We present the case of a 14-year-old male with Scheuermann's disease and significant neurological deficit due to thoracic disk herniation at the apex of kyphosis. He was treated with an anterior decompression, anterior and posterior fusion in the same setting using plate, cage and a segmental instrumentation system. The patient had an excellent outcome with complete neurological recovery.

The author reports the case of a patient with spinal cord compression by a thoracic herniated disc without paraplegia as well as a cauda equina syndrome due to spondylotic and discal lesions, with small protrusions of the L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs associated with Scheuermann disease. There was complete recovery in six months with clinical treatment. The radiological evaluation using standard radiography, myelography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging of the vertebral column, and electromyographic evaluation indicate a precise correlation between clinical picture and the distribution

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between radiological signs of Scheuermann disease (SD) and low back pain (LBP) in a local population using lumbar magnetic resonance (MR) images.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: SD is a spinal disorder, and both its classic and atypical (lumbar) forms are associated with LBP. However, radiological signs of SD are present in 18% to 40% of the general population, in whom the clinical significance of "SD-like" spine remains largely unknown.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 188 staff members from a

Scheuermann's disease, also referred to as Scheuermann's kyphosis, is the second most frequent spine deformity occurring in humans after adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), both with an unclear etiology. Recent genetic studies in zebrafish unraveled new mechanisms linked to AIS, highlighting the role of the Reissner fiber, an acellular polymer bathing in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in close proximity with ciliated cells and mechanosensory neurons lining the central canal of the spinal cord (CSF-cNs). However, while the Reissner fiber and ciliary beating have been linked to AIS-like phenot

The authors present the results of 20 corrective procedures for juvenile cyphosis using Harrington compressive rods and Hibbs spondylodesis. 16 procedures date back more than one year (average 3 years, 4 months). 10 cases of pure dorsal cyphosis. The pre-operative Cobb-angles for cyphosis averaged 52 degrees, postoperatively an average of 24 degrees was measured. This reflects a 57 p.c. average immediate correction (41 p.c. for pure dorsal cyphosis, 71 p.c. for dorso-lumbar cyphosis) following surgery nearly all cases showed a significant loss of correction (average 43 p.c., dorsal 37 p.c., do

Atypical Scheuermann's disease is a rare spinal disorder characterized by progressive kyphotic deformity and, in rare instances, spinal cord compression. Unlike classic Scheuermann's disease, which affects the thoracic spine, atypical variants may involve the thoracolumbar or lumbar regions, leading to neurological compromise. This report presents a rare case of atypical Scheuermann's disease with spinal cord compression, its surgical management, and a review of relevant literature. A 24-year-old male presented with progressive lower limb weakness, gait instability, and back pain for 6 months.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain in childhood was underappreciated for a long time, but recent studies report higher prevalences, up to 70%. Two of the common causes are spondylolyis/spondylolisthesis and Scheuermann's disease. These disorders are relevant in a way they both cause significant back pain, and may disrupt the sagittal spinal balance.
PURPOSE: To present the current evidence on the diagnosis, natural history and treatment of these disorders with a special focus on sagittal spinal alignment.
METHODS: This study is conducted as a literature review.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Spondylolysis

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare radiographic sagittal spinopelvic parameters between skeletally immature and skeletally mature patients with Scheuermann's disease (SD).
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of standing postero-anterior and lateral radiographs of the spine of patients with SD was performed. Sagittal vertical axis (SVA), thoracic kyphosis (TK), thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK), lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), and sacral slope (SS) were measured on the lateral radiographs. Risser's sign was assessed on the postero-anterior radiographs. All of

STUDY DESIGN: A historic cohort study was conducted to investigate surgical correction and sagittal alignment in 33 patients with thoracic Scheuermann's disease.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate kyphosis correction, correction loss, sagittal balance, and the effect of an anterior release.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Currently, both posterior and anteroposterior techniques seem to produce impressive corrections for Scheuermann's disease. However, few reports have been made on sagittal malalignment after surgery.
METHODS: A cohort of 33 patients who had undergone surgery for their Scheuermann's kyphosi

Scheuermann disease, a structural deformity marked by kyphotic alterations in the thoracic or thoracolumbar spine, is frequently accompanied by back discomfort and spinal wedging. Scheuermann disease predominantly affects the thoracic and thoracolumbar parts of the spine; thus, there is an indirect link between the two conditions. This case report describes a rare form of Scheuermann illness in which lumbar canal stenosis caused bilateral lower limb radiculopathy. A 50-year-old male with a confirmed diagnosis of Scheuermann illness complained of severe back discomfort, developing bilateral low

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Scheuermann's kyphosis is a structural deformity of the thoracolumbar spine that is classified in typical (thoracic) and atypical (lumbar and thoracolumbar) Scheuermann's disease. Surgical intervention is reserved for those with progressive kyphosis, intractable pain and neurological impairment. Although, previous literature focuses on the correction of the thoracic kyphosis (TK), recent lines of evidence recommend considering all the sagittal balance parameters when performing a surgery. We herein, report a posterior-only approach in a patient with Scheuermann's k

Kyphosis of the thoracic spine rotates the scapulae anterior laterally, clavicles and subclavius muscles anteriorly, displaces the manubrium posteriorly, which increases the slope of the first ribs. This increases tension on the anterior scalene muscles and the neurovascular bundles which causes brachial plexopathy (TOS). Scheuermann's disease (spinal osteochondrosis; juvenile kyphoscoliosis) is a disorder which consists of vertebral wedging endplate irregularity and narrowing of the intervertebral disk space causing kyphosis of the thoracic spine and may also involve the lumbar space. It occu

The modified use of the Debrunner-kyphometer (a special protractor to measure the dorsal kyphosis by an objective physical method) is presented. After proving the validity and reproducibility of the measuring method, the dorsal kyphosis of patients with Scheuermann's disease and of matched healthy controls was measured. The aim of the measurements was to assess the physiologic values of kyphosis and to investigate into the distribution of Scheuermann-patients regarding the grade of their dorsal sagittal curvature. In contrast with the everyday routine (subjective judgement of the sagittal curv

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2015eng
UNLABELLED: In 27 centres across Europe, the prevalence of deforming spinal Scheuermann's disease in age-stratified population-based samples of over 10,000 men and women aged 50+ averaged 8% in each sex, but was highly variable between centres. Low DXA BMD was un-associated with Scheuermann's, helping the differential diagnosis from osteoporosis.
INTRODUCTION: This study aims to assess the prevalence of Scheuermann's disease of the spine across Europe in men and women over 50 years of age, to quantitate its association with bone mineral density (BMD) and to assess its role as a confounder for

STUDY DESIGN: This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVES: To compare stable sagittal vertebra (SSV) and first lordotic vertebra (FLV) instrumentation for prevention of distal junctional kyphosis (DJK) in Scheuermann disease.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The SSV has been increasingly chosen as the lowest instrumented vertebra to prevent DJK, and some studies have provided supportive results. However, other studies demonstrate that lowest instrumented vertebra located in the FLV has similar DJK incidence with the benefit of saving levels.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic

This study details a severe case of Scheuermann's disease (SD) in a well-preserved skeleton of a juvenile male (designated TOR302), dated to 3rd-4th century CE, from the late Roman necropolis of Torrenueva (Granada, Spain). Individual TOR302 shows an evident kyphotic curve in the thoraco-lumbar spine, which is characterised by: (i) vertebral bodies of thoracic vertebra T2, thoracic segment T4-T9, and thoraco-lumbar segment T12-L2 wedged at >5°; (ii) slight anterior extensions of the epiphyseal ring; (iii) Schmorl's nodes on the superior and/or inferior plates; and (iv) a Cobb angle of 75°, der
