Repair of a root resorption lesion. A case report.

An extensive root surface lesion that presented both supra- and subgingival components was successfully treated with the use of glass ionomer cement to restore the lesion, and facilitate subsequent endodontic therapy and restoration. A coronally-positioned flap covered the repaired/restored lesion, approximately 6 mm x 10 mm in dimension. At 6 months following placement of the restoration, all but 1 mm of the restoration appeared covered, with probing depths <3 mm and no clinical signs of inflammation. Glass ionomer cement appears to be a viable, biocompatible material to restore subgingival r

An evaluation of root resorption incident to orthodontic intrusion.

A new radiographic method was developed for measuring changes in root length. With this technique, orthodontic intrusion was investigated as a potential cause of apical root resorption of maxillary incisors. The experimental group consisted of 17 patients with excessive overbite who were treated with a Burstone-type intrusion arch, which delivered a low level of force (about 15 gm per tooth). A control group was made up of 17 patients in full-arch fixed appliances who were randomly selected. After a period of approximately 4 months, the intrusion group had only slightly more root resorption th

Calcium hydroxide in the treatment of external root resorption.

A case is presented in which calcium hydroxide was used in endodontic treatment of external root resorption in a tooth with a necrotic pulp, during active orthodontic movement. A calcified deposit formed, filling a defect, and the tooth was subsequently obturated with gutta-percha. Thus, both types of therapy--endodontic and orthodontic--were performed simultaneously.

Replacement Resorption in Children: The Root of All Evil?

Replacement resorption is a common complicating factor in teeth that have been avulsed or intruded. Poor short- and long-term management of dental injuries in children can have a significant impact on a child's dental function, aesthetics and ultimately their quality of life. This article aims to provide clarity on the physiological process of replacement resorption, the clinical presentation and an overview of interceptive treatment that is available.

Root resorptions associated with canine retraction treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The hypothesis of this study was that multiple factors are dominant in causing external apical root resorption (EARR). The objective of this investigation was to better understand the clinical factors that may lead to EARR. METHODS: Maxillary cone-beam computed tomography scans of 18 subjects who were treated with bilateral canine retractions during orthodontics were used to calculate EARR. The subjects were treated using well-calibrated segmental T-loops for delivering a 124-cN retraction force and the moment-to-force ratio suitable for moving the canine under either translatio

Root resorption and orthodontic treatment. Review of the literature.

The aim of this paper was to provide a systematic review of the literature on the root resorption caused by orthodontic treatment. Original papers on this subject, published in English from January 2000 until December 2005, were located in the MEDLINE/PubMed database. Other sources were taken from the references of the selected papers. Root resorption is the most common sequela of the orthodontic treatment. It is an inflammatory process that leads to an ischemic necrosis localized in the periodontal ligament when the orthodontic force is applied. The onset and progression of root resorption ar

Root resorption and immune system factors in the Japanese.

The objective of this study was to determine whether there is an association between excessive root resorption and immune system factors in a sample of Japanese orthodontic patients. The records of 60 orthodontic patients (18 males, age 17.7 +/- 5.7 years; 42 females, age 16.4 +/- 6.0 years) and 60 pair-matched controls (18 males, age 15.9 +/- 4.5 years; 42 females, age 18.5 +/- 5.2 years) based on age, sex, treatment duration, and the type of malocclusion were reviewed retrospectively. The validity of our hypothesis was tested using the logistic regression analysis. The pretreatment records r

The repair of orthodontic root resorption: an ultrastructural study.

It has previously been shown by light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), that after force is terminated, repair of the orthodontic root resorption lacunae occur by deposition of new cementum. The ultrastructural details of the process are not well established. Since it has been hypothesized that a new barrier to protect the root surface is formed during the reparative phase, new information on this aspect of orthodontic root resorption may be valuable. The aim of the present investigation was, by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), to study in more detail the repair of orth

Radiographic observations on root resorption in the primary dentition.

In order to construct standardized charts for root resorption in the primary dentition of Japanese children, we investigated the stages of resorption (1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the root) based on the criterion of Fanning, et al. using 11,167 panoramic radiographs (5,759 of boys and 5,408 of girls). The following information was obtained. 1) The root resorption for a tooth on one side was the same as for its counterpart on the other side regardless of differences in sex or arch. 2) The average age for each root resorption stage was lower in girls than in boys regardless of differences in sex or arch.

Management of an avulsed tooth with severe root resorption.

Delayed replantation of an avulsed tooth with an open apex resulted in failure of revascularization, necrosis of the pulp and extensive external root resorption. Removal of the necrotic pulp and repeated intra-canal dressings of calcium hydroxide over a three year period arrested the inflammatory resorptive process. The process was replaced by replacement resorption leading to ankylosis and infra-occlusion of the affected tooth. As the tooth was asymptomatic, it was retained in the arch to act as a space maintainer. To improve aesthetics, the crown was recontoured using a light-cured resin.

Multiple Idiopathic Internal Root Resorption in an Adolescent: A Case R Multiple Idiopathic Internal Root Resorption in an Adolescent: A Case Report.

Internal root resorption (IRR) refers to a slow or rapid progressive resorption process that occurs in the pulp cavity of the tooth or the dentin of the root. IRR occurs as result of odontoclast action; in many cases, the pulp tissue exhibits chronic inflammation, and odontoblasts and predentin do not appear on the dentin wall near the pulp. Exact predisposing factors have not been clearly elucidated; therefore, it is difficult to identify reliable data on the prevalence of IRR because of its scarce occurrence and pathology. Reports have indicated that IRR is more common in the primary than in

A review of cone beam computed tomography for the diagnosis of root resorption associated with impacted canines, introducing an innovative root resorption scale.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to review all cases referred for cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to the department of dental radiology at the Leeds Dental Institute to aid diagnosis of root resorption associated with impacted canines. We aimed to establish if referral for and reporting of these CBCT assessments were in compliance with current guidelines. In addition, we introduced a new and innovative tool to aid reporting of CBCT images of root resorption associated with an impacted tooth. All plain film radiographs taken before CBCT were reviewed to determine if root resorption was

Inhibition of prostanoid synthesis depresses alveolar bone resorption but enhances root resorption in the rat.

Tooth drift requires the deformation of the root socket and the adjustment of the other components of the attachment apparatus, namely, the periodontal ligament (PDL) and the cementum. Indomethacin (7.5 mg/kg/d), an inhibitor of prostanoid synthesis, provoked in rats a depression in the bone resorption effecting the deformation of the socket (Lasfargues and Saffar, Anat. Rec., 234:310-316, 1992). In the present paper we examined the consequence of this treatment both on the PDL and the root surface. After 3 days of treatment, when osteoclastic resorption was not yet disturbed, the root had bee

Assessment of Root Resorption and Root Shape by Periapical and Panoramic Radiographs: A Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: One of the common findings encountered by the clinician at the end of orthodontic treatment is the apical root resorption. Root resorption occurs to various degrees. A severe form of root resorption is characterized by shortening of root for more than 4 mm or more than one-third of the total tooth length. A low incidence rate of resorption is observed based on radiographic findings for the diagnosis of root resorption, panoramic radiography, and periapical radiography. Hence, we evaluated the accuracy of panoramic radiographic films for assessing the root resorption in comparison

Comparison of orthodontic root resorption of root-filled and vital teeth: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In this systematic review, the authors aimed to answer the following question: Do vital teeth differ in the level of external root resorption induced by means of orthodontic treatment compared with root-filled teeth? TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The search strategy was performed in 6 electronic databases and in gray literature for articles published until July 29, 2021. Two reviewers independently assessed potentially eligible studies according to the following criteria: studies that evaluated patients undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy and compared the mean difference in millimet

HDAC9-Mediated Pyroptosis Promotes Orthodontically Induced Inflammatory Root Resorption.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) is a common iatrogenic outcome of orthodontic treatment. Both epigenetic modifications and pyroptosis have demonstrated a certain role in OIIRR. This study aims to investigate whether epigenetic modifications regulate pyroptosis to be involved in OIIRR. METHOD: Rat model of OIIRR was established, and the periodontal tissues were utilized for H&E staining, TRAP staining, immunofluorescence, transcriptome sequencing, and RT-qPCR analysis. Human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (hPDLFs) were overexpressed with HD
