Effect of a single application of silver diamine fluoride on root caries after 12 months in institutionalised older adults-A randomised clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has been shown to be highly effective against caries, in particular for arresting root surface caries and for dentine caries in primary teeth. SDF may complement fluoride varnish routines for treatment of root caries in nursing home residents. The aim of this randomised, single-blinded, placebo-controlled trial was to evaluate the additive effect of a single annual application of SDF for prevention and treatment of incipient root caries in older adult nursing home residents. METHOD: Four hundred older adult nursing home residents (≥70 years old) with a

Assessment of marginal bone loss, distal caries, and external root resorption in second molars adjacent to impacted third molars: a retrospective CBCT and panoramic study.

BACKGROUND: Impacted third molars (M3s) are frequently associated with pathological changes in adjacent second molars (M2s), including marginal bone loss (MBL), distal caries (DCs), and external root resorption (ERR). Accurate radiographic assessment and identification of risk factors are crucial for timely intervention and informed clinical decision-making. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between anatomical and positional risk factors of impacted M3s and pathological changes in adjacent M2s using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Additionally, the diagnostic performance o

Effects of CO2 laser irradiation on tooth-root cementum.

With the aging of the American population and the endemic problem of gingival recession, patients will inevitably suffer from greater exposure of root surfaces and therefore will be more likely to develop root caries. The treatment of root caries is often frustrating. Traditional biomaterials used for the restoration of enamel caries have been less than satisfactory when margins of a cavity are adjacent to cementum. Although topical fluoride gels, toothpastes, and rinses have been used to prevent or to inhibit the development of root caries, there is a problem of access to the proximal surface

The RCI revisited after 15 years: used, reinvented, modified, debated, and natural logged.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article is to review the status of the Root Caries Index (RCI) 15 years after it was first introduced in the dental literature as a method for the reporting of supragingival root lesions. This review focuses on the extent to which the RCI has been used by epidemiologic researchers, as well as on the issues concerning the RCI as a useful index that have been raised and debated in the literature by those epidemiologic researchers. METHODS: The debated points are categorized into six issues, including whether: (1) the RCI underestimates the prevalence of root cari

Histopathology of the initial lesion of the root surface: an in vitro study.

An acidified gel system was used to produce artificial caries lesions in root surfaces. Radiopaque surface layers were found with 47% of the lesions. Demineralized bodies of the lesion and mineralized zones of banding were seen in all lesions when examined by microradiography. Cementum and dentin seemed to respond to the acid attack in a similar manner. Although artificial root lesions did not simulate natural root caries entirely, the acidified gel system resulted in a reproducible method that might give insight into initial lesion formation on root surfaces. This technique may be used for st
