A man with profound mental retardation and multiple topographies of severe self-injurious behavior (SIB) had been receiving contingent shock for SIB for 2 years before the study started. Shock was being delivered with a handheld shock stick (Hot Shot Sabre Six), which produced burns to the man's skin. SIB rate, without a shock contingency, was 10 responses/min. The Therapeutic Shock Device (TSD), worn by the client and remotely operated by a radio frequency signal, provided superior control of SIB (0.02 responses/min) compared with the shock stick (0.06 responses/min) without causing tissue da

IMPORTANCE: Sexual minority young adults experience disproportionately high rates of self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITB), including suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). While exposure to close others' SITB (eg, a friend or family member's suicide attempt) is a known risk factor for SITB, its role in sexual orientation disparities in SITB remains underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether exposure to close others' SITB is associated with sexual orientation disparities in SITB.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study assessed data fro

OBJECTIVE: Childhood trauma has been identified as a risk factor for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (STBs), but the roles of different types of childhood trauma have not been clarified. The current study aimed to explore the association between different childhood trauma experiences and STB profiles.
METHOD: The current study utilized data from a cross-sectional survey of 89,281 Chinese university and college students (Mage = 19.6). Participants were classified into one of six STBs groups, including individuals who are not suicidal or having nonsuicidal self-injury (NS) behavior, indiv

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious public health concern that typically onsets during early adolescence. Adolescents (N = 980, ages 12-19 years) admitted for acute, residential psychiatric treatment completed baseline clinical interviews assessing mental disorders and questionnaires measuring demographics, early life adversity, and symptom severity. Prevalence rates of NSSI for lifetime (thoughts: 78%; behaviors: 72%), past year (thoughts: 74%; behaviors: 65%), and past month (thoughts: 68%; behaviors: 51%) were high. Although effect sizes were modest, the presence of a lifetime depr

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), a group of disorders affecting ~1-2% of the general population, are caused by changes in brain development that result in behavioral and cognitive alterations, sensory and motor changes, and speech and language deficits. Neurodevelopmental disorders encompass a heterogeneous group of disorders including, but not limited to, Smith-Magenis syndrome, Lesch-Nyhan disease, cri du chat syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, pervasive developmental disorders, fragile X syndrome, Rett syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome, and Down syndrome. An 11-year-old boy with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) had persistently injured himself by biting his lips and buccal mucosa since infancy. Risperidone was only partially effective in suppressing this behavior. Oral administration of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), involving increasing the dose from 400 mg to 1 g, resulted in the amelioration of self-injurious behavior and anxiety as well as marked improvement in his self-esteem, performance at school, and friendships. No adverse effects were noted. SAMe may have a favorable effect on symptoms of LNS by activating monoaminergic pathways and/or increa

BACKGROUND: To date, there are no empirically validated treatments of good quality for adolescents showing suicidality and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. Risk factors for suicide are impulsive and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior, depression, conduct disorders and child abuse. Behind this background, we tested the main hypothesis of our study; that Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents is an effective treatment for these patients.
METHODS: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) has been developed by Marsha Linehan - especially for the outpatient treatment of chronically non-

This case report describes an integrated intervention for chronic self-injurious behavior (SIB) in an adult woman with severe intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder features. The intervention was delivered primarily through monthly consultations with her mother, with periodic involvement of community-based service providers. A functional assessment interview identified routine-specific antecedents and maintaining contingencies in bedtime, living room, undressing, hair-drying, and transportation settings. Based on these findings, context-specific environmental modifications and al

OBJECTIVE: A two-stage study aimed to estimate the prevalence of different types of self-injurious behaviors (suicidal ideation (SI), suicide attempts (SA), and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI)) in Russian patients with epilepsy (PWE), to identify factors associated with such behaviors, and to assess their impact on 3-year mortality.
METHODS: We enrolled 459 consecutive adult PWE from two level 2 outpatient epilepsy centers in Moscow. The study consisted of two phases - first, we assessed all demographic and clinical characteristics and patients' history of SI, SA, and NSSI. In the second phase

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents are at high risk of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Currently, there is no clinical assessment tool for adolescent NSSI behaviors measurement with global consistency. The Ottawa Self-injury Inventory (OSI) is considered as a relatively comprehensive assessment tool for NSSI, but the questionnaire is discussed with excessive content and timecostly, which may affect the reliability of the measurement results for adolescent. Thus, this study, based on OSI, aims to revise the assessment tool for adolescent with NSSI that is suitable for both clinically and scientifically, r

Prior research has examined the relations between various facets of emotion and psychopathology, with a great deal of recent work highlighting the importance of emotion regulation strategies. Much less attention has been given to the examination of emotion reactivity. This study reports on the development and evaluation of the Emotion Reactivity Scale (ERS), a 21-item self-report measure of emotion sensitivity, intensity, and persistence, among a sample of 87 adolescents and young adults. Factor analysis revealed a single factor of emotion reactivity best characterized the data. The ERS showed

INTRODUCTION: Non-suicidal self-injury disorder (NSSID) is a new diagnosis proposed in DSM-5 with a need of further study, especially in adolescent clinical populations where non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is particularly prevalent. We aimed to study characteristics of NSSID and estimate an optimal cutoff frequency level of NSSI behavior.
METHODS: Data were collected from 103 outpatient adolescents (ages 12-18) with recurrent self-harm behavior.
RESULTS: Adolescents with NSSID reported significantly more frequent NSSI behavior and suicide attempts than adolescents without NSSID. Frequency o

Self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) affect up to 50% of autistic individuals and significantly impact quality of life and everyday functioning. Cross-sectional studies link the presence of SIB to lower IQ, altered sensory responsivity, and poor emotion regulation, yet their effect on changes in SIB severity from early childhood to school age in autism remains poorly understood. We examined SIBs in 325 autistic children assessed at age 2-5 years (T1) and 161 autistic children at 4-9 years (T3). This included a subset of 122 autistic children evaluated longitudinally at both time points. SIBs were c

AIMS: Pain catastrophizing is characterized by a set of negative emotional and cognitive processes in response to pain, with a tendency to focus inordinately on the painful sensation, exaggerate the damage, and perceive feelings of helplessness. It is a psychological factor that can be treated to help people more effectively cope with pain. In this cross-sectional study, we explored the relationship between self-reported injuries, resilient behavior, and pain catastrophizing in dance students, with more than 3 years of study in public conservatories or private academies.

Strategies to link impulsivity and self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) show highly variable results, and may differ depending on the impulsivity measure used. To better understand this lack of consistency, we investigated correlations between self-report and behavioral impulsivity, inhibitory control, SIBs, and rumination. We included participants aged 13-17 years with either current or remitted psychopathology who have (n = 31) and who do not have (n = 14) a history of SIBs. Participants completed self-report measures of impulsivity, the Rumination Responsiveness Scale (RRS), and two behavioral m

Background: Individuals with spinal cord injury/disorder (SCI/D) must learn to adjust to and manage functional challenges after SCI/D onset. For these individuals, resilience (ie, the adaptive response to stressful events) may be related to their willingness and ability to conduct self-care behaviors. Objective: The study objectives were to examine the relationship between patient-reported perceptions of independence in performing self-care behaviors and resilience among Veterans with SCI/D and to examine variables (including resilience) associated with high self-care scores (controlling for c

Although it has been reported that 25% to 50% of patients with eating disorders engage in self-harming behaviors (SHBs), including nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behavior (SB), no study has investigated the psychological mechanisms underlying these SHBs or any differences that may exist between NSSI and SB. This study involved 76 female patients with eating disorders who were treated at the Kyoto University Hospital between July and August, 2010, who answered questionnaires about SHBs, eating attitudes, tendency to dissociate, and attachment style. Some of the participants (22.4%)

To find out more about the relationship between the presence of self-injurious behavior (SIB) and a history of traumatic experiences, we studied this link in 70 patients with an eating disorder (ED). The sample showed a high frequency of SIB (38.6%), particularly in patients with bulimia nervosa. We also found high percentages of self-reported experiences of physical (32.3%) and sexual abuse (47.7%). The presence of SIB turned out to be associated with a history of physical and/or sexual abuse. Patients who had suffered interpersonal abuse before the age of 15 were more likely to develop self-
