1. The present paper reports the effects on rumen fermentation and plasma metabolites and hormones of giving fixed rations of hay and high-cereal concentrates at different meal frequencies to lactating cows. In Expt 1 the total ration was given in two and twenty-four meals daily and in Expts 2-4 the concentrates were given in two and five or six meals and the hay in two meals daily. The diets contained 600-920 g concentrates/kg. 2. In Expt 1, minimum rumen pH was higher but mean pH was lower when cows were given their ration in twenty-four meals/d rather than two meals/d. 3. In all the experim

Bacteria from the bovine rumen capable of reducing trans-aconitate to tricarballylate were enriched in an anaerobic chemostat containing rumen fluid medium and aconitate. After 9 days at a dilution rate of 0.07 h, the medium was diluted and plated in an anaerobic glove box. Three types of isolates were obtained from the plates (a crescent-shaped organism, a pleomorphic rod, and a spiral-shaped organism), and all three produced tricarballylate in batch cultures that contained glucose and trans-aconitate. In glucose-limited chemostats (0.10 h), trans-aconitate reduction was associated with a dec

Rumen and abomasal cannulas for sheep and an instrument that facilitates rapid insertion of the cannulas were developed. The cannulas were made from epoxy-filled polyurethane and were supported by outer support rings held in place by nuts screwed onto the threaded tops of the cannula barrels. The insertion device was used to pull the cannula through a separately made incision in the abdominal wall and to stretch the skin and other tissues over a cone and onto the barrel of the cannula, thus ensuring a tight fit and the formation of a ring of scar tissue that virtually eliminated digesta leakag

The effect of the replacement of 50, 60 and 80% of proteins in diet by dried rumen contents on glutamate dehydrogeanse activity (EC 1.4.1.3) in the kidneys, liver, and caecum tissue and contents was studied in broilers. The liver and caecum tissue did not show any significant changes in the activity of glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) in dependence on the concentration of rumen contents in the diet. A statistically significant drop of GLDH activity was ascertained in the kidneys, the drop being the most marked at a 65% concentration of rumen contents in the diet. Similarly, a statistically signi

High-concentrate (HC) diets in intensive sheep fattening frequently induce metabolic disorders and compromise the lipid nutritional quality of meat. Although thymol exhibits metabolic benefits, its role in regulating rumen fermentation and muscle lipid deposition remains unclear. In this study, lambs fed an HC diet were supplemented with different levels of thymol, and growth performance, rumen microbiota, volatile fatty acids (VFA), as well as metabolomic and fatty acid profiles of the longissimus lumborum were systematically analyzed. Thymol supplementation enhanced average daily gain (ADG),

BACKGROUND: Yeast culture (YC) supplementation is widely adopted to mitigate rumen pH depression and alleviate the inhibition of fiber degradation under starch-rich diets. Yet, the underlying microbial mechanisms, particularly how yeast culture orchestrates fibrolytic communities and affects metabolic hydrogen flow in the rumen, remain a critical knowledge gap. Accordingly, elucidating the microbial basis by which yeast culture modulates fiber degradation and hydrogen utilization under starch-rich diets is of both theoretical and practical importance.
METHODS: We conducted a study with growin

The effects of rumen-protected methionine (RPM) in Holstein cows fed TMR are well documented, but limited information is available on the responses to RPM in grazing dairy cows. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of RPM supplementation on milk and solids yields, DMI, feeding behavior, and plasma AA of grazing F1 Holstein × Gyr cows. We hypothesized that AA balancing with RPM would increase milk protein yield and ECM. Twenty-four multiparous cows (100 ± 55 DIM, 31.0 ± 4.8 kg milk/d, 590 ± 47 kg BW) were assigned to a randomized complete block design, blocked by milk yield and DIM. Within

This study aimed to determine whether urinary pH can be used to predict metabolic acidosis in sheep with acute rumen lactic acidosis (ALRA). ALRA was induced by administering sucrose intraruminally to 40 apparently healthy sheep. Venous blood and urine samples were collected before induction (‒18 h) and prior to treatment (0 h) to measure blood pH, base excess (BE), and urinary pH. Associations between urinary and blood pH, and between urinary pH and BE, were examined using Pearson correlation and linear regression. Blood and urinary pH were positively correlated (r = 0.633; P < 0.001), as wer

AIMS: The effect of Perilla frutescens seed oil (PSO) on an in vitro rumen microbial ecosystem was evaluated by integrating fermentation measurements, microbiome profiling, metagenomics, and untargeted metabolomics.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Rumen inoculum was incubated for 24 h with a control TMR substrate (CK), TMR supplemented with 23.7 mg of Perilla seeds per bottle (PS), or TMR supplemented with 8.5 μL of Perilla seed oil per bottle (PSO), with the PS and PSO treatments providing equivalent amounts of seed oil. Fermentation kinetics and volatile fatty acids were measured, and microbial and me

The objective of this experiment was to estimate the bioavailability (BA) of rumen-protected (RP) His, RPLys, and 2 RPMet products using 3 in vivo methods: area under the curve (AUC), plasma dose-response (PDR), and fecal free AA (FFAA) methods. We used 8 rumen-cannulated cows in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square experiment with 16-d periods. Treatments were (1) abomasal infusion of water (control), (2) abomasal infusion of free His, Lys, and Met (FAA), (3) administration of RPHis + RPLys + RPMet1 (rumen-protected methionine protected with ethyl cellulose; RPAA1), and (4) administration of RPHis

Healthy mammary glands are essential for high-quality milk production in the dairy industry. The relationship between somatic cell counts (SCCs), rumen fermentation, and microbiota interactions remains unclear. This study integrated physiological indicators, high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and metagenomics data analysis to investigate the mechanisms linking rumen microbes and mastitis and to evaluate the changes in milk production and serum cytokine levels in cows with low (L-SCC) and high (H-SCC) somatic cell counts. Compared with the L-SCC group, the H-SCC group exhibited significa

Rumen cud transfaunation re-establishes rumen micro environment and improves fermentation in recipient animals affected with digestive disorders. Preserving rumen cud or fluid will increase its availability for the treatment of rumen fermentation disorders, without having to maintain donor animals. Rumen fluid collected from healthy goats, fed standard ration having roughage 70% and concentrate 30%, was lyophilized (prefreezing -80 °C, 48 h; lyophilization -45 °C, 32 h) using 5% glycerol as cryoprotectant. The 16 S metagenome analysis of the lyophilized rumen fluid (LRF) revealed an abundance

Heat stress events in dairy cows are associated with behavioral and physiological changes such as seeking shade, increased respiration rate and body temperature, reduced milk production, and psychological distress. Knowledge of the relationship between weather and animal responses to heat stress enables automated alerts using forecast weather, aiding early provision of shade or other mitigation practices. While numerous heat stress indices for cattle have been developed, these have limitations for cows exposed to wind and solar radiation (i.e., predominantly grazing outdoors or managed on past

There is evidence that supplementing methionine has positive effects on uterine environment, oocyte quality and embryo development in cattle. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate reproductive traits of cows supplemented with rumen-protected methionine (RPM) during early to mid-lactation in comparison with an untreated control group (CON). An additional focus was on the effect of puerperal diseases on reproductive performance parameters in RPM-supplemented group MET and in CON. A total of 1,709 multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows were enrolled in this field trial conducted on a comm

Japanese Black cattle (Wagyu) are raised under a distinctive long-term fattening system designed to enhance intramuscular fat (marbling) and carcass value. Because most metabolizable energy and many metabolic signals in ruminants derive from rumen fermentation products, variation in rumen microbial ecology and fermentation chemistry can extend to systemic metabolism and ultimately influence meat quality traits. Recent work in Japanese Black steers has provided a structured, multi-layered dataset spanning rumen fermentation characteristics, blood metabolites and hormones, liver transcriptome pr

In brief: Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbial metabolites can influence male fertility, but how rumen microbiota regulate spermatogenesis in ruminants remains unclear. This study demonstrates that N-carbamoylglutamate promotes bull spermatogenesis through a rumen microbiota-vitamin B6 axis associated with Paraprevotella. Abstract: N-Carbamoylglutamate (NCG), a functional analog of the arginine precursor, shows strong potential in enhancing spermatogenesis in bulls. In this study, dietary NCG supplementation significantly increased sperm density and motility in XiangXi yellow bulls,

Domestic goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) are important producers of milk, meat, and hair. The early weaned goats may face fundamental issues related to the incomplete rumen development to deal with the transition from liquid feeds into solid feeds. Therefore, the present review focuses on the nutritional strategies and feeding methods to enhance the proper rumen morphological development, fermentation efficiency and microbiota structure in young goats. The enhanced rumen development caused by these nutritional strategies can have lasting positive effects on their overall growth performance and h

The areas of the Mount Aso grasslands in Kumamoto, Japan, are the primary location for the breeding of the Kumamoto strain of Japanese Brown cattle (JBRK). Although Aso limonite, deposited by volcanic ash and magma, has been commonly fed to pregnant JBRK in this area, the mechanisms of its salutary effects on pregnant JBRK have not yet been elucidated. Approximately 100 days before the expected day of calf delivery, seven JBRK (four supplemented with limonite and three controls without limonite) were assigned to this study, from which a buccal swab was collected at the highest rumination every
