INTRODUCTION: Children and young people with complex needs (severe motor impairments and without speech) have few opportunities to use alternative devices for communication. Eye-gaze controlled computers (EGCCs) might provide individuals with complex needs increased opportunities for communication and participation in society.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of EGCCs on communication, functional independence and participation in activities in children and young people with complex needs.
METHODS: A multicenter intervention study during seven months, measuring outcomes with or without EG

PURPOSE: Assistive Technology (AT) devices provide essential means of mobility, employment, communication, social engagement for older adults and people with different disabilities, if prescribed correctly to match users' needs and goals. Regardless of the setting or location, a successful AT service delivery model includes the multidisciplinary collaboration of the people with disabilities and the specialists who have knowledge and expertise in the design and application of AT. In Saudi Arabia, unfortunately, the availability of AT devices is mainly limited to basic mobility and daily living

Many individuals need a mobility assistive device as they age. These devices include canes, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs. Clinicians should understand how to select the appropriate device and size for individual patients (or work with a physical therapist) and prescribe the device using the patient's health insurance plan. Canes can improve standing tolerance and gait by off-loading a weak or painful limb; however, they are the least stable of all assistive devices, and patients must have sufficient balance, upper body strength, and dexterity to use them safely. Older adults rarely use c

PURPOSE: Increasing numbers of students with disabilities are accessing higher education each year, yet little is known about their assistive technology (AT) needs and its influence on relevant outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine met/unmet AT needs on educational engagement, academic self-efficacy and well-being and the impact of AT use in the areas of competence, adaptability and self-esteem for students with disabilities in higher education in Ireland.
METHODS: One hundred and eleven students with disabilities completed a cross-sectional online survey comprising the College Learn

PURPOSE: The use of assistive technology (AT) for people with disabilities is well researched and prevalent in education. Growing numbers of students now self-identify as having mental health diagnoses and register for accommodations at post-secondary institutions. The apparent gap in the literature specifically relating to AT support in this population necessitated a more systematic search. This scoping review maps the literature regarding AT interventions to support young adults with mental health disabilities in post-secondary institutions such as universities and colleges.

Aims: The purpose of this research was to examine the lived experiences of adults with upper limb absence, specifically the interplay of device use, ability, and quality of life through semi-structured interviews. We sought to draw insight from these experiences to improve the practice and perceptions of adults with upper limb absence, prosthetists, and technology designers. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted and interpreted with phenomenological analysis for fourteen individuals with acquired or congenital limb absence. Through an interpretive phenomenological analysis approach

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organisation has launched a programme to promote Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology. Its aim is to increase access to high-quality affordable assistive products (AP) for everybody in need. People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are a specific group that could benefit from AP, but use less AP compared to their non-intellectual disabled peers.
METHOD: A systematic literature search was carried out to identify barriers and potential facilitators for access to AP for people with ID globally. The search strategy terms were 'Intellectual Disability' and 'Ass

The interaction with electronic devices is crucial in our technological society. Hand kinetic tremor complicates mouse driving in Essential tremor patients. To solve this issue some technological solutions are available and accessible online. We present a 71-year-old patient with prominent mouse controlling tremor who improved with one of these systems.

This research focused on the advancements made in enabling agricultural workers with impaired mobility to access and operate off-road agricultural machinery. Although not a new concept, technological advancements in remote-controlled lifts, electronic actuators, electric over hydraulic controllers, and various modes of hand controls have advanced significantly, allowing operators with limited mobility to resume a high level of productivity in agricultural-related enterprises. In the United States, approximately 1.7% of the population is living with some form of paralysis or significant mobilit

BACKGROUND: Gait and balance impairments lead to frequent falls and injuries in individuals with Huntington's disease (HD). Assistive devices (ADs) such as canes and walkers are often prescribed to prevent falls, but their efficacy is unknown. We systematically examined the effects of different types of ADs on quantitative gait measures during walking in a straight path and around obstacles.
METHODS: Spatial and temporal gait parameters were measured in 21 subjects with HD as they walked across a GAITRite walkway under 7 conditions (i.e., using no AD and 6 commonly prescribed ADs: a cane, a w

PURPOSE: Develop the content for interpretive guidelines and an interactive training programme for professionals administering the Assistive Technology Device Predisposition Assessment (ATD PA) consumer form, a self-report assessment tool for consumers to identify their perceived functional capabilities and limitations, satisfaction with and priorities for quality of life achievement, psychosocial characteristics and device preferences.
METHOD: Twenty-two professionals (with 1-2 consumers each) completed surveys on their use of the ATD PA and recommendations for interpretive guidelines and an

The prevalence and nature of incontinence means that all nurses will see patients who suffer from this condition. Many professionals remain unaware of products that can assist in the management of such patients. This article describes experience with some of the products available, highlighting their clinical usefulness and effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Post-coma patients emerging from a minimally conscious state may have extensive motor disabilities and pose serious challenges to medical centers and home settings.
OBJECTIVES: To promote academic performance and communication skills of post-coma individuals with traumatic brain injuries emerging from a minimally conscious state through an Assistive Technology setup. To evaluate its effects on the participants' positive participation. To generalize the learning process. To assess the intervention's clinical and social validity.
METHOD: Study I included five adolescents exposed to

Gaze-based assistive technology was used in informal clinical assessments. Excerpts of medical journals were analyzed by directed content analysis using a model of communicative competence. The results of this pilot study indicate that gaze-based assistive technology is a useful tool in communication assessments that can generate clinically relevant information.

UNLABELLED: Researching the outcomes of assistive technology devices (ATDs) for older clients is important to facilitate clinical decision-making. However, to understand the outcomes associated with ATDs, one must investigate the users' experiences and acknowledge the user as an active participant in diverse social contexts.
PURPOSE: To enhance understanding of the users' perspective regarding ATDs, this study aimed to investigate the meaning of the ATD for older individuals still living in their home environment.
METHODS: To provide descriptions of ATD experiences, older individuals who rec

Individuals with tetraplegia rely on assistive devices to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and enhance independence. This review evaluates their effectiveness and user acceptance for supporting independence. A systematic literature search was conducted across seven databases from September 2004-2024 (PROSPERO: CRD42022370351). Studies evaluating assistive devices in experimental or real-world settings with individuals with tetraplegia that reported performance (task achievement) and perception (user experience) outcomes were included. Risk of bias was assessed with the Downs and Black

Introduction-Purpose: Despite the growing amount of data on the 'synthetic speech perception' by people with no disabilities, there has been limited research on the intelligibility and comprehension of synthetic speech systems by dyslexics. This study investigated the intelligibility and comprehension of synthetic versus natural speech in Greek dyslexic students.Method: Forty three dyslexic students were presented with various acoustic stimuli (words, sentences, texts) both in synthetic and natural speech. Results: The data analysis has shown that dyslexic students had identified better words a
