Aberrant brain activity during sad-happy emotional switching in adolescents with bipolar disorder: A functional MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with bipolar disorder (BD) experience rapid mood fluctuations and cognitive disturbance. However, the underlying neural mechanism for sad-happy emotional switching remains poorly understood in adolescents with BD. METHODS: We used an emotional Go/No-Go functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task paradigm to assess brain activity during the transition between sad and happy emotional states in 43 adolescents with BD and 18 age- and gender-matched healthy control (HC) participants. Neuroimaging data were analyzed using a general linear model with age and gender as c

Structural Analysis of the German Self-Report Questionnaire for Anxiety and Depression in People With Disorders of Intellectual Development (SAD-IE).

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders and depression are among the most common mental disorders in people with disorders of intellectual development (DID). As many symptoms are not directly observable, diagnoses should not be based solely on third-party assessment. The aim of the study was the development and structural analysis of a self-report questionnaire (SAD-IE) for anxiety and depression in people with DID. METHODS: Based on the specific diagnostic criteria of DM-ID-2, a trial version of the SAD-IE with 49 items was constructed in plain language. After contacting N = 233 institutions across al

"I'm not sad anymore, I'm proud to have such a child": The experiences of caregivers of dependents with cerebral palsy living in Greece.

BACKGROUND: People with cerebral palsy are largely dependent on their caregivers, who are most often members of their family. Caring for people with disabilities can be challenging as both dependents and caregivers face problems of social isolation and stigmatization. AIM: The aim of this study was to understand the experiences of caregivers of dependents with cerebral palsy in Greece. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study utilizing a descriptive phenomenological design. A purposive sample of 20 caregivers was employed and data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews. D

Prospectively assessed summer mood status in major depression, recurrent with seasonal pattern: Evidence for SAD's construct validity.

OBJECTIVE: Seasonal patterns are often undetectable in population-based depression studies, calling into question the existence of winter seasonal affective disorder (SAD). If SAD has construct validity, individuals with SAD should show spontaneous depression remission in the summer. Data are sparse on prospectively assessed summer mood status in confirmed SAD patients. METHOD: We conducted prospective summer followup of community adults who, the winter before, were diagnosed with Major Depression, Recurrent with Seasonal Pattern on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorder

Attentional biases for sad faces in offspring of mothers with a history of major depression: trajectories of change from childhood to adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Theorists have proposed that the way children process social-emotional information may serve as a mechanism of risk for the intergenerational transmission of depression. There is growing evidence that infants and children of mothers with a history of major depressive disorder (MDD) during the child's life exhibit attentional avoidance of sad faces, which has been proposed as an early emerging emotion regulation strategy. In contrast, there is clear evidence that at-risk and depressed adolescents and adults exhibit difficulty disengaging attention from sad faces. METHODS: Seeking t

Tau Cleavage Contributes to Cognitive Dysfunction in Strepto-Zotocin-Induced Sporadic Alzheimer's Disease (sAD) Mouse Model.

Tau cleavage plays a crucial role in the onset and progression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), a widespread neurodegenerative disease whose incidence is expected to increase in the next years. While genetic and familial forms of AD (fAD) occurring early in life represent less than 1%, the sporadic and late-onset ones (sAD) are the most common, with ageing being an important risk factor. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of streptozotocin (STZ)-a compound used in the systemic induction of diabetes due to its ability to damage the pancreatic β cells and to induce insulin resistance-mimics in r

Elated or sad mood induction affects the attention of patients with a bipolar disorder less than that of patients with a depressive disorder.

Introduction: The role of acute mood states as mediating factors in cognitive impairment in patients with mania or depression is not sufficiently clear. Similarly, the extent to which cognitive impairment is trait or state-specific remains an open question. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a mood-induction on attention in patients with an affective disorder. Methods: Twenty-two depressed bipolar patients, 10 manic bipolar patients, 17 with a depressive episode (MDE), and 24 healthy controls performed the Attention-Network-Test (ANT). In a within-participants des

Modulation of feedback processing by social context in social anxiety disorder (SAD)-an event-related potentials (ERPs) study.

The ability to learn from feedback, especially under social scrutiny, is an essential prerequisite for successful interaction with the environment. Patients suffering from social anxiety disorder (SAD) have been proposed to show altered processing of and learning from feedback, especially depending on social context. However, the neural basis and behavioral consequences of altered reinforcement learning in SAD are not clear yet. In the present event-related potentials (ERPs) study, 34 SAD patients and 30 healthy control subjects (HC) performed an adapted version of a probabilistic feedback lea

Children can discriminate the authenticity of happy but not sad or fearful facial expressions, and use an immature intensity-only strategy.

Much is known about development of the ability to label facial expressions of emotion (e.g., as happy or sad), but rather less is known about the emergence of more complex emotional face processing skills. The present study investigates one such advanced skill: the ability to tell if someone is genuinely feeling an emotion or just pretending (i.e., authenticity discrimination). Previous studies have shown that children can discriminate authenticity of happy faces, using expression intensity as an important cue, but have not tested the negative emotions of sadness or fear. Here, children aged 8

Subgenual cingulate and visual cortex responses to sad faces predict clinical outcome during antidepressant treatment for depression.

BACKGROUND: Previous follow-up studies indicate that increased visual cortical, ventral cingulate and subcortical responses of depressed individuals to sad facial stimuli, but not happy stimuli could represent reversible markers of disease severity. We hypothesized that greater responses in these areas to sad stimuli, but not happy stimuli, would predict better subsequent clinical outcome. We also explored areas that would predict a poor outcome. METHODS: Twelve melancholically depressed individuals in the early stages of antidepressant treatment in a secondary care setting participated in tw

Disruption of erythroid K-Cl cotransporters alters erythrocyte volume and partially rescues erythrocyte dehydration in SAD mice.

K-Cl cotransport activity in rbc is a major determinant of rbc volume and density. Pathologic activation of erythroid K-Cl cotransport activity in sickle cell disease contributes to rbc dehydration and cell sickling. To address the roles of individual K-Cl cotransporter isoforms in rbc volume homeostasis, we disrupted the Kcc1 and Kcc3 genes in mice. As rbc K-Cl cotransport activity was undiminished in Kcc1(-/-) mice, decreased in Kcc3(-/-) mice, and almost completely abolished in mice lacking both isoforms, we conclude that K-Cl cotransport activity of mouse rbc is mediated largely by KCC3. Distinguishing bipolar major depression from unipolar major depression with the screening assessment of depression-polarity (SAD-P).

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar I or II major depression are often misdiagnosed with unipolar major depression. The goal of this study was to develop and validate a brief instrument to screen for bipolar disorder in patients actively ill with major depression. METHOD: The sample consisted of subjects who enrolled in the National Institute of Mental Health-Collaborative Program on the Psychobiology of Depression-Clinical Studies from 1978 to 1981 during an episode of major depression and included 91 subjects with bipolar I major depression, 52 with bipolar II major depression, and 338 with u

Sad, glad, or mad hearts? Epidemiological evidence for a causal relationship between mood disorders and coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the epidemiological evidence to determine if there is sufficient support for the hypothesis that mood disorders convey a risk factor in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). METHOD: Based on a review of the related research on Type A behavioral pattern (TABP) and other variables such as anger and hostility and their relationship to coronary artery disease (CAD), the findings were analyzed to ascertain any clinical patterns or similarities between behaviors of Type A and those in mood disorders. Using the given epidemiological criteria for a causal relationsh

Hostility bias or sadness bias in excluded individuals: does anodal transcranial direct current stimulation of right VLPFC vs. left DLPFC have a mitigating effect?

Exclusion has multiple adverse effects on individual's well-being. It induces anger and hostile cognitions leading to aggressive behavior. The purpose of this study was to test whether exclusion would affect recognition of anger on ambivalent faces of the excluders. We hypothesized that exclusion would elicit more anger encoding (hostility bias) than inclusion, but this effect would be mitigated by anodal tDCS of right VLPFC or left DLPFC-regions engaged in negative affect regulation. Participants (N = 96) were recognizing emotions (anger, sadness, happiness) on ambiguous faces of individuals

The simplified agar dilution method (SAD) for simple and accurate fosfomycin MIC testing of urinary Escherichia coli isolates.

BACKGROUND: Fosfomycin is crucial for treating multidrug-resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs), but its rational use depends on accurate MIC testing. The reference agar dilution (AD) method is labor-intensive and not routinely adopted. OBJECTIVE: To develop a Simplified Agar Dilution (SAD) method using commercial plates for fosfomycin MIC testing of urinary Escherichia coli. METHODS: We included 100 clinical E. coli isolates and 4 QC strains. SAD plates were prepared by applying fosfomycin and G-6-P solution onto commercial Mueller-Hinton agar, followed by drying. All isolates were teste

Diminished sensitivity to sad facial expressions in high functioning autism spectrum disorders is associated with symptomatology and adaptive functioning.

Prior studies implicate facial emotion recognition (FER) difficulties among individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD); however, many investigations focus on FER accuracy alone and few examine ecological validity through links with everyday functioning. We compared FER accuracy and perceptual sensitivity (from neutral to full expression) between 42 adolescents with high functioning (IQ > 80) ASD and 31 typically developing adolescents (matched on age, IQ, sex ratio) across six basic emotions and examined links between FER and symptomatology/adaptive functioning within the ASD group. Intercellular adhesion molecule-4 and CD36 are implicated in the abnormal adhesiveness of sickle cell SAD mouse erythrocytes to endothelium.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal adhesiveness of red blood cells to endothelium has been implicated in vaso-occlusive crisis of sickle cell disease. The present study examined whether the SAD mouse model exhibits the same abnormalities of red blood cell adhesion as those found in human sickle cell disease. DESIGN AND METHODS: The repertoire of adhesive molecules on murine erythrocytes and bEnd.3 microvascular endothelial cells was determined by flow cytometry using monoclonal antibodies or by western blotting. Adhesion was investigated in dynamic conditions and measured at different shear stresses. RESU
