Salinity management using an anionic polymer in a pecan field with calcareous-sodic soil.

Soil salinity and sodicity have long been recognized as the major concerns for irrigated agriculture in the Trans-Pecos Basin, where fields are being flood irrigated with Rio Grande River water that has elevated salinity. Reclamation of these salt-affected lands is difficult due to fine-texture, high shrink-swell soils with low permeability. Conventional practice of subsoiling to improve soil permeability is expensive and has had limited success on the irrigated soils that have appreciable amounts of readily weatherable Ca minerals. If these native Ca sources can be effectively used to counter

Dynamics of Salt Secretion by Sporobolus spicatus (Vahl) Kunth from Sites of Differing Salinity.

Secretion of salts by bicellular salt glands and the water relations of the grass Sporobolus spicatus were investigated at four sites along the coast of the Red Sea in Egypt that differed in the extremity of salinity and drought. Salt eliminated by the leaves was similar in its composition at all sites. Na + and Cl - were the dominant ions in the soil, and together comprised about 93% of the dry weight of secreted salt. The molar ratio of K + :Na + in the plant leaves was more than ten-fold that in the interstitial soil solution and thirteen-times that in the secreted salts, reflecting the hig

AtCAMTA4 negatively regulates salinity stress response via regulation of ROS and Na+/K+ homeostasis.

Calmodulin-binding transcription activators (CAMTAs) are key components of calcium-mediated regulation of diverse developmental and stress-responsive processes in plants. Although the functions of several Arabidopsis CAMTA family members have been investigated, the role of CAMTA4 remained largely unexplored. In the present study, we demonstrate that CAMTA4 acts as a negative regulator of salinity tolerance. Integrated physiological, transcriptomic, metabolomic and small RNA analyses revealed that camta4 mutants exhibit reduced membrane damage, lower Na+ and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumu

Transcriptome analysis and effects of low salinity stress on ovarian development in Litopenaeus vannamei.

Litopenaeus vannamei is an economically important shrimp species that can survive in a variety of environments; however, low salinity compromises its reproduction. To investigate whether salinity affects ovarian development in L. vannamei, we reared female shrimp under optimal (30‰) and low (25‰, 20‰, 15‰) salinity conditions. On day 26 post-induction, the ovarian maturation rates were 67.7%, 58.3%, 56.7%, and 31.7% for the 30‰, 25‰, 20‰, and 15‰ salinity groups, indicating that low-salinity compromises ovarian maturation. To provide mechanistic insight, we performed comparative transcriptomic

Desert Plant Trait Networks Differ Among Plant Life Forms and Soil Moisture-Salinity Environments.

Understanding the relationships among plant functional traits and how these are shaped by the soil environment is essential for the study of plant adaptation. Conducted in the desert ecosystem surrounding Ebinur Lake, China, this study assessed key functional traits for eight common desert plant species, including the foliar carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) content, and their stoichiometric ratios (C:N, C:P, N:P), as well as the chlorophyll content (Chl), leaf area (LA), and leaf thickness (LT). Separate plant trait networks (PTNs) were constructed for herbs, shrubs, and trees grow

Gibberellin-dependent brassinosteroid signaling modulates plant growth by optimizing nitrogen levels during salinity stress.

Low nitrogen (LN) and high salt stress are major constraints for plant growth and development. Under LN stress, plants typically show root elongation to increase nitrogen foraging from the rhizosphere, whereas high salt levels cause inhibition of root growth to avoid salinity stress-induced toxicity. To date, mechanisms and strategies of root adaptations in plants under combined LN and high salt stress remain poorly defined. Here, we provide evidence that Arabidopsis plants under LN stress show increased brassinosteroid (BR) signaling activity, which in turn suppresses salt stress-responsive p

Multi-level osmoadaptation strategies of filamentous cyanobacteria within oxygenic photogranules under high salinity stress.

Filamentous cyanobacteria (FC) are key structural and functional components of oxygenic photogranules (OPGs) for saline wastewater treatment. However, how FC maintain cellular osmotic balance while supporting community stability under salinity stress remains poorly understood. Here, we integrated long-term reactor operation, physiological characterization, and multi-omics analyses to elucidate the multi-level osmoadaptation strategies of dominant FC within OPGs. Despite stepwise increases in salinity, OPGs maintained stable pollutant removal and showed enhanced FC growth, polysaccharide (PS) p

Strigolactone-Mediated Modulation of Physiological and Biochemical Responses Under Salinity Stress in Punica granatum.

Salinity stress is a major constraint affecting pomegranate productivity and fruit quality. This study evaluated the effects of strigolactone (SL) at 15 and 30 μM on alleviating salinity stress and improving fruit yield and quality in pomegranate trees over two consecutive seasons. SL treatments significantly enhanced yield per tree, fruit weight, total soluble solids, firmness, ascorbic acid, and anthocyanin content compared with untreated trees. In addition, SL improved relative water content, indicating improved plant water status under saline conditions. SL application reduced membrane per

Protective role of lycopene against salinity-induced oxidative stress in Medicago sativa L. seedlings.

Soil salinization is one of the major challenges to agriculture, reducing productivity and directly affecting plant growth, germination, and physiology, especially in economically important crops such as Medicago sativa. Conventional soil management methods are not always sufficient to mitigate the adverse effects of salinity, highlighting the need for alternative and sustainable strategies. This study evaluated the phytoprotective potential of lycopene (LCP) against NaCl-induced stress in M. sativa. Seeds were treated with 256 µg/mL and 512 µg/mL of LCP combined with 50 mM NaCl and compared t

Green synthesised zinc oxide nanoparticles mitigate salinity-induced oxidative stress in Vigna radiata L.

The productivity of the important dietary legume mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) is severely constrained by abiotic stress, specifically soil salinisation driven by climate variability. To address this challenge, this study evaluated the potential of a novel nanotechnology formulation based on the cyanobacterium Chroococcus minor for the green synthesis and capping of biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles (CmZnONPs) to alleviate salt stress. The biomolecules of C. minor successfully stabilised and capped well-dispersed zinc oxide nanoparticles: UV-vis spectroscopy confirmed a characteristic peak at 34

Observed nitrogen accumulation during salinity and temperature surges in a coastal dam controlled lake.

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that bidirectional dam operations modulate Total Nitrogen (TN) accumulation through changes in salinity, temperature, and hydrodynamic flushing in Guana Lake, Florida. We conducted one year of monthly surveys, complemented by continuous and discrete measurements of TN and key water quality parameters (salinity, temperature, pH, chlorophyll-a, and dissolved oxygen). During summer 2024, management actions increased saltwater inflow to suppress freshwater vegetation, which reduced net outflow and tidal flushing. Together with high evaporation, these actions

Assessment of Salinity Tolerance in Lepeophtheirus salmonis Following Five Generations of Freshwater Treatment Selection.

Non-medicinal approaches for controlling sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestations, such as freshwater (FW) treatments, have been increasingly implemented to support more sustainable parasite control in aquaculture. This study evaluated the efficacy of FW treatment against sea lice under controlled experimental conditions and assessed the potential development of resistance across multiple generations. Sea lice populations were maintained over five consecutive generations, and FW efficacy was evaluated by quantifying lice abundance on Atlantic salmon before and after treatment. Resistanc

Discovery and profiling of efficient microbial strains for struvite biomineralization in high-salinity wastewater.

The microbial mineralization of struvite from high-salinity wastewater offers a promising approach for the simultaneous removal and recovery of phosphorus and nitrogen. Fish processing wastewater (FPW) is characterized by high organic pollutant loads, containing heavy metal copper ions, and variable salinity levels ranging from 2 to 21% NaCl. Such fluctuations in salinity can affect the efficiency of struvite biomineralization. The presence of heavy metal copper ions will also further restrict the function of the struvite-producing strains under high-salt conditions. This study focuses on scre

Salinity-mediated enhancement of quaternary ammonium compounds resistance and removal in endophytic bacteria LSE01.

The widespread usage of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) as disinfectants during the COVID-19 pandemic poses significant environmental risks, such as toxicity to organisms and the emergence of superbugs. In this study, different inorganic salts (NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, MgCl2) were used to induce endophytes LSE01 isolated from hyperaccumulating plants. After five generations of cultivation under 80 g/L NaCl, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of LSE01 to QACs increased by about 3-fold, while its degradation extent increased from 8% to 84% for C12BDMA-Cl and 5%-89% for C14BDMA-Cl. Distinguishing the Effects of Stress Intensity and Stress Duration in Plant Responses to Salinity.

Species-specific variation in response to stress is a key driver of ecological patterns. As climate change alters stress regimes, coastal plants are experiencing intensifying salinity stress due to sea-level rise and more intense storms. This study investigates the variation in species' responses to presses and pulses of salinity stress in five glycophytic and five halophytic species to determine whether salinity intensity, duration, or their interaction best explain patterns of survival and performance. In salinity stress exposure experiments, we manipulated the intensity and duration of sali

Hybridization is strongly constrained by salinity during secondary contact between silverside fishes (Odontesthes, Atheriniformes).

This study investigates a contact zone between two silverside fish species (marine Odontesthes argentinensis and freshwater O. bonariensis) in the estuarine Mar Chiquita lagoon along the Atlantic coast in Argentina (MChL), in which intermediate morphs had been reported. It has been suggested that admixture and introgression occur in MChL between these two species, but direct genetic evidence is lacking. Leveraging samples collected over several years (n = 676), we document the spatial distribution of both species and intermediate morphs within this habitat and collect landmark-based morphometr

Effect of salinity on removal performance and activated sludge characteristics in sequencing batch reactors.

The removal performance, activated sludge characteristics and microbial community in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were studied at salinity ranging from 0 to 20 g/L. Results showed that salinity deteriorated the removal performance. Removal rate of ammonium (NH4+-N), total phosphorus (TP) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were gradually dropped from 95.34%, 93.58% and 94.88% (0 g/L) to 62.98%, 55.64% and 55.78% (20 g/L), respectively. The removals of NH4+-N and TP were mainly influenced during aerobic phase. Besides, salinity increased the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content of

Salinity effects on the bioavailability of aqueous metals for the estuarine killifish Fundulus heteroclitus.

Estuarine organisms experience varying salinity conditions on a daily and seasonal basis, and these fluctuations could influence the amount of metal accumulated from the aqueous phase. The present study experimentally assessed the role of salinity (0, 2, 6, 12, and 25 ppt) on the uptake of As, Cd, Cr, inorganic Hg [Hg(II)], and methylmercury (MeHg) into the euryhaline killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) from the aqueous phase using gamma-emitting radioisotopes. Patterns of metal uptake as a function of salinity varied by metal. Chromium showed no relationship with salinity; Cd, which was most af
