Adverse physiological and psychological effects of screen time on children and adolescents: Literature review and case study.

UNLABELLED: A growing body of literature is associating excessive and addictive use of digital media with physical, psychological, social and neurological adverse consequences. Research is focusing more on mobile devices use, and studies suggest that duration, content, after-dark-use, media type and the number of devices are key components determining screen time effects. Physical health effects: excessive screen time is associated with poor sleep and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity, low HDL cholesterol, poor stress regulation (high sympathetic aro

Factors Associated With Nonadherence to Lung Cancer Screening Across Multiple Screening Time Points.

IMPORTANCE: Screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT) has been shown to reduce mortality from lung cancer in randomized clinical trials in which the rate of adherence to follow-up recommendations was over 90%; however, adherence to Lung Computed Tomography Screening Reporting & Data System (Lung-RADS) recommendations has been low in practice. Identifying patients who are at risk of being nonadherent to screening recommendations may enable personalized outreach to improve overall screening adherence. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with patient nonadherence to Lung-RADS recomm

Replication of acne susceptibility loci and gene-environment interactions with screen time in Singapore and Malaysia Chinese population.

Acne vulgaris is a common chronic inflammatory skin disorder with a substantial genetic contribution. However, replication of findings from genome-wide association studies across diverse populations remains limited. In this study, we evaluated 88 previously reported acne-associated variants in 2741 acne cases and 2235 controls from the Singapore/Malaysia Cross-sequential Genetic Epidemiology Study. Two association signals were replicated at Bonferroni-corrected significance: rs1159268 near TGFB2 at 1q41 and rs738409 in the PNPLA3 coding region at 22q13.31, with consistent directions of effect.

Positive ADHD Scores are Associated With Higher Screen Time and Anxiety Symptoms in Medical Students: Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) refers to a set of symptoms, such as an inability to sustain attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, with a prevalence of 2.0% for the general population. Approximately 2.7% of American medical students report having some form of disability, with ADHD emerging as the most frequently self-disclosed condition. Medical students with a positive ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) score present more depression symptoms in comparison with those with a negative ASRS score. Previous studies suggest that a low amount of time spent in physical act

Associations among screen time, depressive symptoms and sleep in early adolescents: A sex-disaggregated cross-lagged network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has established associations among screen time, depressive symptoms, and sleep. However, the nuances of these associations, particularly regarding directionality and sex-specific differences among early adolescents, remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate sex differences in the longitudinal associations among screen time, depressive symptoms, and sleep at the symptom level during early adolescence. METHODS: Our cohort consisted of 2987 students (1451 boys at T1; Mage = 10.52 years), who were assessed twice over six-month intervals. Sex-stra

Screen time reduction and Surya Namaskars-a comprehensive intervention for nonspecific back pain in adolescents: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that excessive screen time exposure and a lack of physical exercise are associated with nonspecific back pain in adolescents. Reduced screen time exposure and Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutations) have physical and psychological benefits. We aim to test a novel comprehensive school-based intervention module-Screen time reduction and Surya Namaskars (SanSKAR) for reducing the proportion of school-going adolescents reporting nonspecific back pain. The word "sanskar" originates in Sanskrit and roughly means good values or actions. METHODS: The study will be conducted i

Associations of Sleep Duration and Screen Time with Incidence of Overweight in European Children: The IDEFICS/I.Family Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decades, children have been increasingly using screen devices, while at the same time their sleep duration has decreased. Both behaviors have been associated with excess weight, and it is possible they act as mutually reinforcing behaviors for weight gain. The aim of the study was to explore independent, prospective associations of screen time and sleep duration with incident overweight in a sample of European children. METHODS: Data from 4,285 children of the IDEFICS/I.Family cohort who were followed up from 2009/2010 to 2013/2014 were analyzed. Hours per day of s

Independent and combined influences of physical activity, screen time, and sleep quality on adiposity indicators in Indian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate physical activity (PA), excess screen time (ST), and sub-optimal sleep quality tend to co-occur during adolescence. Yet, little is known about the associations of these behaviors as a cluster with adiposity indicators in Indian adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate the independent and combined influences of PA, ST, and sleep quality on body mass index (BMI) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) in 10-15 years old adolescents in Mumbai, India. A secondary aim was to explore if these influences vary between sexes. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Adolescents (n = 772, mean
