[Self-mutilation with crystalline lens dislocation in Gilles de la Tourette disease treated with retropupillary "iris claw" lens].

BACKGROUND: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Extreme forms of this disease manifest themselves with self-mutilating behavior and foul language. HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 59-year-old man, treated for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, presented with visual loss after an attack during which he punched his right eye with his fist. On examination visual acuity was decreased to finger counting but could be improved to 1.0 with an S + 13D lens. There was vitreous prolaps into the anterior chamber and pigment was noted in the vitreous cavity. T

A RETREG1 variant is associated with hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy with acral self-mutilation in purebred German Spitz.

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSAN) represent a group of genetic diseases affecting the peripheral nervous system. In humans, at least 16 loci have been associated with the disorder but do not explain the disease origin of all patients. In dogs, similar conditions have been documented for decades in various breeds with a severe impact on life quality and are often referred to as acral mutilation syndrome (AMS). Causal variants in three genes have been identified to date, suggesting larger genetic heterogeneity in the dog population. Our aim was to explain the genetic etiology

The role of impulsivity in self-mutilators, suicide ideators and suicide attempters - a study of 1265 male incarcerated individuals.

OBJECTIVE: We explored differences between high and low-impulsive incarcerated individuals in the context of lifetime self-mutilation, suicide ideation and suicide attempt. METHODS: A total of 1265 males detained in Italian penitentiary institutions were studied between January 2006 and December 2008. The study raters were specifically trained to discriminate between suicide attempters, ideators and self-mutilators. Participants completed the Barratt Impulsivity Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Br

Forensic and clinical insights into the eshmun complex: A case of scrotal self-mutilation with phenol in a gender dysphoric individual.

The Eshmun complex is a term coined to describe self-genital mutilation or auto-castration under psychiatric disorders. Self-mutilation of the genitals can be an unfortunate outcome of different delusional beliefs regarding belonging to another gender or chronic substance abuse leading to self-harm. The result can be a minor injury or an adverse event, such as a fatality. In either case, the patient should undergo a medical and detailed psychiatric evaluation and counseling. We describe a case involving a 24-year-old man who arrived at the hospital's emergency department. With an alleged histo

Repetitive self-mutilation among Japanese eating disorder patients with drug use disorder: comparison with patients with methamphetamine use disorder.

Repetitive self-mutilation and drug use disorder are less prevalent in Japan, although the prevalence of eating disorder is comparable with rates in Western countries. However, repetitive self-mutilation has not previously been described in relation to eating disorder and drug use disorder in Japan. Subjects consisted of 19 patients with eating disorders and drug use disorders (ED+DUD) and 12 patients with methamphetamine use disorders (MAP). Subjects were drawn from 180 patients who were referred because of eating disorders and 22 patients who were referred because of methamphetamine-related

Gradually increasing predominance of self-mutilation in upper extremity arterial injuries: less morbidity but with high threat to society.

BACKGROUND: Although vascular trauma of the upper extremity is increasingly more common, mortality and morbidity rates remain low, at between 0-8%. Self-mutilation has become evident in recent years. We planned this study to compare the results of self-mutilation with other penetrating trauma in upper extremity vascular injuries and also to emphasize the dangers of self-mutilation for society. METHODS: Data of 249 patients with penetrating vascular injury of the upper extremity were retrospectively analyzed. There were 214 male (86%) and 35 female (14%) patients, with a mean age of 24.76 ± 11

Self-Mutilation of the Fingers After a Supracondylar Humerus Fracture: The Deleterious Effects of a Median Nerve Palsy: A Case Report.

CASE: A toddler underwent percutaneous pin fixation for a type III supracondylar humerus fracture (SHF). At home, her cast fell off and her k-wires pulled out. Subsequently, she presented to the emergency department for biting the tip of her index finger off and chewing on her thumb and middle fingers. She was diagnosed with a median nerve (MN) palsy with associated paresthesia. CONCLUSION: In very young children, it may be difficult to cope with the sensation of paresthesias after a MN palsy after a SHF. Self-mutilation of the fingers may be an unfortunate complication from these paresthesia

Self-mutilative behaviors in male substance-dependent inpatients and relationship with anger and aggression: mediator effect of childhood trauma.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of self-mutilation (SM) with anger and aggression in male substance-dependent inpatients. Also, we wanted to evaluate the mediator effect of childhood trauma on these relationships while controlling variables such as age, substance of dependence (alcohol/drug), and negative effect. Participants were consecutively admitted 200 male substance-dependent inpatients. Patients were investigated with the Self-mutilative Behaviour Questionnaire, the Childhood Trauma Reports, the Buss-Perry's Aggression Questionnaire, the State-Trait Anger Expre

Cervical cord tethering due to split cord malformation at the cervico-dorsal junction presenting with self-mutilation of the fingers.

An unusual case of cervical spinal cord tethering with diplomyelia is described. A 12-month old female presented with self-mutilation of the fingers due to sensory loss in the hands, absent reflexes, poor muscle tone, and reduced distal upper-limb movements. There was a deep skin dimple overlying the T1 spinous process. Imaging showed angulation of the lower cervical cord and an operation revealed a low cervical meningocele and a split cord malformation with tethering of one half of the cord; the cord was untethered. In this report the literature is reviewed.

Self-mutilating autocannibalistic onycophagia causing infectious compartment syndrome, osteomyelitis, and sepsis: A case report and review of the literature.

Onycophagia, or nail-biting, is common in adults and children, but self-mutilating onycophagia is almost exclusively associated with nerve injury and psychiatric comorbidities, and may lead to osteomyelitis and flexor tenosynovitis. Cases with autophagy or autocannabalistic components are extremely rare, as are cases requiring proximal amputation. Behavioral interventions are rarely successful, but the literature supports psychiatric medication to decrease the onycophagic impulse. We therefore present a 70-year-old male with history of severe onycophagia, diabetic neuropathy, and vascular dise

Self-mutilation of the lower lip in a child with dystonia secondary to megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy treated with botox injections: a case report.

PURPOSE: We report the case of a 10-year old boy who had been diagnosed with megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy several years earlier. Because of the patient's oral dystonic activity, a traumatic, nonhealing, chronic ulcer had developed on his lower lip. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Botox-A was injected into the mentalis, orbicularis oris, and bilateral masseter muscles. RESULTS: The patient showed decreased dystonia and gradual complete healing of the traumatic ulcer of the lower lip. CONCLUSIONS: The treatment of patients with self-mutilation to the lips will often be difficult. Traditionally,

Extended extra- and intracerebral ulceration and brain abscess following self-mutilation in an auto-aggressive 51-year-old woman: case report.

In neurosurgical practice, the operative treatment of deep or infected wounds caused by auto-mutilation is quite rare, especially in the neurocranium. We present an extraordinary case of an auto-aggressive 51-year-old female suffering from a deeply ulcerated wound on the right frontal skull with consecutive brain abscess, caused manually with needles and forceps over a period of 8 months. The clinical course is present ed together with a description of the conservative and surgical regimen and is illustrated with photographs and CT and MRI images.
