A new approach is adopted to grow cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) thin films using the close spaced sublimation (CSS) technique. The deposition parameters for the growth of cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin films onto the glass substrate were optimized. A zinc telluride (ZnTe) thin film layer was deposited onto already-deposited CdTe thin film to fabricate the CdZnTe (CZT) thin film sample as a ternary compound. Annealing was done after the successful deposition of CZT thin films before further characterization of the CZT thin film samples. The structures of the CZT thin film samples were studied

The development of methods to synthesize and physically manipulate extremely thin, single-crystalline inorganic semiconductor materials, so-called nanomembranes, has led to an almost explosive growth of research worldwide into uniquely enabled opportunities for their use in new "soft" and other unconventional form factors for high-performance electronics. The unique properties that nanomembranes afford, such as their flexibility and lightweight characteristics, allow them to be integrated into electronic and optoelectronic devices that, in turn, adopt these unique attributes. For example, nano

We have developed highly fluorescent, monolithic colloidal CdSe seeded CdS nanorod clusters comprising thousands of nanorods. Their use in the sandwich assay detection of a model protein yields a thousand-fold improvement in the detection limit compared to individual nanorods, making them suitable for the detection of low abundance molecular targets.

Successful formation of electronic interfaces between living cells and semiconductors hinges on being able to obtain an extremely close and high surface-area contact, which preserves both cell viability and semiconductor performance. To accomplish this, we introduce organic semiconductor assemblies consisting of a hierarchical arrangement of nanocrystals. These are synthesised via a colloidal chemical route that transforms the nontoxic commercial pigment quinacridone into various biomimetic three-dimensional arrangements of nanocrystals. Through a tuning of parameters such as precursor concent

Phosphorus is a much used dopant in semiconductor technology. Its vapors represent a rather stable tetratomic molecular compound and are produced from one of the most thermodynamically stable allotropic forms of phosphorus-red phosphorus. At vacuum heating temperatures ranging from 325 °C, red phosphorus evaporates solely as P4 molecules (P4/P2 ∼ 2 × 10(5), P4/P ∼ 10(21)). It is for this reason that red phosphorus is best suited as a source of polyatomic molecular ion beams. The paper reports on experimental research in the generation of polyatomic phosphorus ion beams with an alternative P va

CdSe nanoparticles with polystyrene (PS) brushes are obtained by "grafting through" technique starting from solely aqueously synthesized nanoparticles. Mercaptoethanol (ME) capped nanoparticles are used to achieve double bond functional groups on the surface by condensation reaction with methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS). PS polymerization starts from these double bonds. Spectroscopic, diffraction and thermal techniques are used to characterize the nanoparticles. Infrared spectroscopy shows the formation of robust bonding between CdSe nanoparticles and the organic ligand, as well as the

The collective properties of nanoparticles manifest in their ability to self-organize into complex microscale structures. Slow oxidation of tellurium ions in cadmium telluride (CdTe) nanoparticles results in the assembly of 1- to 4-micrometer-long flat ribbons made of several layers of individual cadmium sulfide (CdS)/CdTe nanocrystals. Twisting of the ribbons with an equal distribution of left and right helices was induced by illumination with visible light. The pitch lengths (250 to 1500 nanometers) varied with illumination dose, and the twisting was associated with the relief of mechanical

Semiconductor nanocrystals emerge as fluorescent bioprobes for long-term imaging and multiplexed assays; however, there is a challenge of making nanocrystals biocompatible without nonspecific bindings to background molecules. Here, we report the bioconjugation of small-sized, hydroxylated nanocrystals, enabling highly sensitive detection of various biomolecules with little or no nonspecific binding. Zinc-blende CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals were passivated with 3-mercapto-1-propanol (MPO) and activated to amine-reactive succinimidyl carbonate derivatives and then covalently linked to amine-functionali

In this study, we investigated the size and photoluminescence (PL) evolution of CdTe nanoparticles (NPs) in different polymer media under thermal annealing. A quick growth and maintenance of strong PL were observed. By analyzing the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of NPs in polymer media, we discovered that the size evolution of NPs was the combination of Ostwald ripening and dynamic coalescence throughout the growth process. Moreover, the experimental results also revealed that the nature of polymers determined the dynamic coalescence of NPs from three aspects; the mobility of p

We report a novel method for cap exchange of emissive semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) using thiol functional ligands metalated with zinc. Utilizing this method, the NCs can be several times brighter and much more resistant to precipitation compared to control samples. This method has been applied using a variety of caps such as dihydrolipoic acid and cysteine. Our data suggest that the improved properties of the metalated cap exchanged NCs are due to a ligand metathesis process occurring at the NC surface where the zinc complex reacts with NC surface bound ligands, gently removing them and re

We present and discuss results and features related to the synthesis of water-soluble semiconductor quantum dots and their application as fluorescent biomarkers in cancer diagnostics. We have prepared and applied different core-shell quantum dots, such as cadmium telluride-cadmium sulfide, CdTe-CdS, and cadmium sulfide-cadmium hydroxide, CdS/Cd(OH)(2), in living healthy and neoplastic cells and tissues samples. The CdS/Cd(OH)(2) quantum dots presented the best results, maintaining high levels of luminescence as well as high photostability in cells and tissues. Labeled tissues and cells were an

The progression from quasi zero-dimensional (Q0D) nanoclusters to quasi one-dimensional (Q1D) nanorods, and, with increasing length, to nanowires, represents the most conceptually fundamental transition from the nanoscale to bulk-like length scales. This dimensionality crossover is particularly interesting, both scientifically and technologically, for inorganic semiconducting (ISC) materials, where striking concomitant changes in optoelectronic properties occur.(1,2) Such effects are most pronounced for ultra-thin(3) ISC nanorods/nanowires, where the confining and defective nature of the atomi

The objective of this study was to investigate on the effect of mixing intensity (G) and mixing duration (t(d)) on struvite precipitation in the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) wastewater generated from the semiconductor manufacturing process. Batch-scale experiments revealed that struvite crystallization was affected by both G and t(d). The mixing effect was to enhance the mass transfer of solute to the crystals in the process, resulting in the improvement of struvite crystallization and growth. By forming struvite, removal efficiencies of N and P increased logarithmic with the multiple v

We have grown CdSe semiconductor films on glass substrates and the films were coated with Au nanoparticles of 10 nm in size by the pulsed-laser deposition technique. The films demonstrate a large enhancement of Raman intensity and photoluminescence of CdSe semiconductor via excitation of surface plasmon resonances in proximate gold metal nanoparticles deposited on the surface of CdSe film. These observations suggest a variety of approaches for improving the performance of devices such as photodetectors, photovoltaics, and related devices, including biosensors.

'Caged' compounds are biological molecules that are rendered inactive by a protecting (cage) group. Photocleaving of chemical bonds associated with the cage species with intense UV light results in the release of the active molecules. This technique, called flash photolysis, allows for real-time study of interacting biological molecules and typically involves the use of high intensity lasers or flash lamps to deliver the UV pulse to the biological specimen [Callaway EM, Katz LC. Photostimulation using caged glutamate reveals functional circuitry in living brain slices. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1

The feasibility of the dissolved air flotation (DAF) process in treating chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) wastewater was evaluated in this study. Wastewater from a local semiconductor manufacturer was sampled and characterised. Nano-sized silica (77.6 nm) with turbidity of 130 +/- 3 NTU was found in the slightly alkaline wastewater with traces of other pollutants. Experimental results indicated removal efficiency of particles, measured as suspended particle or turbidity, increased with increasing concentration of cationic collector cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). When CTAB concentra

First principles calculations are used to predict the stability and electronic structures of SnS(2) nanotubes. Optimization of several structures and their corresponding strain energies confirm the stability of SnS(2) nanotube structures. Band structure calculations show that SnS(2) nanotubes could have moderate band gaps regardless of their chirality. It suggests that SnS(2) nanotubes would be well-suited to use as semiconductor wires in nanoelectronic devices if they are synthesized. Adsorption of NH(3) onto SnS(2) is also investigated and discussed with regard to potential sensor applicatio

van der Waals layered MX (M = Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) ferroelectric semiconductors present structural anisotropy that is responsible for the intriguing valley physics yet makes it challenging to determine direction-dependent optical-edge parameters in a rigorous and consistent manner. Here, we systematically explore the in-plane optical anisotropy in MX by polarized transmission spectroscopy combined with spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. We demonstrate that the two orthorhombic armchair (AC) and zigzag (ZZ) optical edges are highly linearly polarized, with m
