Sex differences in autonomic adverse effects related to antipsychotic treatment and associated hormone profiles.

Autonomic adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs (APs) cause clinical challenges, but few studies have investigated sex differences and their underlying biological pathways. Sex-specific regulation of relevant hormones could be involved. We investigated sex differences in autonomic adverse effects related to olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, and aripiprazole, and the role of hormones related to APs. Patients with severe mental disorders (N = 1318) were included and grouped based on AP monotherapy: olanzapine (N = 364), quetiapine (N = 211), risperidone (N = 102), aripiprazole (N = 138), and

Analysis of medication-induced xerostomia in elderly Japanese patients.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the general condition of elderly xerostomia patients, we collected their background and medication data in order to potentially treat their xerostomia. It is critical to identify the drugs causing xerostomia in elderly patients. A total of 521 patients who were examined at the Xerostomia Clinic of Osaka University Dental Hospital were included in the study. We obtained patients' data on age, sex, number of primary illnesses, Saxon test scores, oral moisture test, subjective symptoms, and drug types from their clinical records. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was

[Odontostomatological changes induced by drugs. I].

The purpose of the present review is to describe the unwanted effects of drugs or chemicals in the orofacial region. The authors take into consideration the alterations of salivation such as xerostomia and ptyalism, disturbances of sense of taste, halitosis and pain and swelling of the salivary glands. The dental surgeon who suspects that an oral alteration might be a drug reaction can play an important role in preventing the development of more severe toxic effects. All this points to the importance of the knowledge of pharmacology for dental practitioners.

[Foot-and-mouth disease vaccine damage or thallium poisoning in cattle (expert opinion)].

Some days after vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease a high degree of salivation, trembling of the muscles, colic, hyperemization of the mucosa of the mouth, extreme thirst, and losing of hairs at the end of the tail occurred in cattle. The cause of these symptoms seems not to be the vaccination, but the content of thallium in silage (41 mg/kg) fresh matter, which was bought from abroad. The diagnosis was confirmed by analysis of thallium in several organs (liver, kidney, muscles).

Protein free diet feeding: effects on sympathetic activity and salivary evoked secretion in the submandibular gland of the rat.

Protein restriction impairs the salivary flow rate and composition in human and rats. The aim of the present work was to establish the effect of low protein (casein 5%) and protein free (casein 0%) isocaloric diets on sympathetic activity and salivary evoked secretion in the submandibular gland (SMG) of the rat. After 21 days, rats fed casein 0% presented: (a) a significant shift to the left of the dose-response curves (DRC) to the autonomic agonists-norepinephrine (NE), methoxamine, isoproterenol (ISO) and methacholine; (b) increased food consumption (p<0.001); (c) decreased body (p<0.001) an

Mechanisms of sympathetic enhancement and inhibition of parasympathetically induced salivary secretion in anaesthetized dogs.

1. The effects of superimposed and continuous sympathetic nerve stimulation on submandibular parasympathetic salivation were investigated in anaesthetized dogs. 2. Superimposed sympathetic nerve stimulation (1-2 min) initially enhanced and later inhibited salivary secretion induced by parasympathetic nerve stimulation (2-8 Hz) in glands with uncontrolled blood supply or constant-flow vascular perfusion. Propranolol (0.05 mg kg-1, i.a.) did not affect the diphasic sympathetic action whereas phentolamine (0.1 mg kg-1, i.a.) abolished it. Prazosin (0.025 mg kg-1, i.a.) greatly lessened the initia

Salivary gland bioengineering - yesterday, today, tomorrow!

Salivary glands are specialized structures developed as an extensively compact, arborized design through classical embryogenesis, accompanied by a cascade of events channelized by numerous growth factors and genetic regulatory pathways. Salivary secretions maintain oral homeostasis and, when diminished in certain conditions, present as xerostomia or salivary hypofunction, adversely impacting the patient's quality of life. The current available treatments primarily aim at tackling the immediate symptoms providing temporary relief to the patient. Despite scientific efforts to develop permanent a

Disease-Induced Changes in Salivary Gland Function and the Composition of Saliva.

Although the physiological control of salivary secretion has been well studied, the impact of disease on salivary gland function and how this changes the composition and function of saliva is less well understood and is considered in this review. Secretion of saliva is dependent upon nerve-mediated stimuli, which activate glandular fluid and protein secretory mechanisms. The volume of saliva secreted by salivary glands depends upon the frequency and intensity of nerve-mediated stimuli, which increase dramatically with food intake and are subject to facilitatory or inhibitory influences within

Salivary dysfunction caused by medication usage.

A considerable number of patients arriving in dental offices are being treated with ongoing medication for a variety of chronic diseases. As a result, dentists must be familiar with the potential side effects these therapeutic agents may have on the tissues of the oral cavity, and in particular on the salivary gland. Salivary gland function may be altered by a wide range of medications, leading to effects such as xerostomia, hyposalivation, hypersalivation or even swelling of the glands. These disorders can cause a variety of other health complications. This review will focus on the most commo

RELATIONSHIP between prandial drinking behavior and supersensitivity of salivary glands after superior salivatory nucleus lesions in RATS.

Prandial drinking, an increase in the number of drinking responses and secondary or non-homeostatic polydipsia in the presence of dry food, is typically associated with a deficit in salivary secretion. This study investigates the degree of salivary gland supersensitivity to pilocarpine administration after lesions to the superior salivatory nucleus (SSN), the site of origin of the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons that innervate the submandibular-sublingual (S-S) salivary glands. The main aim was to determine if there is a relationship between the degree of glandular supersensitivity, as a

Orodental manifestations in ectodermal dysplasia-a review.

Oral signs and symptoms are present in most ectodermal dysplasias (EDs). The aim of this article is to summarize some of the literature on current knowledge of oral manifestations and orofacial function in EDs. The review will focus on the most common forms where dental manifestations can be crucial for a differential diagnosis of ED among individuals with hypodontia and oligodontia, and preferably where the investigations included persons who had a genetically verified diagnosis. Disturbances in tooth development are common and can appear as tooth agenesis, variations in size and shape of tee

[Children should always be examined upon suspicion of the ingestion of foreign bodies].

This case report is of a four-year-old otherwise healthy girl, who was presented to an ear, nose and throat department with salivation and suspected ingestion of a metallic pendant while falling asleep. An X-ray of the chest and upper neck confirmed the suspicion showing an approximately 2 × 2 cm foreign body shaped as a star located in the throat. In general anaesthesia, a metal necklace pendant was removed from the oesophagus mouth. The patient was released from hospital the day after surgery.

Poisoning of dairy heifers by mercurous chloride.

Mercury poisoning was diagnosed in four dairy heifers, three of which died. The clinical signs were variable and included salivation, excessive thirst, extreme depression and severe diarrhoea. Postmortem examinations revealed inflammation and ulceration of the alimentary tract, pulmonary and cardiac haemorrhages, pallor of the kidney cortices and perirenal oedema. The kidney mercury concentrations were in the range 58 to 91 micrograms/g wet tissue. It is believed that the animals were poisoned by the ingestion of soil contaminated with mercurous chloride.

Sedation for gastroscopy: a comparison between midazolam and midazolam with nalbuphine.

Forty patients received either midazolam or midazolam with nalbuphine in a double-blind randomised study of sedation for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. There were less retching, gagging and salivation in the combination group compared to midazolam alone. They were also more cooperative. These resulted in greater ease of insertion of the gastroscope. There was no significant difference in the degree of amnesia in both groups. A significant decrease in oxygen saturation was noted in both groups during the procedure. Monitoring with a pulse oximeter is recommended when sedation is administered

Pilocarpine and other cholinergic drugs in the management of salivary gland dysfunction.

Sialagogues constitute an important component in the management of salivary gland dysfunction. Of the pharmacologic agents available, pilocarpine has been used extensively over the last century. Many clinical trials have documented the efficacy of this alkaloid, with doses that range from 1 to 15 mg normally taken four times a day. There is considerable individual variation in response although it is usually possible, in the presence of sufficient responsive exocrine tissue, to establish a therapeutic regimen that promotes increased salivation without significant side effects.

The effects of m-octopamine on salivary flow rates and protein secretion by rat submandibular glands.

1. m-Octopamine given i.v. or i.p. was a potent sialogogue for rat salivary glands. 2. Salivation in response to i.v. m-octopamine was completely abolished by prazosin and phenoxybenzamine. 3. The alpha-type of proteins were secreted in response to all doses of i.v. and i.p. m-octopamine and these were converted into the beta-type with prazosin, but not with yohimbine. 4. m-Octopamine stimulated both alpha- and beta-adrenoceptors and was a much more selective alpha 1-agonist than was the p-isomer.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAPs) of Farmers on Foot and Mouth Disease in Cattle in Baghlan Province, Afghanistan: A Descriptive Study.

This study was performed to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) of farmers, animal traders, and veterinary professionals on FMD in Baghlan province, Afghanistan. Four structured questionnaires were administered to the respondents. Almost half (48.5%) of the farmers had heard of the occurrence of FMD in their neighbourhood or knew the name of the disease. The majority of farmers could recognise the clinical signs of FMD in their animals (salivation, 85.9%; tongue ulcers, 78.8%; gum lesions, 78.2%; hoof lesions, 76.8%). Most farmers stated that the "introduction of new ani
