BACKGROUND: Linear atrophoderma of Moulin (LAM) is a dermatosis that affects children and adolescents characterized by hyperpigmented and atrophic linear lesions following Blaschko lines. So far, less than 50 cases have been published. Therefore, it is a rare entity with unknown etiology and a chronic and self-limited course. Histologically, it is described as hyperpigmentation of the basal layer without the involvement of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. No specific treatment exists currently. Localized scleroderma is a chronic and progressive autoimmune connective tissue disorder that aff

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate peripheral blood T-helper (TH) cell-associated cytokine and chemokine profiles in localized scleroderma (LS), and correlate them with clinical disease features, including disease activity parameters.
METHODS: A 29-plex Luminex platform was used to analyze the humoral profile of plasma samples from 69 pediatric LS patients and 71 healthy pediatric controls. Cytokine/chemokine levels were compared between these two groups and within LS patients, focusing on validated clinical outcome measures of disease activity and damage in LS.
RESULTS: Plasma levels of IP-10, MCP-1, I

Nocardia farcinica is an increasingly common cause of human infection in Europe. We observed an isolated nodular subcutaneous abscess due to N. farcinica in the forearm of a young patient with overlap syndrome between systemic sclerosis and polymyositis. Despite in vitro resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, this oral combination completely resolved the lesion within 3 weeks and was maintained for 6 months. The spectrum of cutaneous nocardiosis in the immunocompromised host is discussed.

We describe a 45-year-old white man in whom distinctive clinical and histologic features of localized scleroderma developed at sites of injection of vitamin K1 (phytonadione). A direct immunofluorescence test demonstrated prominent linear deposition of IgA along the basement membrane zone. No circulating antibasement membrane zone IgA antibodies were identified on indirect immunofluorescence testing. We believe that the unusual immunofluorescence finding in our patient is nonspecific and represents an epiphenomenon caused by cutaneous injury.

En coup de sabre scleroderma (ECDS) and progressive hemifacial atrophy (PHA) are classified as forms of linear scleroderma of the head and face, a subset of juvenile localized scleroderma (JLoS). In ECDS, sclerotic lesions primarily localize to the forehead and frontoparietal scalp, typically unilaterally. PHA involves the atrophy of facial soft tissues and adjacent cartilage-bone structures on one side, leading to significant deformities. Both forms may involve the eye and central nervous system (CNS), potentially presenting with hemiplegia in PHA. These conditions can coexist and require imm

Localized scleroderma (LS), commonly known as morphea, presents a significant clinical challenge due to its chronic, inflammatory nature affecting the skin and potentially underlying tissues. This systematic review explores the innovative approach of combining laser therapy and injectable fillers, specifically hyaluronic acid, for the treatment of LS. We conducted a comprehensive literature review following PRISMA guidelines, examining articles from MEDLINE/PubMed to assess the combined efficacy of these treatments in improving both esthetic and functional outcomes for LS patients. The search

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate factors associated with extracutaneous involvement (ECI) in juvenile localized scleroderma (jLS).
METHODS: A prospective, multicentre, 6-month observational study was performed. The data collected included disease features, global assessments, and subject symptoms. Bivariate and linear multilevel regression analyses were performed.
RESULTS: A total of 86 jLS subjects (80% female, 80% Caucasian), median age of disease onset 7.7 years, were evaluated. Most had linear scleroderma or mixed morphea. Of the 86 subjects, 49 (57%) had 125 extracutaneo

Localized scleroderma (LS) is a sclerotic skin disorder rarely reported in the veterinary literature. We herein report the first case of a linear LS-like skin lesion in a cat. A 1-year-old castrated male Himalayan cat was presented with a 1-month history of an alopecic, indurated, serpiginous, branched skin lesion on the dorsal cervical to scapular area. The cat had no history of trauma, although a topical spot-on endectocide had been applied near the lesion. Histopathological examination revealed a focal area of hyperplastic dermal collagen with the absence of pilosebaceous units. The cutaneo

INTRODUCTION: The presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) is associated with infections, drugs and autoimmune disorders. Those antibodies are also detected in approximately 5-20% of the healthy population. The presence of aPL can lead to the occurrence of thrombotic events or abortion, which define the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
AIM: To evaluate the potential role of aPL in diagnosing APS in patients with localized scleroderma (LoS).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Serum samples from 45 patients with various forms of LoS were examined. They were screened with the commercially-available imm

The association between morphea and perineural inflammation has been reported sporadically but never studied systematically. To assess the prevalence and nature of perineural inflammation in various clinicopathologic stages of morphea and a cohort of other inflammatory dermatoses, 80 morphea and 36 control skin biopsies were studied using hematoxylin/eosin and S100 stains. Perineural inflammation was semiquantitatively analyzed (scored), which along with the pattern (concentric vs. marginal) and cellular composition was compared in the two groups. Perineural inflammation was identified in 84%

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the construct validity of 2 proposed measures (the Ultrasound Disease Activity [U-DA] and the Tissue Thickness Score [TTS]) for evaluating sonographic differences in juvenile localized scleroderma skin lesions.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of juvenile localized scleroderma patients who had ultrasound scans of their skin lesions between October 2005 and February 2009. Imaged lesions were classified as active or inactive based upon clinical assessment. Lesions had to have been imaged within 1 month of a clinic visit or have the same clinical assessment dur

Serum levels of B-cell activating factor belonging to the tumor necrosis factor family (BAFF), a potent B-cell survival factor, are elevated in patients with systemic autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis and systemic sclerosis (SSc). The objective of this study was to determine serum BAFF levels and relate the results to the clinical features in patients with organ-specific autoimmune diseases of the skin, such as localized scleroderma and autoimmune bullous diseases. Serum BAFF levels were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 44 pat

Prevalence, levels, and immunoglobulin classes of anti-single-stranded DNA antibodies were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 52 patients with localized scleroderma (33 with morphea, four with generalized morphea, and 15 with linear scleroderma), in 60 healthy controls, and, for comparison, in 31 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Localized scleroderma revealed a significant prevalence of anti-single-stranded DNA antibodies, mainly characterized by high levels and IgM and IgA isotypes. Comparison of antibody characteristics in different clinical forms of localized s

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis and localized scleroderma are rheumatoid fibrotic diseases characterized by altered blood vessel permeability and dysregulated angiogenesis. MAGI1 is an intracellular protein expressed at the epithelial and endothelial cell junction, regulating cell adhesion and epithelial/endothelial integrity. Endothelial cell MAGI1 regulates angiogenic function and blood flow. In the present study, we investigated the role of transgenic human MAGI1 in endothelial cells in animal models of localized scleroderma and systemic sclerosis. METHODS: Wild-type and human MAGI1-overexpr

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) and localized scleroderma (LoSc) are rare connective tissue diseases that are identified by skin thickening and hardening with different mechanisms of action. Although advancements in treatments have been achieved in recent years, these conditions remain a major cause of morbidity and currently lack a definitive cure. We sought to evaluate the efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment in individuals with LoSc and SSc. PubMed/Medline, Ovid-Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched until December 27th, 2024. A citation search was also carr
