PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between tear function tests and impression cytology results and the clinical findings in ocular rosacea.
METHODS: Patients with a histopathologic and clinical diagnosis of acne rosacea were studied. Ocular examination consisted of best-corrected visual acuity measurement, slitlamp examination, tear break-up time (BUT), basal Schirmer test, and rose Bengal staining. Impression cytology was done two days later. Ocular findings and symptoms were checked and scored. Age-matched controls were assessed using the same parameters.

Autologous serum was supposed to be efficient in the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca and persistent epithelial defects. 14 of 24 eyes of patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca improved fluorescein and rose Bengal scores. 3 of 6 eyes with persistent epithelial defects healed completely after this treatment and 2 improved fluorescein and rose bengal scores. All patients had been unsuccessfully treated with conventional treatment. Allergic or immune adverse reactions were not present and economical benefit was appreciated by some patients with poor socioeconomic condition.

Various Tc-99m-labeled compounds have been suggested as replacements for [I-131] rose bengal for imaging of the hepatobiliary system. Among such compounds are Schiff's bases, which are tin-free Tc-chelates easily prepared by 30-min autoclaving of an equimolar mixture of pyridoxal and an amino acid at pH 8.5. We retrospectively examined the effect of punctal occlusion by Freeman silicone plug insertion on dry eye disorders in 17 patients. Patients met at least two of the following criteria: history consistent with dry eye, interpalpebral rose bengal staining, and elevated tear film osmolarity. Plug insertion significantly decreased tear film osmolarity. Rose bengal staining decreased in 75% of the eyes examined. There were no cases of postoperative epiphora. Punctal plug insertion is therapeutic for dry eye disease, but extrusion is a significant problem.

Photosensitizing compounds are eco-friendly promising organic dyes for managing insect pests without facing the risk of resistance. The studies covered 32 workers chronically exposed to CS2 and controls. In all subjects diethyldithiocarbamaturia was evaluated and J131 labelled Bengal Rouge decay half-time was determined. The studies indicated statistically significantly lower DDC excretion in CS2 exposed workers, as compared to controls. On the other hand no statistically significant differences were found at the Bengal rouge decay half--time in blood. The above studies suggest that the disulphuran metabolic route was impaired prior to the occurrence of the changes in liver blood flow of CS2 exposed workers.

Twenty-two eyes affected with keratoconjunctivitis sicca have been subjected to double trials using the double-blind randomized cross-over technique. PURPOSE: To study the demographics and estimate the prevalence of dry eye among elderly Americans.
METHODS: A population-based prevalence study was performed in 2,520 residents of Salisbury, Maryland, aged 65 years and older as of September 1993. The population was derived from the Health Care Financing Administration Medicare database. After completing a standardized questionnaire pertaining to dry eye symptoms, 2,420 subjects underwent Schirmer and rose bengal tests and anatomic assessment of the meibomian glands.

In 47 patients with gastric ulcer disease, the absorptive-excretive function of the liver after resection of the stomach was studied by means of bengal rosy radioactive (bengal-rose131I). All the patients examined demonstrated a decrease in the absorptive function of the liver, which was more pronounced in creation of Hofmeister-Finsterer anastomosis. In hepatography with the use of bengal-rose 131I, the insignificant disorders in the liver function were noted, which couldn't be detected by means of biochemical methods of investigation.

Vital dye staining has been used for over a century to assess the severity of ocular surface disease. Millipore filter imprints of conjunctiva in patients with conjunctival symptoms revealed a 'snake-like' appearance of the chromatin in nuclei of epithelial cells.
