Facial injuries in Scotland 2001-2009: epidemiological and sociodemographic determinants.

To our knowledge, sociodemographic determinants of facial injuries in children have not previously been reported in Scotland. We analysed the pattern, time trends, and key sociodemographic determinants of facial injuries in children and adolescents using Scottish morbidity records for inpatient care (2001-2009) which were retrieved from the Information Services Division of National Health Services (NHS) Scotland. We calculated annual incidences by age, sex, health board, Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD), and mechanism of injury. A Poisson regression analysis model was used to inco

Deprivation (im)mobility and cause-specific premature mortality in Scotland.

A common approach for measuring geographical inequalities in health has been to calculate deprivation scores for small areas and then to aggregate these into quintiles. Mortality rates may then be compared for the highest and lowest deprivation quintiles at two points in time and the change in the difference between the rates determines the extent to which inequalities have widened or narrowed. This 'period-specific' approach to measuring inequalities is problematic both because deprivation calculated at different points in time is not directly comparable, and because the boundaries of the are

Porphyria cutanea tarda in Scotland: underlying associations and treatment approaches.

BACKGROUND: Despite its rarity, porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is globally recognized as the most common form of cutaneous porphyria. This study aims to review the underlying associations and treatment of PCT in Scotland. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data on 27 patients diagnosed with PCT between 1987 and 2022 at the Scottish Cutaneous Porphyria Service. RESULTS: Males slightly predominated (66.7%). The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age at diagnosis was 55.6 ± 12.5 years. Common associated factors were heavy alcohol intake (88.5%), genetic hemochromatosis (72%), smoking (45.5%), and

Emergence of Lyme Disease on Treeless Islands, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Lyme disease is usually associated with forested habitats but has recently emerged on treeless islands in the Western Isles of Scotland. The environmental and human components of Lyme disease risk in open habitats remain unknown. We quantified the environmental hazard and risk factors for human tick bite exposure among treeless islands with low and high Lyme disease incidence in the Western Isles. We found a higher prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato-infected ticks on high-incidence than on low-incidence islands (6.4% vs. 0.7%); we also found that residents of high-incidence islands

The south-east Scotland dermatology workload study: 30 years' analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dermatological activity data have been collected for the same region of south-east Scotland (population 1·24 million), approximately every 5 years, since 1981. This has allowed assessment of trends in demand from primary and secondary care, and activity within secondary care dermatology services, assisting planning of dermatological services. OBJECTIVES: To quantify dermatology outpatient workload across the same population to allow comparison with previous studies for trends in practice. METHODS: During November 2010, a standardized proforma was completed for all National Health

Early-onset Alzheimer's disease in Scotland: environmental and familial factors.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common, complex, age-related disorder in which both genetic and environmental factors are important. AIMS: To integrate recent studies on genetic and environmental factors in AD into a multi-factorial disease model. METHOD: Disease models to explain gene-environment interaction in cardiovascular disease are related to observations on AD. RESULTS: Informative, community-based studies on the genetic epidemiology of AD are rare. Putative risk factors from the Scottish studies include increased paternal age in AD men and coal mining as paternal occupati

Meningococcal disease due to serogroup Y in Scotland, 1992-1999.

Meningococcal disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. A retrospective analysis was performed of all cases of invasive group-Y disease that were laboratory-confirmed in Scotland between 1992 and 1999. A total of 1881 meningococcal isolates were characterised, 78 of which were serogroup Y. The incidence of non-invasive group-Y disease remained level between 1992 and 1999. Only 12 isolates were from invasive disease, comprising five strain types. Invasive group-Y disease was associated mostly with the young or old. Serogroup-Y meningococcal disease was uncommon and a rare cause

Cutaneous malignant melanoma, Scotland, 1979-89. The Scottish Melanoma Group.

The Scottish Melanoma Group (SMG) was established in 1979 to assess mortality from and incidence, features, pathological data, and management of cutaneous malignant melanoma in Scotland. Incidence during the first five years and five-year survival have already been reported. We now have data about incidence and mortality over eleven years in relation to anatomical site and pathological types. From 1979 to 1989, 1354 male and 2459 female patients with primary cutaneous malignant melanomas were first diagnosed in Scottish residents. The incidence rate per 100,000 population per year has increase

Measles, mumps, rubella antibody surveillance: pilot study in Grampian, Scotland.

The prevalence of measles, mumps and rubella antibodies for ages over six months was obtained using a stratified random sample of stored sera submitted in 1988 prior to the implementation of MMR vaccine. Besides reflecting the different vaccination policies for the three viruses the results showed that males display earlier sero-conversion for all three infections and a higher proportion of older males are susceptible. Two-thirds of children aged 6-15 months had antibodies to measles, the majority of which were apparently vaccine induced. However, the possibility that a few children contract n

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Scotland and Northern Ireland 1980-1989.

The epidemiological and clinical features of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have never before been studied in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Case records for those dying with this diagnosis were obtained for the period 1980-89. Over the ten year period, 25 definite or probable cases were identified, giving an annual incidence of 0.37 cases/million. There were more cases in the second half of the decade, and this was most likely due to increased ascertainment. One pair of cases occurred in close proximity to each other. Sex distribution showed an excess of males (male:female ratio = 1.8:1). Mean age

Cytogenetic analysis in 100 spontaneous abortions in North-East Scotland.

The results of an extremely detailed cytogenetic analysis on 100 spontaneous abortions occurring in the Aberdeen area over a 3 year period is presented. A comparison with other published series reveals that there is a higher culture success rate (93%) accompanied by a lower incidence of trisomy and a higher incidence of triploidy, although the percentage of chromosomally abnormal foetuses in first trimester abortions is comparable with other studies. However, these apparent discrepancies can largely be explained on the basis of gestational age and sampling variation.
