Diene hydroaminomethylation via ruthenium-catalyzed C-C bond forming transfer hydrogenation: beyond carbonylation.

Under the conditions of ruthenium catalyzed transfer hydrogenation using 2-propanol as terminal reductant, 1,3-dienes engage in reductive C-C coupling with formaldimines obtained in situ from 1,3,5-tris(aryl)-hexahydro-1,3,5-triazines to form homoallylic amines. Deuterium labelling studies corroborate a mechanism involving reversible diene hydroruthenation to form an allylruthenium complex that engages in turn-over limiting imine addition. Protonolysis of the resulting amidoruthenium species releases product and delivers a ruthenium alkoxide, which upon β-hydride elimination closes the catalyt

Ruthenium polypyridyl squalene derivative: a novel self-assembling lipophilic probe for cellular imaging.

Transition metal complexes provide a promising avenue for designing new therapeutic and diagnostic agents. In particular, ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes are useful for studying cellular uptake, due to their easy synthesis and unique photophysical properties. Dyes are frequently combined with material substrates to modulate their properties, enhance stability, reduce toxicity, and improve delivery. A novel Ru polypyridyl complex linked to a derivative of the natural lipid squalene (Ru-BIPPBI-hx-SQ) is described. Using the solvent displacement method, Ru-BIPPBI-hx-SQ easily self-assembles i

Nitric oxide photorelease from hydrogels and from skin containing a nitro-ruthenium complex.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous molecule that has specific functions dictated by its localization and its kinetics of release. As NO-donors have a range of potential uses in the skin, much attention has been paid to the development of topical NO delivery systems. The aim of this work was to study the release rate and the skin penetration of the NO-donor cis-[Ru(NO(2))(bpy)(2)(4-pic)](+) from different gel formulations and their potential as topical NO delivery systems under light stimuli. Among the formulations developed, the anionic gel retarded the nitro-ruthenium complex diffusion and also o

Encapsulation of ruthenium nitrosylnitrate and DNA purines in nanostructured sol-gel silica matrices.

The interactions between DNA purines (guanine and adenine) and the ruthenium complex Ru(NO)(NO(3))(3) were studied within nanostructured silica matrices prepared by a two-step sol-gel process. By infrared analysis in diffuse reflectance mode, it was proved that encapsulation induces a profound modification on the complex, whereas guanine and adenine preserve their structural integrity. The complex undergoes nitrate ligand exchange and co-condenses with the silica oligomers, but the nitrosyl groups remain stable, which is an unusual behavior in Ru nitrosyl complexes. In turn, the doping molecul

Electrogenerated chemiluminescence DNA biosensor based on hairpin DNA probe labeled with ruthenium complex.

A highly selective electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for the detection of target single-strand DNA (ss-DNA) was developed using hairpin DNA as the recognition element and ruthenium complex as the signal-producing compound. The ECL-based DNA biosensor was fabricated by self-assembling the ECL probe of thiolated hairpin DNA tagged with ruthenium complex on the surface of a gold electrode. In the absence of target ss-DNA, the ECL probe immobilized on the surface of the electrode was in the folded configuration in which its termini were held in close proximity to the electrode, an

Water-soluble hydroxyalkylated phosphines: examples of their differing behaviour toward ruthenium and rhodium.

The reaction of P(CH2OH)3 (I) and P(C6H5)(CH2OH)2 (II) with RuCl3 in methanol eliminates two equivalents of formaldehyde to yield the mixed tertiary and secondary phosphine complexes all-trans-[RuCl2(P(CH2OH)3)2(P(CH2OH)2H)2] (1) and [RuCl2(P(C6H5)(CH2OH)2)2(P(C6H5)(CH2OH)H)2] (2), respectively. There is a high degree of hydrogen-bonding interactions between the hydroxymethyl groups in 1 and 2, although the phenyl groups of the latter reduce the extent of the network compared to 1. The generation of these mixed secondary and tertiary phosphine complexes is unprecedented. Under the same reactio

Ruthenium red antagonism of capsaicin-induced vascular changes in the rat nasal mucosa.

Mechanisms of capsaicin-induced vascular changes were examined in the nasal mucosa of anesthetized adult rats. Intra-arterial infusions of capsaicin at doses of 20-100 pmol/min into the external carotid artery resulted in a dose-dependent increase in nasal blood flow as assessed by laser-Doppler flowmetry. Intra-arterial infusion of ruthenium red (RR, 2.5-10 mumol) prior to the administration of capsaicin significantly inhibited the capsaicin-evoked response. The technique of vascular labelling was used to examine nasal mucosal vascular permeability. Intravenous administration of colloidal sil

Zwitterionic-to-cationic ruthenium carbazole complexes: structure and selective hydroboration of quinolines and pyridines.

We report the synthesis of the Ru(II) zwitterionic complexes [MeRu(η6-carbazole-N-EMe2Cl)(PPh3)2] (E = Al, Ru-1; Ga, Ru-2) via a one-pot reaction of RuCl2(PPh3)3 with carbazole in the presence of excess group 13 trialkyl reagents (AlMe3 or GaMe3). Structural characterization confirms η6-coordination of ruthenium to a single fused aryl ring of the carbazole framework. The zwitterionic character of Ru-1 and Ru-2 results from deprotonation of the carbazole N-H bond to form an anionic amido fragment coordinated to a group 13 center, while the cationic Ru(II) center is supported by two phosphines,

The Mechanism of Ruthenium Oxide Catalyzed Electroless Etching of Silicon in Oxidizing HF Solution.

While metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) or metal-catalyzed electroless etching of silicon in oxidizing HF solutions typically employs noble metals as catalysts, this work investigates oxide-catalyzed chemical etching (OACE) using RuO2 to induce localized silicon etching in aqueous H2O2-HF solutions. RuO2 particles confine the reaction to localized sites. The formation of Ru2O3 during etching suggests that RuO2 injects holes into silicon and is simultaneously reduced to Ru2O3. The oxidized silicon is locally dissolved in aqueous HF solution, and the pores are generated. A cyclic redox mech

Ruthenium-Based Defective MOFs as Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide to Formate.

The hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to formic acid has attracted considerable interest for carbon utilization and hydrogen storage. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring open coordination sites and tunable pore structures, offer unique advantages for heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report the catalytic performance of a series of defect-engineered Ru-MOF catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO2 to formate. The catalysts were synthesized by partially substituting the organic linker with 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PYDC) to introduce controllable defect sites. Among the series, the defe

Water-Dispersible Ruthenium Nanocatalyst for Carbonyl Reduction With D2 or T2 in Aqueous Media.

The growing development of biologics as therapeutic agents urges the development of efficient catalytic methods enabling the direct incorporation of hydrogen isotopes from readily available and easy-to-handle isotopic sources in aqueous media. In this context, we report the synthesis and characterization of water-dispersible ruthenium nanoparticles stabilized by the commercially available phosphine ligand sSPhos, and their application as catalysts for carbonyl reduction reactions under low-pressure deuterium and tritium atmospheres. Using this nanocatalyst, a broad range of functionalized deut

The Synergy between a Silver-Ruthenium Antimicrobial and aminoglycosides is based on severe macromolecular damage.

The rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens, including uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), highlights the urgent need for alternative treatment strategies to restore antibiotic efficacy. The silver-ruthenium antimicrobial AGXX® exerts potent bactericidal effects through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS); however, its potential synergy with antibiotics has not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we show that sublethal concentrations of AGXX® strongly enhance aminoglycoside-mediated killing across a diverse panel of Gram-negative and Gram-positive MDR clinical isol

Cardiovascular Effects of Ruthenium Complexes: A Potential Therapeutic Tool in Hypertension and Myocardial Injury.

Ruthenium complexes stand out as an excellent alternative in the field of organometallic chemistry with applications in various areas. Recently, in cardiovascular pharmacology, there has been a growing interest in investigating complexes that modulate the Nitric Oxide (NO) pathway without necessarily and directly donating NO. NO has a proven vasodilatory and cardioprotective effect, and it is known that reduced levels are associated with an increased risk of CardioVascular Diseases (CVD). Studies suggest that ruthenium complexes significantly contribute to the treatment of CVD pathophysiology

Arene-Ruthenium(II) Complexes with Carbothiamidopyrazoles as a Potential Alternative for Antibiotic Resistance in Human.

To meet the demand for alternatives to commonly used antibiotics, this paper evaluates the antimicrobial potential of arene-ruthenium(II) complexes and their salts, which may be of value in antibacterial treatment. Their antimicrobial activity (MIC, MBC/MFC) was examined in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris and Candida albicans and compared with classic antibiotics used as therapeutics. Selected arene-ruthenium(II) complexes were found to have synergistic effects with oxacillin and vancomycin against

To cage or to be caged? The cytotoxic species in ruthenium-based photoactivated chemotherapy is not always the metal.

In metal-based photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT), two photoproducts are generated by light-triggered photosubstitution of a metal-bound ligand: the free ligand itself and an aquated metal complex. By analogy with cisplatin, the aquated metal complex is usually presented as the biologically active species, as it can typically bind to DNA. In this work, we show that this qualitative assumption is not necessarily valid by comparing the biological activity, log P, and cellular uptake of three ruthenium-based PACT complexes: [Ru(bpy)2(dmbpy)]2+, [Ru(bpy)2(mtmp)]2+, and [Ru(Ph2phen)2(mtmp)]2+. Ruthenium complex with benznidazole and nitric oxide as a new candidate for the treatment of chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease remains a serious medical and social problem in Latin America and is an emerging concern in nonendemic countries as a result of population movement, transfusion of infected blood or organs and congenital transmission. The current treatment of infected patients is unsatisfactory due to strain-specific drug resistance and the side effects of the current medications. For this reason, the discovery of safer and more effective chemotherapy is mandatory for the successful treatment and future eradication of Chagas disease. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We investigated the effect

A reversible competition colorimetric assay for the detection of biothiols based on ruthenium-containing complex.

A novel reversible colorimetric sensor, which based on a competitive ligation of Hg(2+) by thiols, cysteine (Cys) or glutathione (GSH), and thiocyanate (SCN) on the N3 dye (bis(4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine) dithiocyanato ruthenium (II)), was developed for the detection of biothiols. First, Hg(2+) ions coordinate to the sulfur atom of the dyes' SCN groups, and this interaction induces a change in color from red to yellow, owing to the formation of a complex of Hg(2+)-N3. Then, in the presence of biothiols, the red color of N3 is recovered concomitantly with the dissociation of the Hg(2+)-N3 c
