Prior voluntary wheel running attenuates neuropathic pain.

Exercise is known to exert a systemic anti-inflammatory influence, but whether its effects are sufficient to protect against subsequent neuropathic pain is underinvestigated. We report that 6 weeks of voluntary wheel running terminating before chronic constriction injury (CCI) prevented the full development of allodynia for the ∼3-month duration of the injury. Neuroimmune signaling was assessed at 3 and 14 days after CCI. Prior exercise normalized ipsilateral dorsal spinal cord expression of neuroexcitatory interleukin (IL)-1β production and the attendant glutamate transporter GLT-1 decrease,

Modified technique for laparoscopic running vesicourethral anastomosis.

INTRODUCTION: A vesicourethral anastomosis is the most challenging and time-consuming step of radical prostatectomy. In 2003, van Velthoven introduced his own technique of connecting the bladder neck with the membranous urethra, which has remained the most popular method since. Despite being effective, this method is time consuming and is not free from the risk of complications. AIM: Here we describe our technique for laparoscopic vesicourethral anastomosis using a running suture as an alternative to the traditional approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The vesicourethral anastomosis is created us

Laparoscopic running urethrovesical anastomosis with posterior fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a minimally invasive approach for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. The most technically demanding and time-consuming part of this procedure is the urethrovesical anastomosis. Here we describe our technique for the urethrovesical anastomosis with a posterior fixation, using a running suture with two monofilament absorbable sutures. TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The first step comprises two X-shaped stitches placed in the posterior wall of the anastomosis (at 7 and 5 o'clock). Each suture is independently tied, leaving the knot (and con

Mechanical comparison of barefoot and shod running.

In order to further compare shod versus barefoot running, 35 subjects ran two bouts of 4 minutes at 3.33 m x s(-1) on a treadmill dynamometer. Parameters were measured on about 60 consecutive steps. Barefoot showed mainly lower contact and flight time (p < 0.05), lower passive peak (1.48 versus 1.70 body weight, p < 0.05), higher braking and pushing impulses (p < 0.05), and higher pre-activation of triceps surae muscles (p < 0.05) than shod. It was concluded that when performed on a sufficient number of steps, barefoot running leads to a reduction of impact peak in order to reduce the high mec

Common overuse running injuries: diagnosis and management.

Running injuries are primarily caused by overuse due to training errors (i.e., running too far, too fast, too soon). A stress fracture should always be considered in a runner with pain, because long-term morbidity may occur if this injury is not recognized. The history and physical examination are usually sufficient to diagnose an overuse injury. Runners should be instructed to increase their mileage gradually in increments of 10 percent or less each week, to wear proper running shoes and to perform stretching and strengthening exercises for the lower extremities on a regular basis. In additio

Gastric lesions secondary to long-distance running.

Gastrointestinal disorders have been reported during long-distance running. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of prolonged exercise on the upper digestive tract. Seven subjects were submitted to a standard endoscopic examination of the upper digestive tract before and after long-distance running (range 18-50 km). Mucosal biopsy specimens were taken during all endoscopies. After running, all runners had histologically pathological features in the stomach. Vascular lesions were present in the chorion in six subjects after running, with the intensity of the lesions ranging fro

Effects of running on intervertebral disc height.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of food anaphylaxis due to masked allergens has increased within the last 10 years. Contamination of manufactured products by food allergens is a key concern for food industries. OBJECTIVE: To determine quantities eliciting reactions in patients who have an IgE-dependent food allergy, thanks to standardized oral provocation tests. To evaluate the subsequent levels of sensitivity required for the detection tests of allergens for egg, peanut, milk and sesame. METHODS: Prick-in-prick tests, Cap system RAST, and single or double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges

Determining predictor variables for running-related pain.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether specific predictor variables exist for particular running-related injuries. Data on 134 patients with running-related injuries were evaluated to establish the factors that were associated with specific pain sites. Patient data consisted of a brief running history and measurements of 72 anatomical variables that have been cited in the literature as predisposers to running-related injuries. The descriptive statistics indicated certain associations of variables with each pain group. A factor analysis was used to eliminate multicollinearity and to

Treadmill-based assessment of running-specific prostheses in steady and accelerated running: a case study with a Paralympic medalist.

Running-specific prostheses (RSPs) enable individuals with lower-limb amputation to compete in Paralympic running disciplines. In a high-level sports context, optimal RSP tuning based on biomechanical parameters is essential to enhance running performance. Although on-track assessment is considered the gold standard, its high financial and logistical demands make treadmill-based setups valuable alternatives. Therefore, this single-case study aimed to present a method for assessing steady-state running (SSR) and resisted acceleration running (RAR) in an amputee athlete, comparing different RSP

Changes in running economy and attainable maximal oxygen consumption in response to prolonged running: The impact of training status.

During prolonged running at moderate-to-high intensity, running economy (RE) deteriorates and attainable maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) decreases. Whether these changes appear similarly in trained and untrained runners exercising at the same relative intensity is not clear. We recruited 10 trained runners (TR) and 10 active adults (AA), and compared RE and attainable VO2max before and after 1 h of running at 70% of VO2max. Submaximal VO2 increased more (p = 0.019) in AA (0.20 ± 0.13 L min-1) than in TR (0.07 ± 0.05 L min-1). Attainable VO2max decreased in AA (-0.21 ± 0.15 L min-1, p = 0.0

See how they run: Characteristics of 114,324 runs from 227 runners with and without a history of knee surgery.

This study aimed to describe and compare the characteristics of runs performed by a cohort of male and female runners, with and without a history of knee surgery. Data on frequency, distance, pace and cadence were collected from 227 runners (45% females, 48% knee surgery) using smartwatches over 4 years (n = 114,324 runs). Generalised mixed models compared running characteristics between sex and knee surgery strata. Runners typically performed 2-5 runs per week between 3.5-20 km in length, 4-7 min/km pace, at 160-180 steps/min cadence. Comparing group averages, males ran faster (0.78 fewer min

The influence of sex on activity in voluntary wheel running, forced treadmill running, and open field testing in mice.

Physical activity is commonly used for both measuring and treating dysfunction. While preclinical work has been historically biased towards males, the inclusion of both males and females is gaining popularity. With the increasing inclusion of both sexes, it is imperative to determine sex differences in common behavioral assays. This was a secondary analysis of healthy naïve mice to determine baseline sex differences in three activity assays: voluntary wheel running (32 mice), forced treadmill running (178 mice), and open field (88 mice). In voluntary wheel running, females showed greater dista

What Is the Effect of Breast Size on Running Economy and Upper Body Biomechanical Factors Contributing to Running Economy?

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: This study investigated the effect of breast size on running economy, breast displacement, total body center of mass excursion, trunk angular velocity, and exercise-induced breast pain at different running velocities. METHODS: Fifteen female recreational runners with a small breast size (volume range: 90-338 mL per breast) and 15 female recreational runners with a medium-large breast size (volume range: 351-1029 mL per breast) were matched for age and body mass index. Kinematic and oxygen consumption (V̇O 2 ) data were collected while participants completed an 8-min trea

Partial-Body Cryotherapy Exposure 2 Hours Prior to a Shuttle Run Does Not Enhance Running Performance.

PURPOSE: To determine whether a single acute preexercise bout of partial-body cryotherapy (PBC) enhanced maximal-effort shuttle run performance, salivary enzyme concentration, and self-reported performance readiness. METHODS: A total of 18 male rugby league players (age = 20.1 [0.5] y; mass = 91.4 [12.4] kg) were exposed to either PBC for 3 minutes at -136°C (1°C) or a control condition prior to a continuous, high-intensity 6 × 40-m shuttle run test. Passive saliva samples were collected to determine salivary alpha amylase (sAA) concentration. Perceived performance readiness and well-being qu

Differences in running kinematics and stride-to-stride variability between self-paced treadmill and overground running on two surfaces.

Treadmills are widely used in running research, yet it remains unclear how closely self-paced treadmill running reflects overground running. To date, treadmill-overground comparisons have been limited to fixed-speed conditions. This study compared self-paced treadmill running with overground running on hard and soft surfaces. Twenty-one physically active young adults performed running trials under three conditions: self-paced treadmill, overground soft surface, and overground hard surface. Mean values and stride-to-stride variability were analyzed for kinematic variables, and time-continuous s
