Rotator cuff repair is one of the most common surgical procedures done in the shoulder. Traditionally, repair has required an open incision with release of a portion of the deltoid from the acromion. In the past decade, an arthroscopically-assisted, mini-open approach has gained popularity. This has been facilitated by advances in the use of arthroscopy. This trend toward a more minimally invasive approach has continued as arthroscopic techniques continue to improve and advance. An all-arthroscopic approach recently has been used for rotator cuff repairs. The arthroscopic approach offers sever

When pain or disability occurs after rotator cuff surgery, post-operative imaging is frequently performed. Post-operative complications and expected post-operative imaging findings in the shoulder are presented, with a focus on MRI, MR arthrography (MRA) and CT arthrography. MR and CT techniques are available to reduce image degradation secondary to surgical distortions of native anatomy and implant-related artefacts and to define complications after rotator cuff surgery. A useful approach to image the shoulder after surgery is the standard radiography, followed by MRI/MRA for patients with lo

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic complete rotator cuff tears are rare in the pediatric population. These injuries might be a result of shoulder dislocation or direct trauma experienced during contact sports (i.e., rugby, judo). The purpose of this study was to identify the epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of these injuries and assess the medium- and long-term outcomes following surgery, with return to sport as the primary endpoint.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic questionnaire was sent to all surgeons who were members of the French Shoulder and Elbow Society (SOFEC) and/or the French So

INTRODUCTION: In older patients we documented the incidence of additional injuries in shoulder dislocations in a non-randomised, prospective study and compared the results of conservative and of operative therapy of rotator cuff tears.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 1993 and 1999 a total of 87 patients were prospectively enrolled. In the case of documented tears of the rotator cuff in combination with symptoms persisting after conservative therapy patients were free to decide between surgical and conservative treatment. Patients were monitored for function, subjective stability, and satisfacti

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2013eng
The goal of this article is to consolidate the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery & Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) Upper Extremity Committee's (UEC's) current knowledge on rotator cuff disease and management, as well as highlight key unresolved issues. The rotator cuff is an anatomically complex structure important for providing glenohumeral function and stability as part of a closed chain system. Current consensus suggests rotator cuff injuries are most accurately diagnosed, at levels similar to diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging, with a combination of cuff- and imp

The rotator cuff, a vital group of tendons and muscles in the shoulder, is essential for stabilizing the joint and enabling a wide range of arm movements. Rotator cuff tears, common across all age groups, often cause significant pain and functional limitations. Rotator cuff repair surgery aims to alleviate pain, restore function, and improve quality of life. Recent advances, particularly in arthroscopic techniques, have enhanced surgical outcomes and shortened recovery times. Nevertheless, risks remain, including surgical site infections, tendon retears, stiffness, severe postoperative pain, a

BACKGROUND: We studied musculoskeletal diseases (MSD) and injuries among fishermen and seamen with focus on low back disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), rotator cuff syndrome and arthrosis.
METHODS: Cohorts of all male Danish seamen (officers and non-officers) and fishermen employed 1994 and 1999 with at least six months employment history were linked to the Occupational Hospitalisation Register. We calculated standardised incidence ratios (SIR) for the two time periods, using rates for the entire Danish workforce as a reference.
RESULTS: Among fishermen, we found high SIRs for knee art

Rotator cuff tears are a major cause of shoulder pain and restricted mobility, with the supraspinatus tendon being particularly susceptible to injury due to its biomechanical properties and vascular perfusion characteristics. Failure to achieve an accurate diagnosis and initiate timely treatment following a rotator cuff injury can result in progressive worsening of the condition, potentially leading to severe complications. In this report, we present a case of post-traumatic supraspinatus tendon injury. By comparing musculoskeletal ultrasound, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, and ultra resolution

Rotator cuff tears, particularly involving the supraspinatus muscle and/or tendon, are highly prevalent among individuals engaged in repetitive shoulder motions. Occupations demanding constant and repetitive shoulder movements are especially susceptible to rotator cuff injuries, potentially leading to prolonged joint wear and tear and an increased likelihood of joint replacement. Considering the impact of social determinants of health, including access to healthcare and socioeconomic status, it is imperative to explore conservative treatment modalities that alleviate financial burdens and redu

Augmentation materials for rotator cuff tears, such as small intestine submucosa (SIS), have been used with the goal of improving outcome. Knowledge is limited on the use of SIS in animal models of acute and chronic rotator cuff tears. We hypothesized that the use of SIS in the surgical management of full thickness supraspinatus tears would improve histologic and biomechanical properties. Results show temporal improvements in several histologic parameters. Both acute and chronic injuries repaired with SIS have similar and increased mechanical properties respectively, compared to those repaired

Traumatic anterior dislocation of the shoulder is often associated with anterior glenoid fracture or bankart injury. It can also be associated with rotator cuff injury, humeral greater tuberosity fracture, or brachial plexus injury. However, there are few clinical reports of all the above-mentioned injuries at the same time. We report a case of the left "Shoulder terrible tetrad." After closed reduction of the left shoulder dislocation, we performed one-stage arthroscopic massive rotator cuff repair (Chinese-Way technique) and anchor repair of the bony bankart injury. After 2 years follow-up,

To evaluate the efficacy of arthroscopic techniques in determining the potential reparability of complete rotator cuff tears, a clinical investigation was performed. The parameters of tear size measurement, tendon quality, tendon mobility, and suture anchor placement were evaluated. These parameters were determined using both arthroscopic and open surgical technique. No statistically significant differences were noted when the arthroscopic findings were compared with the findings at open rotator cuff repair. Arthroscopic techniques can reliably assess rotator cuff tear size, tendon quality, te

Rotator cuff disorders are considered to be among the most common causes of shoulder pain and disability encountered in both primary and secondary care. The general pathology of subacromial impingment generally relates to a chronic repetitive process in which the conjoint tendon of the rotator cuff undergoes repetitive compression and micro trauma as it passes under the coracoacromial arch. However acute traumatic injuries may also lead to this condition. Diagnosis remains a clinical one, however advances in imaging modalities have enabled clinicians to have an increased understanding of the p

Tendon transfers represent a reconstructive option for irreparable rotator cuff tears and certain neurologic deficiencies. Arthroscopically assisted lower trapezius tendon (aLTT) transfer using Achilles tendon allograft is effective in restoring external rotation and relieving excessive loading on the teres minor. It has shown good results in patients with brachial plexus injuries and posterosuperior irreparable rotator cuff tears. Isolated infraspinatus musculotendinous tears present distinct characteristics compared with other rotator cuff tears, as these lesions cause rapid atrophy and sign

Arthroscopy has improved our diagnostic assessment of rotator cuff disease, especially in understanding patterns of articular surface partial-thickness tears. Arthroscopic subacromial decompression is a proven and reliable alternative to open acromioplasty. Despite continued controversy, most partial-thickness rotator cuff tears may be satisfactorily treated by arthroscopic debridement and decompression. The role for debridement and decompression without repair for full-thickness rotator cuff tears seems less than initially suggested, as several recent independent studies have documented resul

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears after anterior shoulder instability are more common in patients >40 years of age and rare in younger patients where shoulder instability is most common. Although infrequent, little data exist on the evaluation of combined labral and rotator cuff tears in athletes.
INDICATIONS: Combined rotator cuff and labral tears in the young patient population have a high risk of recurrent instability and require unique intraoperative and postoperative considerations. This patient is a Division 1 collegiate wrestler who sustained a 360° labral and full-thickness rotator cuff

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff repair often results in significant pain postoperatively, the cause of which is undetermined. Purpose/Hypothesis: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between rotator cuff tear area and postoperative pain in patients who had undergone arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. We hypothesized that larger tears would be more painful because of elevated repair tension at 1 week postoperatively but that smaller tears would be more painful because of a greater healing response, especially from 6 weeks postoperatively.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence

CONTEXT: Rotator cuff tendinopathy is one of the most frequently reported shoulder injuries in athletes of overhead sports. Abnormal scapular kinematics has been proposed as one of the contributing factors of rotator cuff tendinopathy in overhead athletes.
OBJECTIVES: To review the literature on 3-dimensional scapular kinematics in overhead athletes with and without rotator cuff tendinopathy.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Electronic databases (Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Embase, and PubMed) were searched from inception to September 2017. In addition, the reference lists of the articles that met the i

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCT) is a common clinical diagnosis of pain and dysfunction in the shoulder. In conjunction with clinical tests, diagnostic ultrasound (US) is beneficial in the diagnosis of RCT through its ability to visualise tendon structural change. However, there is currently no standardised method to assess RCT with US.
AIMS/PURPOSE: The primary aim of this systematic review was to identify the common US parameters used to diagnose RCT with US. The secondary aim was to determine whether a nominal or ordinal scale should be used to diagnose RCT with US.
METHODS: A
