ABA-mediated salt tolerance in Astragalus cicer: From physiological-biochemical responses to key regulatory networks identified by transcriptome profiling and WGCNA.

Soil salinization severely constrains the productivity of leguminous forages, but the regulatory mechanisms of salt acclimation in Astragalus cicer remain unclear. Here, we investigated the ABA-dependent salt tolerance network in this species through integrated physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses under controlled stress conditions, including salt treatment, exogenous ABA supplementation, and chemical inhibition of endogenous ABA synthesis. Our results show that exogenous ABA effectively mitigates salt-induced growth inhibition, enhances antioxidant capacity, preserves photo

Ectopic Expression of AeNAC83, a NAC Transcription Factor from Abelmoschus esculentus, Inhibits Growth and Confers Tolerance to Salt Stress in Arabidopsis.

NAC transcription factors play crucial roles in plant growth, development and stress responses. Previously, we preliminarily identified that the transcription factor AeNAC83 gene was significantly up-regulated under salt stress in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). Herein, we cloned the nuclear-localized AeNAC83 from okra and identified its possible role in salt stress response and plant growth. The down-regulation of AeNAC83 caused by virus-induced gene silencing enhanced plant sensitivity to salt stress and increased the biomass accumulation of okra seedlings. Meanwhile, AeNAC83-overexpression A

TaZFP1, a C2H2 type-ZFP gene of T. aestivum, mediates salt stress tolerance of plants by modulating diverse stress-defensive physiological processes.

Salt stress suppresses plant growth, development, and crop productivity. In this study, we characterized the role of TaZFP1, a C2H2 type-zinc finger protein family member of T. aestivum, in salt stress tolerance. TaZFP1 possesses a conserved C2H2 motif (CX2-4CX12HX3-5H) shared by plant ZFP proteins, translocates to the nucleus after endoplasmic reticulum (ER) assortment, and displays a ZF 3-D structure similar to its eukaryote homologs. The transcripts of TaZFP1 were upregulated during salt stress condition and this effect was restored under normal conditions. Compared to wild type (WT), the t

Overexpression of TaNHX3, a vacuolar Na⁺/H⁺ antiporter gene in wheat, enhances salt stress tolerance in tobacco by improving related physiological processes.

Salt stress is one of the major abiotic stresses affecting plant growth, development, and productivity. In this study, we functionally characterized a wheat vacuolar Na(+)/H(+) antiporter gene (TaNHX3). TaNHX3 is 78.9% identical with TaNHX2 in nucleic acid level, encoding a polypeptide of 522 amino acids (aa). TaNHX3 is targeted onto tonoplast after ER sorting and can complement the growth under salt stress in a yeast mutant with a defective vacuolar Na(+)/H(+) antiporter exchange. TaNHX3 transcripts were induced by applying salt stress in wheat cultivars. More TaNHX3 were detected in the salt

Rhizobium tropici genes involved in free-living salt tolerance are required for the establishment of efficient nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with Phaseolus vulgaris.

Characterization of nine transposon-induced mutants of Rhizobium tropici with decreased salt tolerance (DST) allowed the identification of eight gene loci required for adaptation to high external NaCl. Most of the genes also were involved in adaptation to hyperosmotic media and were required to overcome the toxicity of LiCl. According to their possible functions, genes identified could be classified into three groups. The first group included two genes involved in regulation of gene expression, such as ntrY, the sensor element of the bacterial ntrY/ntrX two-component regulatory system involved

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal coordinated molecular responses associated with nano-enabled arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis for salt stress tolerance in rice.

Salinity stress is a major environmental constraint limiting rice growth and yield. Seed nanopriming with calcium oxide nanomaterials (CaO NMs) in combination with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) has recently emerged as an effective strategy to enhance resilience, although the underlying responses remain unexplored. In the present study, rice seeds primed with CaO NMs (80 ppm) and inoculated with the AMF Claroideoglomus claroideum at transplanting were evaluated under 175 mM NaCl stress to assess their effects on plant performance and metabolic responses. The combined treatment significant

Genome-wide identification of the WRKY gene family in apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) and functional characterization of PaWRKY57 in salt stress tolerance.

Soil salinization severely restricts the growth, yield, and industrial development of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.). WRKY transcription factors play crucial roles in plant responses to abiotic stresses. However, the genome-wide characteristics of the WRKY family in apricot and their functional mechanisms in salt tolerance remain unclear. In this study, we identified 58 PaWRKY genes in apricot and characterized their phylogeny, chromosomal distribution, and gene structure. Based on transcriptomic and phylogenetic analyses, PaWRKY57 (homologous to AtWRKY33) was selected as a key salt-responsive

Assessment of the salt tolerance of diverse bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes during the early growth stage under hydroponic culture conditions.

ObjectivesSoil salinity affects the growth of crop plants, leading to reduced productivity, and is a major challenge for wheat production worldwide. Various adaptations and mitigation approaches in combination with tolerant wheat genotypes can be useful for the sustainability of crop production in saline environments. However, the development of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes is one of the best and most efficient solutions for obtaining desirable yields. Considering these issues, an investigation was carried out under hydroponic nutrient culture conditions to assess the genetic variability and

Salt/alkali‑tolerant Streptomyces luteus TRM 45540 improves pepper growth and soil quality in acidic and alkaline soils.

This study evaluated the potential of the salt-alkali-tolerant actinobacterium Streptomyces luteus TRM 45540, isolated from Lop Nur saline-alkali soil in Xinjiang, to alleviate pH-related iron deficiency and promote pepper growth. We hypothesized that this strain could mobilize and compete for soil iron via siderophore production, thereby benefiting plants under variable-pH conditions. To test this hypothesis, we compared its effects with conventional iron fertilizers (EDDHA-Fe₆, ferrous sulfate) and compound microbial fertilizer on pepper growth, soil physicochemical properties, and rhizosphe

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis of Leaves and Roots Responses in Salt-Tolerant Barley Line CC89/Giza123 Under Salinity Stress.

Salinity stress has a debilitating effect on crop productivity and triggers complex molecular changes in plants, and understanding these responses is important for improving stress tolerance. This study investigated transcriptomic changes in the salt-tolerant barley line CC89/Giza123 by analyzing gene expression in roots and leaves following exposure to 200 mM NaCl for 12 and 24 h. The number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) showed a much stronger response in roots than in leaves. At 12 h, roots showed 1836 DEGs, and this number increased to 2696 at 24 h, whereas leaves showed 256 DEGS

Isolation and characterization of salt-tolerant bacteria with plant growth-promoting activities from saline agricultural fields of Haryana, India.

BACKGROUND: Soil salinity has been one of the biggest hurdles in achieving better crop yield and quality. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are the symbiotic heterogeneous bacteria that play an important role in the recycling of plant nutrients through phytostimulation and phytoremediation. In this study, bacterial isolates were isolated from salt-polluted soil of Jhajjar and Panipat districts of Haryana, India. The potential salt-tolerant bacteria were screened for their PGPR activities such as phosphate solubilization, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), indole acetic acid (IAA) and ammonia pr

[Effects of Salt-tolerant Rice Cultivation on Organic Carbon Pool and Carbon Conversion Enzyme Activities in Coastal Saline Soil].

Cultivating salt-tolerant rice (STR) is an effective approach to ameliorating coastal saline soils (CSL). In this study, the CSL without STR cultivation served as the control (CK), while soils with different rice cultivation years (1-5 years) were the research objects. The one-way analysis of variance, redundancy analysis, Monte Carlo permutation test, Mantel test, and structural equation modeling were applied to investigate the changes and internal connections of soil organic carbon components, carbon pool quality, and carbon-converting enzyme activity under STR cultivation in CSL. The result

The unique protein-binding property and strong byproduct separation capability of salt-tolerant anion exchanger TOYOPEARL NH2-750F.

TOYOPEARL NH2-750F is a salt tolerant anion exchange (AEX) resin from Tosoh, which is designed for intermediate purification of mAbs and other types of biomolecules. It is composed of polymethacrylate beads that have been functionalized with primary amine (NH2) AEX groups. Unlike conventional AEX resins, NH2-750F resin can maintain its capacity at conductivities up to 15 mS/cm when used in bind-elute mode. In a sense, NH2-750F is similar to mixed-mode media as both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions contribute to protein retention. A remarkable difference between NH2-750F and conventio

A Covalently Micro-Crosslinked Anionic Copolymer-Based Microgel for High-Temperature and Salt-Tolerant Water-Based Drilling Fluids.

Fluid-loss additives play a critical role in maintaining the stability and filtration-control performance of water-based drilling fluids during deep and high-temperature drilling operations. However, the development of microgel-based additives with both exceptional thermal stability and strong salt tolerance remains a major challenge under harsh drilling conditions. In this study, a covalently micro-crosslinked anionic copolymer-based microgel (PAAN) was synthesized via free-radical copolymerization of acrylamide, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, and N-vinylpyrrolidone using N,N'-me

Isolation, purification, and characterization of nitrate reductase from a salt-tolerant Rhodotorula glutinis yeast strain grown in the presence of tungsten.

The salt-tolerant Rhodotorula glutinis yeast strain grew in medium containing nitrate, 1 mM tungsten, and trace amounts of molybdenum (as impurities from the reagents used). Isolation of electrophoretically homogenous preparation of nitrate reductase from the Rh. glutinis cells grown under these growth conditions is described. The isolated nitrate reductase is a molybdenum-containing homodimer with molecular mass of 130 kD, containing 0.177 mol of Mo per mol of the enzyme. The activity of the enzyme is maximal at pH 7.0 and 35-45 degrees C and is inhibited by low concentrations of azide and cy

Physiological and molecular mechanisms of exogenous salicylic acid in enhancing salt tolerance in tobacco seedlings by regulating antioxidant defence system and gene expression.

INTRODUCTION: Salt stress has emerged as a predominant abiotic factor that jeopardizes global crop growth and yield. The plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) has notable potential in mitigating salt toxicity, yet its mechanism in enhancing the salinity tolerance of tobacco plants is not well explored. METHODS: This study aimed to assess the potential benefits of exogenous SA application (1.0 mM) on tobacco seedlings subjected to saline soil conditions. RESULTS: The foliar spray of SA partially mitigated these salt-induced effects, as evidenced by a reduction of malondialdehyde content, and impr

Modest Salt Reduction Lowers Blood Pressure and Albumin Excretion in Impaired Glucose Tolerance and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Randomized Double-Blind Trial.

The role of salt restriction in patients with impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes mellitus is controversial, with a lack of well controlled, longer term, modest salt reduction trials in this group of patients, in spite of the marked increase in cardiovascular risk. We carried out a 12-week randomized double-blind, crossover trial of salt restriction with salt or placebo tablets, each for 6 weeks, in 46 individuals with diet-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance and untreated normal or high normal blood pressure (BP). From salt to placebo, 24-hour urinary sodium

Physiological response and molecular regulatory mechanism reveal a positive role of nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide applications in salt tolerance of Cyclocarya paliurus.

As a multifunctional tree species, Cyclocarya paliurus leaves are rich in bioactive substances with precious healthy values. To meet the huge requirement of C. paliurus leaf production, sites with some environmental stresses would be potential land for developing its plantations due to the limitation of land resources in China. Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are common gas messengers used to alleviate abiotic stress damage, whereas the mechanism of these messengers in regulating salt resistance of C. paliurus still remains unclear. We performed a comprehensive study to reveal the
