-positive urines decreases over time for both groups with a trend for a greater reduction for the olanzapine group compared to risperidone group. In the last six weeks, marijuana craving was more likely for the risperidone gro

PURPOSE: The use of risperidone in decreasing fecal smearing behavior as an expression of nonverbal aggression in a developmentally disabled adult is discussed.
SUMMARY: A 36-year-old Caucasian man had a history of fecal smearing when he did not get his way or was upset. The patient had profound mental retardation, had an IQ in the range of less than 20 to 25, and was nonverbal. For this patient, fecal smearing was not only a behavioral issue but also a medical concern because he was hepatitis B positive with noncarrier status. Serology also confirmed previous infection with hepatitis A. Risp

Priapism is a rare, but serious, side effect of psychotropic medications. Psychotropic medication-induced priapism is believed to be caused by the alpha-adrenergic antagonism of these medications. Among the atypical antipsychotics, cases of priapism or prolonged erection have been associated with clozapine, olanzapine, risperidone, and quetiapine. Risperidone has primarily serotonergic, dopaminergic, and alpha-adrenergic antagonist properties. It has one of the highest affinities for the alpha1-adrenergic receptor blockade among the atypical antipsychotics. To date, there are 17 case reports o

The therapeutic properties of typical antipsychotic drugs (APDs) such as haloperidol in schizophrenia treatment are mainly associated with their ability to block dopamine D2 receptors. This blockade is accompanied by side effects such as extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). Atypical APDs such as risperidone have superior therapeutic efficacy possibly due to their activity at multiple receptors (in particular 5-HT2A receptors). Although the risk of EPS is significantly lower in atypical than in typical APDs, it is not negligible. To investigate and compare the behavioural profile and EPS-asssociated

This case report describes a 19-year-old Caucasian woman who presented to a state psychiatric facility with symptoms of depression and auditory hallucinations. She was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, depressed type, and was treated with risperidone and sertraline. Soon after initiation of drug therapy, the patient developed galactorrhea and dysmenorrhea, and her prolactin level was 171.6ng/mL (normal level 2.8-29.2ng/mL in adult women). Upon discontinuation of risperidone, the prolactin level dropped to 17.2ng/mL within one week. The patient was treated with quetiapine and titrated up

BACKGROUND: Risperidone, a potent antagonist of both serotonergic (5HT2A) and dopaminergic D2 receptors is associated with hyperprolactinemia in adults and children. Chronically elevated prolactin levels in children with prolactinomas may be associated with arrested growth and development resulting in either delayed puberty or short stature. These possibilities stress the importance of developing a safe and effective approach to drug-induced hyperprolactinemia in youth. We report the successful treatment of risperidone-induced hyperprolactinemia with cabergoline in youth.
METHODS: We undertoo

OBJECTIVE: To describe the development of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) precipitated by an accidental overdose of risperidone in a 3.5-year-old boy.
CASE SUMMARY: The boy presented to the emergency department with bilateral upward eye gaze, jerky movements of his extremities, and motor restlessness following an accidental ingestion of a single 4-mg risperidone tablet. Decontamination with NaCl 0.9% lavage and activated charcoal with sorbitol was performed. His symptoms responded immediately to intravenous diphenhydramine (on 3 different occasions) during his first 9.5 hours of hospitalization

The objective of this study was twofold: (1) to describe the effects of risperidone on the quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) in schizophrenic patients and (2) to explore the relationships between EEG changes and clinical improvement. The subjects were nine male schizophrenic patients participating in a placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial (duration, 9 weeks) aimed to assess the effects of risperidone. The EEG effects of risperidone were compared with those of haloperidol. Nine haloperidol patients were selected from a separate treatment study that had a similar design and sele

Background: The primary treatment of schizophrenia is pharmacotherapy with antipsychotic agents, such as risperidone and paliperidone. Population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) modelling plays a crucial role in optimising therapy by predicting of plasma concentrations, therapeutic efficacy, and the risk of adverse effects using model informed precision dosing. Objectives: This systematic review examined the PopPK models of risperidone and paliperidone in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia based on the available scientific evidence. Methods: A systematic review of the health science databases was c

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the best therapeutic options to treat pain. Their use in combination with other drugs may broaden their applicability in analgesia if their ceiling and adverse effects are reduced. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharmacological interaction of two NSAIDs, paracetamol and meloxicam, with the antipsychotic drug risperidone in mice, in several experimental tests of nociceptive and inflammatory pain. Antinociception was assessed by dose-response curves to paracetamol and meloxicam before and after the i.p. administration of 0.5 mg/k
